NATURAL POTTY TRAINING FROM AS EARLY AS BIRTH
Hi, I'm Heather! I empower regular parents just like you to STOP changing poopy diapers and empower their child's early toilet independence by naturally potty training their babies from as early as birth. I did it with my second baby, and she was pooping in the potty at 5 weeks old and taking HERSELF by 12 months!
Conventional toilet "readiness qualifications" are a myth -- and I'll show you why. When you learn how to use Elimination Communication with your baby, you can fast track to full diaper freedom WITHOUT the stress of conventional potty training, and I'll show you exactly how to do it.
This is not a game for stay-at-home-moms of a single child -- I'm a full time professional architect, owner of multiple businesses, and mother of two. We made this work with two parents working full time AND a 2 year old toddler potty training AT THE SAME TIME! If we can do it, so can you!

This week I'm answering ANOTHER one of the most common questions I get from my audience! I hear almost daily from someone that they've been practicing EC with their baby for months, or even since birth, and all of a sudden their baby refuses to sit on the potty, is peeing in their diaper minutes after the offer, or straight up pooping on the floor! I wish I knew THIS ONE THING when our first baby was born!
having my 2nd baby next month. I'm intrigued to try this! But what do you do whenever you're out of the house?!
We are beginning our EC journey and I am struggling support her lower body ? Or maybe wondering if I am letting her sit in the potty instead of supporting her lower body. Head support is fine but I worry about her low back resting on the potty. Is this an issue? Also I am having a hard time hearing her pee in the potty? Also a bit harder to catch poop signals since she only goes once a day. If I understand correctly, when I hear her poop I can then make the corresponding sound? But how do I create the sound for pee if I’m not hearing/noticing her pee? Maybe I need to be more attentive to her time on the potty to see if I can notice. She is only 4 weeks old by the way so still early. Thank you! I love your content.
Hi there! Congratulations on starting this journey with your baby! If your baby is still quite small it may be more comfortable to hold her in-arms in a cradle hold over the sink. If you're using a top hat potty the base should be supporting her legs, if she's falling down in it you might want to try the cradle hold until she's a bit bigger. That will also help you see when she goes and make the cue sound at the right time to associate. Good luck!
My baby is 8 weeks old, would love to start. The potty you show here is however not available in Mexico (i could order it from the US but that would make it $50 😅). Any alternatives?
50:00 La mejor parte
I would not want my kid peeing or pooping in my sink
The toilet is also a very easy option 👍 fyi though, breast milk poop from exclusively breastfed babies IS water soluble/liquid and very easy to wash out with hot water and a little soap
Also super easy to do anywhere is for parent/caregiver to sit reverse on the toilet and do the same hold as you did over the sink. Also then there’s no need to empty a potty. Obviously if it’s urgent the potty might be a better option but ya, i use that option anytime we are out in public or even at home if i know i have time
Thank you so much for this helpful information! I'm currently a full-time software engineer, and I think I'll be interested in exploring this option when my family grows. I have a couple of questions: How long did the process take from applying for an au pair to having one start working with you? Do they need to live in your home, or could they stay in a nearby rented studio? Also, do you need to find a new au pair each year? If so, how did your kids adjust to the changes in their caregiver? Thanks again!
So glad you found it helpful! I think I'll make another video explaining all the practical details, I've already gotten a lot of questions about it! They recommend allowing about two months between matching with your au pair and having them start, this allows time for the agency to secure the visa and flights. They do have to have a room in your home/on your property, unfortunately I don't think you would be able to put them up in a rented space elsewhere because it's regulated as a "cultural exchange" by the US government. They're like an exchange student living in your home, who also cares for your children. They also do have the option to renew for a second year with you, which is what we did! Our au pair goes home in December, so I'll know more about the kids reaction after that! Our daughter has known her her entire life, almost two years, and they are very close. It is going to be hardest for her I think.
Thanks so much for sharing. I had a similar experience with separation in pregnancy, emergency c section and traumatic birth + NICU stay (even in the same hospital was rough enough especially since I planned a birth center birth). Glad both our babies are ok! I’ve been thinking of getting an Au pair eventually bc I do have a spare bedroom but only 1 kid so not sure. Getting by with minimal child care as long as I can 😊
Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry that happened to you too, it was not at all how I hoped the birth would go (I was planning a vbac with midwives) and was instead incredibly traumatic. I'm very glad to hear that your baby is ok now! What happened to your separated partner? Did he attend the birth? There are definitely a lot of expenses associated with an au pair, I think the math only makes sense if you have more than one child and need full time hours (they can work up to 45 hours a week). But, as I explained in the video, the benefits have been very real and worth it and I'm so glad we made the investment ❤️
My daughter doesn’t seem to have any signs for pee. I put her on the potty when she first woke up and was reading a book to her and didn’t know she’d gone until I took her off. Maybe I need to spend some time really laser eyeballing her to see if I’m missing some really subtle cues. 🤷🏻♀️
The signs will be more noticeable BEFORE you put them on the potty! Once they're on it, that's the time to relax and release so you would just give your sound cue once you sit her down, and then listen for the pee. There is usually a facial expression if they poop. To know when it's time though, look out for any shifts in behavior (usually higher energy/fussing/antsiness for pee) that could be your baby's "pee pee dance".
What do you do on workdays?
At the time this was filmed (7 months), I worked full time as a professional architect. My partner was also working full time outside the house, and we had an au pair for full time childcare for both children. We taught her how to use EC to recognize signals and offer the potty the same way we would, she was happy to learn and very supportive! She used diapers as a backup just like we did, and caught what she could just like we did. We chose an in home childcare option instead of daycare because not only did it make sense financially if you have more than one child, it provided a less stressful routine for everyone and gave us flexibility to have a provider that was actually willing to support our daughter with EC (and our son was also wrapping up potty training around that time too)
@@readyfrombirth that’s really great, thanks so much for sharing this. I’ll work on doing something similar. I have a 7 month old and I work from home but working on lining up some help
Hi! Just wondering about baby getting cold out of the diaper whilst feeding. Do you use anything to cover their legs and keep them comfortable once nappy comes off?
Yes! Great question. It's definitely important to keep your newborn warm, a very young baby is still learning to regulate their body temp! You can use tall thigh high socks or leg warmers, or just lay a blanket over top. Note for little boys though, having a visual on your baby can help you see when he is about to pee, and you may need to manually aim to get his stream to actually go IN the top hat potty as sometimes it will just come straight out.
First time mum here, I'd love to hear more about your breastfeeding journey & opinions!
Thanks for the idea! I have a lot to say about that 😂

Super helpful and encouraging video! We have been ECing since birth, and our 13 month sits on the potty every morning very happily and goes successfully, but every other diaper change when I offer the potty he doesn't have as much fun sitting on the potty, where as he used to have no issues when i sat him down, so I have been feeling this struggle.
Thank you! At 13 months he is ready to start choosing potty time for himself! Congratulations on making it this far with EC, such a gift you are giving your son! ❤️
That’s amazing ❤
What potty would you recommend for a 4 month old?
This is happening for us. She’s 4 months now and she has started crying when i hold her over the toilet. I’ve been offering the toilet for about 6-8 weeks now. I tried my friend’s top hat potty at her house and she seemed very unsure of that. She’s doing well but I haven’t been able to work out the source of her crying yet.
There is actually another leap around 4 months! Most of my members report that their babies get much fussier, cry at potty time, and signal less around that time. The top hat potty is probably too small for her at this age, offering the toilet can work great and it's also a great time to introduce a floor potty she'll be able to use independently in just a few months!
Really would like to try this. Pregnant with twins so will be a bit more of a job I’m guessing. Any ideas of how this would work with two?
It will be twice as much work, but it's important to remember you don't have to catch everything! If you can potty after naps and feedings, that can really help. And I highly recommend you get two potties for once they can sit unassisted around 5-6 months! There are moms in my community who do it with twins, it is more work but can definitely be done! And we'll worth it, otherwise you'll be changing twice as many diapers for twice as long!
Such a good explanation, thank you for this!
Thank you, I'm so glad it was helpful!
I did EC with my daughter from three weeks old. I remember when she was somewhere between four and six months and my sister was holding her. She looked over at me with a log of urgency and I just knew she had to go potty. I grabbed her from my sister walked over to the bathroom and she went potty. I also have a video from when she was 2 1/2, nursing on me when she stops and started trying to get my attention… I didn’t realize that at the time while I was taking the video, but a few weeks later, I realize that she was trying to tell me she had to go potty. And I remember I cut the video off real fast because I felt her rumble. And the video she even said the word “poo poo” because slapping my face wasn’t clear enough for me, but you don’t think that a baby at that age can form a logical sound to portray their need so it went completely over my head until I heard it while re-watching the video. But it makes sense cause that is a very simple sound to make and she heard it about 5 million times a day for the last two months. They know, they just can’t get their own their own.
Love this! Thanks so much for sharing your story!
This is such a gem of a video. Thank you so much! Holding the baby in a cradle instead of leaning against the chest is such a good tip
Thank you, I'm so glad it was helpful! As long as they feel supported potty time will be much easier!
I have been given a snoo bassinet for my baby (due feb). There is a function which is designed to rock them when they become unsettled in the night (it’s supposed to get them back to sleep if they’re not hungry, just unsettled, it turns off if they don’t settle because that means they’re hungry or need your attention). Do you think that would make EC less effective because perhaps when the baby becomes unsettled but could go back to sleep, they actually want to pee or poo?
A young baby might become unsettled for a number of reasons in the night, primarily because their sleep cycles are immature and relatively short, so they will kind of rouse at the top of each cycle but usually will put themselves back to sleep if they are not too hungry or needing to potty. (However with a newborn-2 months, they would need to feed throughout the night and I would expect a pee/poop each time) So a snoo could be helpful just to help bridge that sleep gap, but generally if they really need to potty it will not work and they would let you know! My rule of thumb with EC at night is to only offer if they are fully awake and asking or you already have their diaper off. I would try it, and trust your intuition! If you're laying there thinking, I think they might actually need to potty...they probably do!
I've been doing ec part time since birth with my 13 mo, and the last month has been a power struggle. Is it too far gone now that it's become a matter of independence and she has no interest in sitting on the potty? She tells me no, stands up, or gets off immediately almost every time now.
There is definitely a regression that occurs in many babies in the 10-12ish month range that corresponds to your baby's growing understanding of their independence from you, and the ability to say no and do something other than what you've asked. It is super common for a baby/young toddler to know EXACTLY where she's supposed to poop, and then run off and poop on the floor at this age. But, it's a normal developmental phase! Frustrating, but it WILL pass if you stay calm and neutral and it also indicates that your baby will be ready to transition out of diapers on the other side. Don't give up! If you've been practicing since birth, she knows the drill. Choosing not to sit is about testing her independence and control (basically the entirety of parenting a toddler 😅), so don't let potty time become a power struggle and do what you can not to let your frustration show. It can help to make pottying fun again!
Also, how long have you got between noticing the cue (or on waking?) and baby starting... i worry about the time between taking Nappy off and walking to the bathroom
It depends how long your baby has been practicing! Their muscles of control will get stronger and stronger the more they practice, so even if they need to go immediately upon waking they can hold it the minute while you get them to the bathroom. You might also try just taking the diaper off in the bathroom! Carrying your baby in a hip carry with pressure on their pelvic floor can help prevent an accident while transferring also
how long do you wait while offering an opportunity? 30 seconds? 2 minutes? 5 minutes? Thanks!
With a young baby who can't get off on their own, no more than 3 minutes for something to start, or for them to clearly tell you "no thanks"! It can take a few minutes for them to relax and something to come out, but if it's not happening by then they don't need to go. Try again later next time they signal or at the next out opportunity. A mobile baby will get off the potty on their own pretty much immediately if they don't need to go
I introduced my baby to potty at 2 weeks. And now at 3 months she doesnt let me know like she used to. And also shes stopped pooping as much as she used to before we started ec.
Signals will continue to change as your baby grows! The way a newborn signals is very instinctual, and that type of cry/agitation will typically fade by around 3 months. But if you've been practicing consistently she will learn that she can ask, and may be using a new signal! Pay close attention to her body language and facial expressions leading up to potty time, you may notice that she IS signalling! Also, poop routines will change and consolidate as your baby grows! A newborn may poop 6-8+ times a day (as many as feeds) while a 3 month old is getting more efficient at converting milk to energy and will poop significantly less.
@readyfrombirth ok. Thank you so much. Thanks to your videos I can now see she is still showing signs. And letting me know when she needs to go.
I have a question..what if your a working mom, and baby goes to day care or a relative watches her what happens to EC then? Im sure the daycare or babysitter isnt going to follow thru. Maybe a relative but they dont know how to recognize the babies cues! What do you do in that scenario? You dont want all the progress youve made to go back to square one..my kids are grown and grandkids are teenagers but i just find EC so interesting and amazing and it makes all the sense in the world!!
It is true that most daycares don't want anything to do with EC (for now, but increasing demand may change that), but it's really easy to teach a nanny, babysitter, or grandparent the cues and how to do it! We have had an au pair, I taught her how to do EC with my daughter early on and she does a great job keeping up with it, even with two children to look after. But if a family needs to use daycare, they can still do "part time EC" with the baby at home and most babies understand and continue to make progress!
My partner and I both work full time out of the house, and for various reasons it was more affordable to choose an au pair than to have two kids in full time daycare where we live (literally would have been twice our mortgage). Nanny shares or time swaps with other families are also an option, they just require some more work up front to arrange but there are options when it comes to childcare if a family can't find a daycare that is willing to support EC
Because your just holding her over for the video and she has a diaper on might she just pee ? Thinking this is the position etc? Diaper or not? Lol
Don't worry, she pottied right before we filmed this! And we also use a sound cue to let her know it's an appropriate time to go, that can help so they don't just pee whenever!
She's beautiful ❤😊
Wow this was a really informative video
such a helpful video. excited to try it with my newborn once she's born in the fall. thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
I literally had to change daycare providers because she would ignore my child. When she asked to go to the potty.
Unfortunately this is super common! The mentality that "babies aren't ready until X age" is rampant in daycares, just like it is in the population generally. Working hard to change that! Were you able to find a provider who DID support your child?
@@readyfrombirth Yes! she starts a new daycare on Monday they actually help with the potty training process.
Don’t feel so bad about your little boy having accidents, especially at night. My daughter, when she was about a year old, I realize that she was waking up at night so often because she had to go pee. I would nurse her and change her and try to get her to potty and then put her back to sleep and she’d wake back up because she had a full bladder. When I stopped nursing her at night and just trying to wake her up to use the potty, it was not going well. When I realized that she would pee herself about 2 to 3 hours after going down to bed, when she was about 15 months old, I started trying to nighttime potty train her. She what also go two or three days a week where she would stay dry all night. Her body would wake her up, needing to go potty, but she was so tired and need to sleep that she would refuse to use the potty. There was one night specifically that I struggled for like two hours to try to get her to use the potty at night, I would hear her whining on the monitor so I run in there and try to get her on the potty but she would flip out like she didn’t have to go and then put yourself back to sleep for 10 minutes. Until finally, I hear her saying “no no no” because the pressure on her bladder was not stronger than her will to stay dry during the night. And ever since then she has struggled at night, only waking up dry once or twice every two weeks. And daytime has been difficult also, with some days being completely dry with potty cartons, and other days refusing to use the potty when I ask her and then having an accident five minutes later, waiting to a total of 2 to 6 accidents over the next two hours until her bladders finally empty. And at 2 1/2 she keeps trying to tell me that she wants a diaper, I’m pretty sure part of the reason is because it’s easier to hide her pee so that I don’t notice it immediately. But she actually does try to poop in the toilet, she only has a poo accident about once a week.
9:19 Think about how many tons of waste that would stay out of the landfill
I have a video my first daughter was about two months old. She was nursing on me while I was on the computer and she pulled back to try to get my attention. I didn’t realize what she was doing and thought she just wanted me to pay attention to her nursing so that it wouldn’t be like boring or something. you know kids nursing they want your attention they want your love and affection and I thought that’s what she was doing just like hey stop paying attention to the computer and pay attention to me. Well, that is what she was doing, but not quite in the way that I thought. Because even after I started paying attention to her and starting to record a video on my phone, she was still giving me weird looks and like slapping my chest and stuff. I didn’t realize for almost 2 minutes that she was trying to tell me she had to go poop. And I also didn’t pick up those signals until watching the video a few months later. I was so dense to the idea that my two month old can communicate with me that I wasn’t seeing her do it right in front of me. When she was about five or six months old, we would have her in the bed with us a lot, and some kind of sleeper thing to make her bigger so that we went and roll over and she would wake up every morning, slapping me in the face when she had to go poop. It didn’t take long for me to figure that one out, but it was so early in the morning that I sometimes ignore it until she soiled herself. Which of course did not help the situation here we are 2 1/2 months old. She has an average one poop accident a week and a lot of peeing on purpose. I don’t know if she is ignoring her body sensations because I was ignoring her body sensations, or if she’s just too distracted to give her body needs.to potty train.
A lot of it in the video with spatial expression. But there was hitting me, kind of smiling before babies really able to social smile, indicating gas or pressure, and, I kid you not, she said “poo poo” I was putting her on the potty every 45 to 90 minutes at the time during the day and every time I would do it I would poo poo poo poo poo. Poo. Poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo poo. Poo. She learned how to say because it’s a very simple sound and I have it on video

So good! Thank you ❤
Thanks for watching!
Q: for night time feeds I never ever sat up. I only did sidelying. I assume that won’t work for night pottying. So optimal to sit up at night to nurse to use the potty hat? Or could I offer the potty, side nurse, offer potty again before switching sides ??
Great question! You are correct that you can't potty while side lying (at least I haven't figured out a way to do it yet), but you also can know your baby's usual patterns and cues and offer at the key moments, for example if you KNOW your baby always poops at the 4-5am feed you could sit up and feed over the top hat for that one, but do side lying otherwise. Your baby will also let you know if they really need the potty, and usually will NOT settle back for sleep if they do. Many times I would try to nurse my daughter back to sleep side lying, and I would be nearly asleep and then she would sit up in bed and look around 😂 that was my cue, and I'd offer and then she could quickly go back to sleep after that. So you don't have to offer EVERY time at night, but it helps to pay attention to patterns and tune in to your baby's needs in the moment
I practiced part time EC with my first. I was a busy student midwife at the time and we did it full time at home (not at night because I had to prioritize sleep for births). We used cotton diapers when I was out at births with her. Anytime I was out in public I’d pottty her. So I was working full time as a home birth student and in school and it really FIT well. We just did it and it was so convenient to have a 5 month old pooing on the potty full time. She eventually started holding births and that was so cool. Night time diapers until 18 months. Daytime free of diapers though. I am due with # 2 soon and I’m hoping to do more full time and do nights this time.
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with EC! It just goes to show how personal the needs of your particular life and family can be, and you can still do EC successfully and enjoy the benefits of convenience, developing her ability to hold it and wait, and ultimately enjoy full diaper freedom by 18 months! Love this so much ☺️
I would like to try this, how do you do on public?
In public, I either find a public restroom and hold her in a classic EC hold over the toilet (or sink at the doctor's office 😂) or if I'm outside it's easy to find a private-ish spot to potty a baby over the ground! I don't try to feed over the top hat in public though, I would feed and then potty sequentially
I got peed on most of time when iam carrying the baby disaper free Have you not got peed on ??
I have definitely been peed on a few times! But to prevent that from happening you can try carrying your baby in a hip carry so their legs are around your body and there's pressure on their diaper area, or if you're burping them you can have a cloth in your hand pushing up against their bum. You just want to make sure there's pressure and not open space
What about when the newborn wakes up in the night? How do you accomplish that being so tired 😅
You're definitely going to be tired regardless! But the poop and the diaper change are inevitable, so I just offer a chance to potty as soon as they wake up, then either breastfeed over the top hat or offer again right after you're done feeding. They usually pee/poop during or immediately after the feed so I personally think it's easiest to just leave their diaper off and feed over a potty! The baby bjorn white insert works well for this too, several mamas in my Community have shared that that worked for them!
Do you know about when in your EC journey your baby no longer pottied every time she was eating and was starting to hold it till after? I’m looking forward to when I no longer have to hold a potty while simultaneously breastfeeding. 😅 My LO is 7 weeks and we’re just getting started. I don’t want to lose motivation when I start to get frustrated.
I completely understand 😂 like all things in the newborn period, it will get easier soon I promise. Things started to change a lot around 3 months, and both our babies started sleeping through the night around then. We continued to use the top hat until about 4-5 months, but she could make it through a feed by then for the most part. You can also just stop mid feed to potty and come back if that feels easier to you, I personally always had a hard time getting a second let down so pottying while breastfeeding worked better for me. Experiment :)
Do you find that babies that also use a baby seat have some confusion between that and their potty?
Can you clarify what you mean by a baby seat? I would think most likely not, especially if they are usually wearing a diaper/backup or clothing!
How do you do the potty with the thompson method of breastfeeding. I don’t see how i could hold the potty for him to go in the thompson method (pain free breastfeeding method). And thats the only breastfeeding method that works for my tongue tied baby and I. Every latch style and procedure the IBCLCs gave me made it worse. And im not going back to blistered nipples after just healing😂
I had never heard of the Thompson method of breastfeeding so I looked it up, but so far am having a hard time figuring out what it is specifically (that makes it different from breastfeeding in general). Do you know of a good source where I can learn more about it? I absolutely agree, you do NOT want to go back to painful breastfeeding! I want to know more about it before offering thoughts on this
Thank you for making this video! I’ve been thinking to myself through my whole pregnancy that there has to be a better way than dealing with diapers for the next 2 years, & then a friend sent me a video of yours on Instagram. Grateful for your knowledge on this. Getting a top hat potty today & I downloaded your guide. Thank you so much! ❤
Yay!! I'm so glad this information found you just in time!! 💗
This is extremely helpful. I always thought EC meant no diaper at all.
Same! It was hard to imagine that working for US, but once we tried it it makes so much sense!
Thanks for such great info!!
You're so welcome! Thanks for watching!
Love this well done mummy good job she's such a clever girl
Very helpful and thank you so much!
You're so welcome!
Very helpful thank you :). My ten week old poops every 2-3 days and struggles with digestion, so I don’t often catch poops and their early soft cues . But I do see the hard cues when it’s too late! 😄 What do you think of inviting a baby to pee in the sink (in the same classic EC posture, against by body with legs propped up ) as soon as they wake up every time, Instead of using a potty?
Actually, I just looked another video of yours and you explain it super well here! ua-cam.com/video/e_SX7LWt8nU/v-deo.htmlsi=DMeSIMBmapnLAeUM So thanks for that! If I understood correctly, the top hat is nice because it keeps things seamless and easier for everyone. But it’s not obligatory. that sometimes they don’t poop for two or three days and that’s completely normal. So perhaps just a disclaimer for breast-feeding moms I’m really hoping it’ll go well for my 10 week old, I’ve been taking off her diaper sometimes since birth and observing her, but I only see a queue when she’s actually peeing. I don’t catch soft cues yet. Am I too late or something? Also, I do have some concentration issues so it is possible that I’m just getting distracted. 😅 Thanks for all this! And one tiny tip, try to increase the volume of your videos. I noticed that the volume is quite low for all of them. It’s more difficult to hear you in public transport. :) All the best!
Thanks so much for the feedback! First off, you can potty your baby in whatever way works best for you! I have a video all about different ways to potty as well, with and without an actual potty. I highly recommend that you practice the classic hold as much as you reasonably can so your baby is comfortable with it, that one will allow you to potty them absolutely anywhere with no gear on hand! Being comfortable is essential for your baby to be able to let go when you offer, so familiarizing them with the Classic can help you out later :) That's a great point you bring up about breastfed babies not pooping every day. My son actually went over a week without pooping around 6 months before starting solids, I read that it just means they are absorbing basically everything in the milk and there's nothing left to eliminate. As for my volume, thanks for that! I probably need to get a microphone 😅
