Ben Ponniah is a choral composer who was born in 1984. He studied at Ipswich School where he was a music scholar. The piano, voice and French horn were his instruments of choice and he started composing during his GCSEs. His main choral training took place at St Mary Le Tower Church under John Cooper and Dr Michael Nicholas. During his time at The University of Nottingham he sang in the selective Viva Voce chamber choir. He started composing more frequently at the age of 22 during his gap year, having not composed since his school days.
After experimenting with several styles, he believes he has settled on a sound world. His musical influences include Francis Poulenc, Olivier Messiaen, Alexander Scriabin and John Coltrane. His natural influences include the sun, moon and stars. I hope you enjoy the clips on this website.

Golden Carol
Golden Carol was written for Tim Reader and The Epiphoni Consort on their 10th anniversary in 2024.
We saw the light shine out afar,
On Christmas in the morning,
And straight we knew Christ's Star it was,
Bright beaming in the morning.
Then did we fall on bended knee,
on Christmas in the morning,
And prais’d the Lord, who'd let us see
His glory at its dawning.
Oh! Every thought be of His name,
On Christmas in the morning,
Who bore for us both grief and shame,
Affliction's sharpest scorning.
And may we die, when death shall come,
On Christmas in the morning,
And see in Heav'n, our glorious home,
The Star of Christmas morning.
We saw the light shine out afar,
On Christmas in the morning,
And straight we knew Christ's Star it was,
Bright beaming in the morning.
Then did we fall on bended knee,
on Christmas in the morning,
And prais’d the Lord, who'd let us see
His glory at its dawning.
Oh! Every thought be of His name,
On Christmas in the morning,
Who bore for us both grief and shame,
Affliction's sharpest scorning.
And may we die, when death shall come,
On Christmas in the morning,
And see in Heav'n, our glorious home,
The Star of Christmas morning.

Light of Lights!

This piece was commissioned by Rupert Gough for The Choir of Royal Holloway. It is suitable for Advent, Christmas, Epiphany and Easter. The text is by Thomas Aquinas: Light of lights! All gloom dispelling, Thou didst come to make thy dwelling Here within our world of sight. Lord, in pity and in power, Thou didst in our darkest hour Rend the clouds and show thy light.

@@boxeriain Thank you for watching 😊
You should actually play the whole song
No, it really isn't! It's the worst time of the year.

How so?
Wow! Nice work!
Thank you so much! :)

Beautiful. But what is it? Lyrics? Who sings? And you composed it, of course.
Thank you! Yes I composed the music (lots of excerpts from various pieces of mine): O magnum mysterium; O sacrum convivium; Bring us, O Lord God; O Lord, the maker of all thing; God be in my head and Requiem in Blue.
Congrats as you 'begin' Ben... enjoyed listening and may God bless you on your musical journey
Amazing dear Ben. Congrats ❤❤
Thank you!
Lovely ... especially loved the harmonies of the last few bars
Thank you so much William! I have enjoyed watching some of your videos this morning. I wrote some piano pieces entitled "Improvisations on Loss" that are inspired by Francis Poulenc and Michel Legrand, particularly number 4. If you are interested, they can be found here: benponniah.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/Improvisations-on-Loss-sample.pdf.
@@b9times Dear Ben, getting the regular email from Boosey just now - featuring your choral pieces - reminded me I hadn't replied to your post. My apologies (Covid intervened...). Thank you for watching my videos. I found your piano pieces quite poignant (my favourite part was the lacrimosa section near the end of the last piece). What doesn't defeat us makes us better composers! I also enjoy writing choral music and will have some recordings to post in the near future. Best wishes for your PhD
Wow, Ben--this is lovely.
Thank you Wes!
Thank you for pointing me to this, it's delightful! (Although I've never heard the BBCS sound so American...)
I was really pleased with how they emphasised the spiciest notes!
I like the enharmonic shifts, otherwise I think you've been a bit restrained with the harmony!
Thank you for your feedback - one of my main goals here was accessibility. Here's a piece with more complex harmony: ua-cam.com/video/3YWfE2EjY3s/v-deo.html
Would you be willing to share your score for this?
Прикольненько!
Wow.
One of the most beautiful pieces of choral music I know of.
Thank you so much, Albert.
Very tastefully done tribute and rendered nicely - thanks!
Very nice Ben
