A couple of weeks ago I was standing beside that piano at the Hollywood Cafe... being on my Bluestrail from Memphis, Helena, Tutwiler, Clarksdale down to Nola... and it brought some tears in my eyes... being so close to the "fountain"....

I stumbled across this - this morning and thought they can’t make anything better than the original.. I guess you put a saxophone playing like Jr Walker and then Paul Carrack with his soulful voice, well you done got yourself a hit .. I played it three times and shared it with several people. I think the Young Rascals would be proud of this version.. But when I first heard it about 1967 on the radio it something that stays with you all your life .. Now try to sing it that’s another thing . If you don’t hit that intro just right you might as well trash it. And the hook ‘Grooving on a Sunday afternoon and that falsetto in the middle of the song .. Can’t do it Go ahead and sat down cause people who grew up with that song know what it supposed to sound like right? Yes back then dirt roads, hot summers, no air conditioner but window fans and swamp coolers. And those ice trays stayed empty from frequent Kool aid breaks.. and fizzies.. Ya’ll don’t hear me? I walked off the plane in Memphis in the pouring rain in 1972 after flying through a thunderstorm from Chicago. This was the first time away from home other than boot camp so the first place I lived other than home in Portland. I spent 6 months there for school and loved Memphis and so many of the people I knew there. So I will never find this song old because it reminds me of a very special place and time.
