    The very nature of the concept of history is about projecting power. It has nothing to do with creating heaven on Earth. White people exist because black people do. So, history has nothing to do with some individual's idea of what should be or shouldn't be. Groups are in a struggle for dominance to maintain themselves. Also, life in the ghetto is nothing like life in white suburbs reflected in history. Why must history be fought over? Some people do not believe that forgetting what happened will make them "feel good," and, remarkably, ignoring all of reality will solve all problems. I suspect that the idea of "America," the concept of the land of the free, and the ongoing paradise on Earth cause this. However, I bet you that no self-respecting Jewish person feels this way about "forgetting." If I were you, someone who doesn't "look black," I'd shut about the whole thing and enjoy being whatever you want to be. Lecturing others about something serious that doesn't apparently pertain to you makes you appear silly and childlike. Black history exists, based on my understanding as a "black" person, because most people in power prefer that blacks (formerly enslaved people) didn't exist at all. History is not about our feelings but about projecting power and defending one's life. And, if you give history some "serious" thought, consider that never mind Earth; there is no heaven anywhere in the entire universe. May these thoughts give you greater humility, comfort, and purpose. Finally, a question for you? Would you say "hate" has become a powerful, often used, and misapplied word?

    When it comes to the aforementioned historical figures, who are all undeniably biracial, you have to evaluate them in the context of their time. All of them would be considered black (the option to even select multiracial/multiple racial categories didn't occur until the 2000 census) due to things like the "one-drop rule" and other racist laws and customs, and their phenotypic appearance (in most, not all cases). I do think nowadays it would be important to emphasize the role of biracial people in the context of American history, especially helpful for the growing numbers of multiracial Americans. While I wish everyone didn't need a specific "history month" I also don't agree with Morgan Freeman that "not talking about race" will make the problem go away. I think we should be able to talk about it, acknowledge our differences and celebrate not only the differences, but the things that also make us the same, and unites us as Americans and/or as humans.

  • @rodeanabean4019

    If there is no black history month, black history would not be taught. Young black children would have no heroes in a society that condoms everything about that people look like they do. This society thinks black features like broad noses, full lips, black skin are ugly and people who have those features are inferior. And not identifying (overlooking) the positive elements of blackness will not make society's negative perception of blacks go away.

Woodson created Black History Week which evolved into Black History Month was in response to the fact that Black History was not taught at all. By the way, most African Americans are not 100% African because America's true history involves the rape and sexual assault of Black Women. You short list doesn't capture the essence of our story. Your privilege and lack of understanding of Black History is showing.

Not just Black history, but Native American, Asian, Marshallese, women and countless other groups. When the world stops minimizing the contributions of people that are not Northern European there will no longer be a reason to highlight this issue. Give a history quiz to your non black friends highlighting the achievements of black people and see how knowledgeable they are compared to when you give a quiz to African Americans on White accomplishments.

    I don’t like invalidating anecdotes because that’s ppl’s real life experience, but you’re reasons need a to more context. You need more context. Like why it exists in the first place. The erasure of black accomplishments in American history. White washed teaching of that history. Also that Morgan interview is some bullshit but that’s beside the point. You’re entitled to feel how want, whichever way you do, but to “hate” because it seemingly disclosed biracial identities is not the take you might think it is. Ppl telling you that you’re not black, regardless of whom told you speaks more to that lack of education and understanding rather than… otherwise. Malcolm X, J Cole, Drake. That’s black history, they mixed tho, and they still some niggas. Proudly too. But i digress. Black history month is important dawg.

    Also, I wonder Nate whether your mother is white or your father is white. I do think there seems to be a difference in the way biracials from black women view themselves in the world, then biracials that have white mothers. I think it’s important to mention culture. Someone’s culture doesn’t always jive with her ethnicity. I have met some of the blackest white people in the world. I have met some Black people, including my sister, who are kind of lost in the black community. I’m sure the same is seen in other minority communities as well

    • @Th3NateFleming

    • @hockeygirl8401

      @@Th3NateFleming yeah, I hear you. Culture is such an added complexity. In general, I do find that mixed children of black mothers seem to be more black identifying. They seem to have a better grasp of who they are. Of course there are exceptions. I do think it’s important to note that cultural norms are past on to the child through the mother. I remember this from sociology class. It’s almost like how I imagine trans people feel when their gender doesn’t really match their life experience. I feel like sometimes people’s colour doesn’t always match their culture or their life experience. Sometimes we just jive with people. I wish to God that we could get over this nonsense on melanination but human beings have been obsessing for centuries, and I don’t know that we can stop… this obsession over something that’s not even biologically substantial has really hindered our species .

    • @HappyRoach1
      @HappyRoach1 6 місяців тому

      @@hockeygirl8401 Not always. Some black mothers of mixed race children were sometimes the black girls who weren't considered "black enough." They sounded like Hilary Banks or Harris Faulker (Fox New host) when they spoke. They grew up loving The Smiths, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Beatles, The Doors, and other rock bands. They grew up with on crushes on guys like Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Johnny Depp, Keanu Reeves, River Phoenix, Trent Reznor, Phil Anselmo, Peter Steele, and Ethan Hawke. I have met black females from Haiti, Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, Belize, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Morocco, Ethiopia, Eritrea, and Somalia. Despite being born and raised in a nation with a significant black population. They're into a lot of mainstream white American culture. When they get to the United States or even somewhere in Europe. All they date is white guys. They marry white guys and have mixed race children. The mixed race children will often identify with their father's heritage, even if they look pretty black. Sometimes these mixed race offspring will often date and marry non-black people. There are some black women who preferred Latino, Asian, Arab, Indian, or Polynesian men, and have children with them. Then these kids were mostly raised in their father's culture. Speaks their father's language. Will marry someone from their father's community rather then a black woman. I'm from NYC. America gets a big fat F for telling histories about non-white people. It’s an issue it’s not gonna go away because other human beings like to subject other human beings because we have a pride problem. As long as we stop viewing each other as humans, we will continue to have these issues. Pretending that hundreds of years of the subjugation of Melanated people in a world where they are literally the majority will not seize because we want to ignore it. Morgan Freeman is wrong. Pretending America doesn’t have a racial problem. It’s like pretending someone’s not pregnant. Eventually the issues of their pregnancy are going to come forth and the baby will be born. If America doesn’t start recognizing it’s past so that we can all move forward we will never be a united people, and eventually our country will fail. United into the future or divided we will fall.

  • @hockeygirl8401
    @hockeygirl8401 6 місяців тому

    Dude, I’m sorry that you have a real racial identity issue. I do understand where you’re coming from. However, I think you’ve been in some bad spaces man. I was talking to my mother before she died about this very issue. OK so my mom was very racially ambiguous most of her life. She identified as African-American because she grew up around black folks, and there was no question about who she was because of the one drop rule. She grew up in Jim Crow south. You had to pick a side there. I don’t think you would have the same issue prior to 1960. Mixed people were always a part of the black community. My grandmother was mixed ethnically with a White Father and there was no dispute that she was definitely black. The Adam Clayton Powell’s of our community are the very reason why we were able to prosper. You’re right we don’t discuss a lot about why are most important leaders of early history after emancipation were mixed race. That’s a fail. Don’t ever allow one group of people to determine where you belong. You can on everything you are, and still identify as black or identify as mixed. The consciousness of that is the problem of the person who is judging it. You don’t have to absorb their issues into your mind. It can be a them problem and not a you problem. You’re making it difficult for yourself because you’re allowing people to categorize you. This is the freedom that my mother felt. She just embraced everything she was. Sometimes she felt like telling people “ what she was” and sometimes she told them to go kick rocks and stop obsessing over what race she is. Relax and educate yourself about black history. You have, and you will always be a part of that. You’re making black history right this very moment.

    Morgan Freeman isn't correct. Racism won't go away because people stop talking about it. It will stop when racist are exposed and it becomes the norm that they are not tolerated by anyone, especially those who they share their ethnicity with. As for this month, it's about the mass exposure of the parts of our peoples history that had been systematically hidden, and in many cases changed in the way it's told. The separation of it having a specific month has a lot to do with the fact that white history is told everywhere all of the time. To each his or her own, but instead of hating the month,hate the reason why it was created and help address those things which still exist today.
