    Sifnos is our go to Greek island. Consider renting a scooter to get around the island on your own timetable to explore. Two people on one scooter is no problem. We have been visiting here for 15+ years. The secret is getting out.

      Yes, we love it too and I'm sure it won't be undiscovered much longer. I just hope the island can resist the temptation to exploit itself for tourism and says no to big fancy hotels. It's best off as a traditional island.

    Just was asking a few Greeks I know about if Santorini is still worth going to because it’s become so touristy. They said to go and just manage expectations. Your video shows so much of Santorini that’s not been over run and confirms that it’s still very much worth the visit. Thank you again for your wonderful attention to detail. Also that you provide so many little details about getting around and places to go explore that books don’t bother with. I could go on about all the aspects of your videos that we love…

      Thanks, I'm glad you found it helpful. You're right that it's not so bad outside of Fira and Oia. Most of the problem I think stems from cruise passengers who have to arrive in Fira and due to limited time tend to want to see Fira and Oia so those get most crowded. The beach resorts and inland villages aren't world's apart from a lot of other Greek islands and their prices aren't unreasonable either. If you can go outside peak season and/or limit your time in Fira and Oia then I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time.

    I love Santorini.. Its my go island but in the off season.. Over the years due to its popularity the island has become a tourist trap in my opinion. The charm, The Flare it just doesn't seem to be there.. Besides that this is a gorgeous peice of rock with breathtaking views.

      @GreeceTravelGuide 10 днів тому

      Yes, I wish we could have visited 20 years ago, I'm sure it was a lot different then. I've enjoyed all my trips but I do much prefer the quieter and more traditional islands that have retained their Greek charm and hospitality. The views are stunning though and definitely worth seeing, if only once, in a lifetime.

      I visited Karpathos in 2021 and did really enjoy it. Wasn't sure what to expect as I used it as a stepping-stone to get from Crete to Rhodes on the ferry, but it's a lovely island. Spent five nights there and loved exploring it and enjoying the beaches. Need to go again really but so many new islands to see!

    Thanks for the great intro to Paros! Have been to 4 other islands over the years and Patmos twice which I love, but I'd like to find one that is closer to the mainland for travel convenience. Paros ticks several of the boxes I'm looking for --- especially that you hiked across the island in one day!!! And a good number of beaches that are not too rocky. I'll be going in late Sept/Oct hoping to avoid the crowds and find less expensive accomodations. Can you recommend any?? Thanks for the great 2 videos on Paros -- good info, less blah blah, look at me --- which too many UA-cam videos seem to focus on!!! Efaristo poli!!

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 13 днів тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Paros is lovely and should be relatively quiet late September. I've only stayed in the port town of Parikia but found it a very convenient base. Hotel Oasis is lovely and right by the port but doesn't have a pool if that's something you care about. It didn't bother me as there's a good beach in Parikia to the north. The bus station is also nearby where you can get to most resorts on the island for just a couple of euro.

  • @jo-annh.olmstead4168
    @jo-annh.olmstead4168 13 днів тому

    Thanks for the great intro to Sifnos. I have 3 weeks in Sept/Oct and am looking around for an island for pleasant solo hiking, daily swimming (no loungers necessary, thanks), opportunity to meet locals, minimum tourists, good food and a place to stay by a port or fishing village. I'll be using public transport or walking. This is my 3rd visit to Greece -- been to Chios, Samos, Patmos (twice) and Ikaria. I'd like to find a new "love" that is closer to the mainland for convenience from the airport. I'm also looking pretty seriously at Paros. Thoughts?? I like your videos -- more content, less blah blah.....

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 13 днів тому

      Paros is picturesque, but it's nothing compared to Sifnos in my opinion. You'll find Paros quite a bit busier as it's more well-known, whereas Sifnos isn't as popular yet. I'm sure you'll love Sifnos.

    I have stayed in Agios prokopios and loved the beach, going soon and im thinking to stay near Giorgious. But hearing beach isnt as great. Is it a big difference? Will i be dissaopinted going there now that im used to the beach in prokopios?

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 20 днів тому

      It's a few years since I last visited Naxos, but I always found Agios Georgios Beach really nice. It's a sandy beach, with shallow water. I've only visited Prokopios once and it seemed nice so I think they're quite comparable. My favourite beaches are at Agia Anna and further south all along the coastline from Maragas to Plaka. I hear the northern end is quite developed now with lots of sunbeds and beach bars, but if you prefer it quieter, head further south towards Plaka and the crowds should lessen.

    I’ve just booked flights 10days apart end of September. I was planning to include Mykonos then Santorini. Any other you would recommend?

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 26 днів тому

      Which airport(s) are you flying to/from? Mykonos and Santorini are the most popular Greek islands and will still be busy even in late September. Personally, I would avoid Mykonos unless you want its party scene. Santorini is worth seeing for a night or two before moving on. A good itinerary would be: 1. Start on Santorini (if you're flying into Athens, look at a connecting internal flight or same-day ferry if possible). 2. Head north to Ios (it has a reputation for nightlife, but late September will be fairly quiet and is a lovely island with great contrast to Santorini). 3. Head north again to either Paros or Naxos: Naxos is larger with more sightseeing opportunities; Paros is a little prettier and more 'Instagrammable', with lots of nice beaches and good food. Then fly back to Athens. I'd spend 3 nights on Santorini and Ios, and 4 nights on Naxos/Paros.

    I spent 3 days there in 1989 ,the first time I visited Greece. we stayed in Kamares and I remember we were picked up at the port by a lady who was offering accommodation. we had a room with outside bathroom and we would go for breakfast to a bar on the beach nearby where the song that represented Greece in Eurovision that year was played every morning . it was the only bar on the beach at that time I also remember going to Platis Gialos beach where I had stuffed tomatoes for lunch for the first time It was early September and there were nearly any tourists on the island. Greece was so much different back then

      Sifnos must have been incredible back then. I know it's hardly unspoiled these days but compared to the likes of Paros it still feels quite traditional. I don't think that will last too much longer, though.

    Have you tried the Eurail Greek island pass? It is not so easy to get information on it, even from the company that sell it.

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 2 місяці тому

      I've heard of it but can't say I've used it myself. I agree the website is a bit lacking in detail, let me see if I can find more information for you.

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 2 місяці тому

      I did some more digging and the main issue is that only two Greek ferry operators support the pass: Blue Star Ferries and Hellenic Seaways. While Blue Star does cover quite a few islands, they're slower vehicle ferries. Seajets, one of the biggest operators of high-speed ferries, isn't part of the scheme. It could still be worth getting the pass but I would definitely research whether you can get to the islands you want to see via Blue Star or Hellenic and whether the pass will save you much over the normal ticket prices before buying it.

    • @missj.4760
      @missj.4760 2 місяці тому

      @@GreeceTravelGuide Yes, it is only for Attica group ferries and it is only slow ferries. It is more interesting for trips to island far from Athens (Rhodes, Crete, etc.)

  • @andreimihaesi
    @andreimihaesi 2 місяці тому

    Wow it seems so remote and intriguing. I'd like to combine it with Amorgos if possible. Is this the most barren/arid island you've seen? It's surprising as Kos and Samos aren't far away but are so much greener! Must be the wind..

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 2 місяці тому

      You can definitely combine it with Amorgos-I took a ferry from Paros and it stopped at Amorgos on the way. I wouldn't say it's the most barren, Ios and Sikinos are similarly without much vegetation. It's a pretty cool island to visit though.

  • @andreimihaesi
    @andreimihaesi 2 місяці тому

    It's a shame Serifos didn't impress.. how is the beach of Livadi? It seems to have great views up to Chora and lots of restaurants/bars. Is it comparable to Kamares or Adamas?

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 2 місяці тому

      I wouldn't discount Serifos. When I visited it was very quiet due to on-going Covid restrictions and I think this had quite a big impact on my first impressions. I also just found it slightly less appealing than Sifnos, which isn't to say it's a bad place but Sifnos is my current favourite Greek island so it was tough competition! I've read other opinions online which suggest Serifos is quite popular so I think it just didn't connect for me. Livadi beach looks nice, but I didn't really spend much time on it as my hotel was closer to Livadakia beach so that's where I went. Looking at photos online, it does look really nice though and possibly comparable to Kamares but I couldn't say for sure - perhaps you can let me know if you see it, I think I need to revisit Serifos and give it another try.

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 2 місяці тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I use three different cameras for most of my footage: a GoPro Hero 10, which is the cheapest and most compact 4k action camera that I own; a Panasonic Lumix GH5, which is a 4k DSLR camera and has superb quality but is less portable; and a DJI Mavic Air drone for the aerial shots. A decent mobile phone these days will record reasonable quality 4k video, so I'm not sure you need a dedicated camera unless you're specifically interested in photography/videography. Something like the GoPro Hero 10 is a good starter for video as it has built-in stabilization so produces smooth footage when walking around and the quality is very good. A DSLR or compact fixed-lens camera is the next step up and gives better quality video but is more equipment to buy and carry around.

    Thanks for the lovely, helpful video! What are your thoughts on visiting in early April? Will restaraunts be open? And bus routes will still be active, even if not as many numbers as the high season?

    • @GreeceTravelGuide
      @GreeceTravelGuide 3 місяці тому

      Glad you enjoyed the video. I've never visited Greece as early as April before. My understanding is that, particularly on Greek Islands, the tourist season does not really get going until after Easter (Greek Orthodox Easter) which, in 2024, is Sunday 5th May. Travelling before this date will probably mean that accommodation is very limited and many restaurants will still be closed. That said, all islands have year-round local populations so there will be a functioning bus service and no doubt some places will be open. Personally, if you can delay you trip by a month and go in early May instead, I would recommend it - the weather will be warmer and there will definitely be more tourist facilities available. Alternatively, you could visit the mainland or a larger island such as Crete, where there is a larger local population.

    We have 9 days to do the Saronic islands this summer. We are a couple with a 4 year old son. Where would you recommend? Ideally we would just do 1 or 2 islands so not to have too much travel. Have a car so not going to do Hydra but interested to know which of the others are best. Thanks

      Hi James, unfortunately I've only visited Aegina and Agistri, so it's hard to offer meaningful advice on the other islands with no personal experience. I would certainly include Aegina as it has an interesting mix of history and culture, and is big enough for a 3 or 4 night stay. Agistri is pretty, but quite small and fairly quiet. I would be tempted to skip it and try one of the others, but I would recommend doing some research to see which one sounds the most appealing. Enjoy your trip! :)

    A very usefull video but as an experienced (+30 years) islandhopper I have a few remarks: - Samos, Ikaria, Fourni, Chios, Lesvos, Lemnos and Samothraki are known as the North-Aegean islands. - If you buy your ferry ticket in a ticket office on the islands you never have to pay a fee for printing. That fee is only to print online prebooked tickets. - Some ferry companies do offer early booking discounts. - The remark on popular accommodation booking sites that there are no rooms available anymore doesn't mean it's like that in reality. Most owners don't put all their rooms on the booking sites. So, contacting an accommodation directly is often worth it. And most of the times you will get a better offer. - And 1 more tip: Book directly with the ferry company. It will save time and trouble when your ferry is cancelled and you have booked it through a 3rd party. And some 3rd party brokers ask extra fees to deliver your tickets or even add an extra provision upon the ticket price. My trips this year are Naxos-Sikinos-Naxos (6,5 weeks in Spring) and Kalymnos-Lipsi-Astypalea-Kos (7 weeks in September/October).

      Thanks for watching and for your helpful feedback. You're right, I could have been clearer that the printing fee was only for pre-booked tickets. I wasn't aware of discounts on early ferry bookings, but I'll be sure to look out for them when planning future trips. Good point about the accommodation too, I often book direct for better access to the full inventory and prices, and should have included this in the video (it's hard to think of everything at the time). Your trips sound incredible - have you been to Sikinos before? I visited in 2021 during the summer and really enjoyed it. A very quiet island compared to other Cycladic destinations, but really nice to get that contrast. Naxos used to be my favourite island and I do plan to return, but in peak season it seems to have become a victim of its own success. Should be superb in Spring though as it's a very green island. I've only visited Kalymnos on a day-trip from Kos, but it seemed nice. Astypalea I really enjoyed. I understand it's quite popular with Greeks, but still seemed relatively quiet compared to the more well-known destinations. Kos I spent three weeks on back in summer 2021 - got 'stuck' there when I couldn't get any accommodation on Amorgos to transit from the Dodecanese to the Cyclades, but I grew to really like the place. Hope you have a great time.
