Hiking in early spring can be really fun! This time we took a hike up Compounce Mountain (which looks over Lake Compounce and the amusement park there) to Julian's Rock. Who was Julian? @rupe53 Місяць тому

That old bridge was not new or built for that location. It served its first 100 years as a RR bridge at another location, then was moved to Bridgeport in the WWII era. (forgot the exact date) Rumor has it the cause of the fire was probably a discarded butt tossed out of a passing car that set the wooden structure on fire. 150 year old wood is like that, right?

@@tinman4585 yeah, probably not directly, but if that butt got into a bird's nest on the side of the structure, that would do it. I recall hearing that on the local news because the FD stated there were no other malfunctions to blame, which is how they were able to swing the bridge open after the fire.

I was there as a child in the 1950’s and rode all the rides and actually swam over to it with a buddy in the 1960’s I think, from Ten Cent Point in Stratford at low tide. We were looking for a job. The roller coaster was a legend, shaking and creaking and fast and the carousel was a work of art and even had the brass ring you reached for. If you got it you got a free ride. The bumper cars were great too..I think the town of Stratford owned part of the island and that’s why cottages were there on the end part of the island. After the bridge burned the politicians in Bridgeport wanted this place to die and never would rebuild the bridge. They sure got their way. Too bad because it was a great place. I think the horses from the carousel have been preserved at Beardsley Park in Bridgeport. Sadly Bridgeport was once a powerhouse of industrial manufacturing and the tool and die industry. This is where Bridgeport Machine was along with Remington, Carpenter Steel, Bryant Electric, Warner Manufacturing, Harvey Hubble, Singer Sewing Machine, Metropolitan Body that made the METRO delivery trucks, GE Wire and Cable, International Bakeries that made Wonder Bread, Acme Shear, and many many others. Remington even had a special place where they blended gunpowder for the Czar of Russia. Think it was over on Stratford Road as gun manufacturing was further downtown. Even the old Locomobile automobile was produced here from 1900 to 1929. Politics, and resistance to change and adaptation hurt Bridgeport badly along with cheaper foreign production. It’s history is truly amazing though if you care to study it. Even P.T. Barnum was once the Mayor here and there is still a museum by his name. The city survives today but only a shadow of it great past. Two beautiful movie theatres were there also, the Lowes Poli and the Lowes Majestic. Don’t know if they are still standing but their interior architecture was absolutely beautiful. Some of her past structures are still there if you care to look for them.

As a youth my buddy and I searched for a Leatherman cave in North Salem NY, one of his stops. We lived our summers on Lake Waccabuc in South Salem. There were no paths just locals telling us, “somewhere in those woods” but it was too thick and we did not find it. The locals showed us where to start in but we never found it. Still yet to be discovered by non-iPhone and gizmo addicted youth! Are there any of us left? Good hike video!

The rock formation you call the Leatherman Cave is incorrect. The correct name is the Rock House. Until the 16th edition of the CFPA Connecticut Walk Books (1990) it was called it this. For unknown reasons, the name was changed to Leatherman Cave In the 17th edition (1993). The true Leatherman Cave is on a feeder trail near Route 6 at GPS 41.64113, -73.09253. There is a new sign next to it. Please check it out.
