    Great video. We are establishing a vineyard of Sangiovese here in central Victoria, Australia. Why do you keep the arms short and extend in the next season? Why not just prune to the length you want? We are only looking a 1.5 metre vine spacing, so maybe you have greater spacing and this means a wider cordon?

    Its better to undersize the hole and not use slurry with capacitance sensors as they are very sensitive to soil texture as well.. We use pycno sensors and we got skewed results with slurry vs. no slurry..

    • @a-meteo7778

      Try Sentek no slurry probes. Sentek Drill & Drop measures an undisturbed soil medium, not a soil slurry that fills the air gap between soil and probe, which is being used by most soil moisture probe manufacturers. The slurry can create preferential path flow in addition to altering the water holding capacity of water along the probe, providing misleading and potentially crop damaging information to the irrigator . Drill & Drop measures the true accurate soil profile and provides immediate and high quality data for advanced management decisions. Fantastic.

    I'm a home grower (rookie) who has 30 merlot vines doing well (planted in march)--after my first prune this dormant season back to below the fruiting wire, do I just let four canes grow and then choose the best two the next dormant season for the cordons (the third leaf?)? What do I do if they fruit in the second season--do I cut them out?

  • @TM-eo8eb
    @TM-eo8eb 6 років тому

    was the other cordon second year growth as well?

    Is it possible to make the top of the trunk split into two? To make it a bilateral.

      Hi Julian. Pardon the delayed reply. Yes it is possible to make a shoot split into two in the current growing season. It is often referred to as topping and it is appropriate for some situations. For example, if you are growing a trunk from a 2 or 3 year old vine that was cut back to 2 buds in the winter, you can grow a strong shoot up past the fruiting wire, then trim the shoot at the fruiting wire by mid season sometime. I prefer not to trim it until the thickness of the shoot at the fruiting wire is at least pencil size. After doing this, the lateral shoots just below the fruiting wire will be stimulated to grow and can be used to create cordons. I do not suggest doing this late in the season, as there may not be time to get the growth needed to form good cordons. I have some good videos and instructions available at: VirtualViticultureAcademy.com Cheers, -Fritz

    Is it possible to force the grapevine to a split trunk? My grapevine is growing upwards with a single trunk, but I put it in the middle of two posts so it goes in a T position like yours. Can I split it in half, or what can I do?

    • @julianruiz4793
      @julianruiz4793 6 років тому

      It still has a green stem on the top, so I wanna know if there's a way to split that into bilateral.
