I agree, but when all you have to do is type in Fellini black umbrella in Google, come on. How lazy are audiences? Accessibility is a two way street. Designers and audience meet in the middle sometimes, especially with a complex or esoteric subject. You must admit, drum corps audiences are some of the most idiotic audiences in all the performing arts. Many audience members can barely identify a theme in a show, and are just waiting for the loud parts, or the drum break. Musicians in general are at the outside of the curve when it comes to meaning underneath the music. Sometimes I feel like you can't blame audiences for not caring about the finer aspects of visual design because they've been screwed too often with a show that doesn't make sense. Look at Crowns 2024 Promethean-- what an indecipherable, confusing, sidetracking mess that visual program was. It was like watching the plot to The Brothers Karamazov.

Felliniesque had something for everyone-- dancing girls for the dumb horny guys, a three ring circus for families, and a limping suicidal clown for the philosophers.That's the Flintstones-esque genius of layered meaning.

BK 2014, where they took dialogue from a character who is a child molester from American Beauty? BK's designers didn't even research the movie. They took the sarcastically positive monologue and turned it into a Hallmark card. Inexcusable, and one of the worst show concepts in the history of the activity. Beautifully played, and sincerely performed by BK, definitely. But a concept horror show deserving of top ten worst lists. And just to bury you on this, did you know that the monologue that BK used was, that year, one of the first things that popped up in Google when you typed in "motivational speeches"? That means that BK's designers chose it from google, and didn't even research its meaning or context. If that's not seat of the pants design, nothing is.

@@MrTallformyheight Thank you. Makes sense. So the scene with Atlas falling paralleled the organization’s struggle. I want to watch it again to see this scene. So the show was about the organization itself and its overcoming recent adversities. As with any show without language, it’s difficult to convey specific meaning that’s accessible to the audience. By the end, the ensemble lifts itself up in the final pose.

Makes you wonder. The objective of this work of mine is to educate students about production design and production development found in music videos, musicals, full length feature films, commercials, television series, and even Cirque du Soleil. Drum Corps marchers must become aware of professional standards of design and development so that they can compete in the professional world. Most musicians don't just sit down and play like they do in a symphony. In the professional world, music has a context and supports the thematic meaning in that context.

Hey, at least now you won’t create a show about the music of the acerbic grunge rock band Nirvana using Buddhist imagery, because you’ll research that the band name was a joke. Cobain was shitting in Buddhists’ mouths when he named the band "Nirvana". (Cohesion) Hey, at least now you won’t do a Blue Stars show about a hallucinogenic drink called absinthe without any immediacy, stakes, depth or substance. (Universality) Hey, at least you won’t do a Cavaliers anniversary show where you spend $30,000 on feather props with angling handles that turn them into phalluses for no thematic reason other than a dick joke. (Authenticity.) Hey at least now you won’t create a Colts show about “home addresses” in Home is Where the Heart Is with absolutely no arc of action, and no transformation on the ending or meaning of any kind. (Endings.) And hey, at least now you won’t select a 1970s Pop tune Both Sides Now To capture the end of life struggle of Matisse who died in the 50s. Or sprinkle Matisse’s life with circus juggling tricks for no reason. (Cohesion.) Hey, at least now you won’t do a cadets show which confuses Greek god of strength Atlas with Charles Atlas, the fitness guru who wore workout gear. (Authenticity.)

Then, the first piece of information the audience gets in the show is an avalanche of home addresses, presumably previously recorded by the cast members themselves. That breaks the fourth wall, and lets the audience know that the show is about the performers, specifically, not a narrative premise with a literary or historical reference. But why the costumes, then? Why the telephone poles from a bygone era? That's incongruent. Then, we get a very strange unison yelling of an address in an emphatic tone, with mostly male voices. We presume it's a corps home base address, but the tone of the shouting of the address is aggressive, militant, emphatic and just odd. Why that tone? And that's just the first minute. This show was not storyboarded. It was thrown together in a few weeks and it makes no sense. The dour tone of the recorded addresses makes it sound like a list of home town murder locations. Each address delivered sadly, without warmth, and without any emotion or additional text to tell the audience what the point is. This is awful, and would never pass muster in a professional production. Yet, these designers are paid professionals in a million dollar production. Next, the show doesn't progress the theme of "home" and what it means in a current context. There's some action on the field to support the premise of a home-town feel maybe, and front steps, our courthouse steps, but no context that helps support any higher purpose or point of view about home and its purpose or value. Maybe how we've lost a sense of "home" in our busy lives, or traveling with this corps makes us miss the joys of home? But how is that shown or supported in the rest of the show? Then the last set piece is a unison shouting of the address of the stadium for finals, where they are now. Is that their new home? Is home here now, because that's where you are? What about the telephone poles? The premise is incomplete, vague and completely without justification, without clarity, and with just a hint of a theme around "home." Drum corps is not an abstract sandbox for inexperienced production designers to play in. These are million dollar productions that require storyboarding, planning, and a selected subject and theme, even if there's no story, and even if it's abstract or subconsciously derived. This production is a collection of random unexplained elements that don't tie together, and don't coalesce into a meaningful ending. One of the purposes of professional productions, which is what members should be taught in this activity, is that a professional production must be cohesive, authentic, universal and unique, and must have a carefully engineered script, including a subject and theme and high stakes action of some kind, however subtle (even if there's no intended "story") in order to move the audience. This show should have had an arc of action that supported the theme of "home is where the heart is". Without it, the show just sits there, and we wonder what the performers are trying to tell us. This show did not meet professional standards. Music video standards. Opera standards. Theater Standards. Film Standards. Cirque standards. Disney on Ice standards. Museum exhibition standards. Drum corps marchers are being taught that vague, unexplainable premises are okay. But that's a false notion. Music degree programs rarely require students to place their compositions in a visual context, but that's what's required in the professional world. Drum corps is the chance for these lovers of music and performance to get practice is knowing what they're performing, and demanding that the premise make sense, own the action inside the show, and insure that a thematic argument is present inside the production, fully scripted for audience impact, even if there's no "story" intended.

Marching members can soon design their own shows! Marching members will be required to learn and understand basic design principles, and will soon be a part of the design process.

Wake up. Ask The Blue Knights who couldn't decide what their subject and theme were in 2023. Ask the Colts who made a vague statement about their "home addresses" and old fashioned land lines, but didn't make a specific point about "home". Ask Phantom who chose a subject of an alien visitation that started life on planet Earth. But what was Phantom's theme? What was their observation about life as we know it or imagine it? What was the underlying message? They don't know! Ask the members! Ask the design staff! Amateur hour? Fuck that.
