Is Heart School dead?
the full harvest moon rose as the september sun set and clarity came as the trees began to bleed orange
so continues the integrity cleanse / purge!
and with it, a new transmission...
tl:dw: got rid of phony copy, fugly branding, semi-killed heart school, and let go of attachment to intended outcomes and goals
🍂
As the trees bleed their leaves orange
I meet the extent to which I don’t believe in wellnessTM, spiritual narcissism and the addictive striving of self-improvement
I don’t believe in social media feeds and giving anyone cause to look at them through any form of content creation yet I still feel to rear my head there occasionally..
For a time I did believe in Heart School
Just as I really did believe I was in love with a drummer I didn’t know
But what if it was all my own shadow?
Much art I’ve made has been the product of dysfunction dysregulation divergence and I don’t do that any more or advocate it
But it has been a tool of awareness
Heart School’s inauthenticity was in the shallowness of the shadow work and how I felt more HATE SCHOOL inside but can't meet people with that yet
The call for love, validation, connection and a soft uncritical permissive approach to creation has a flipside of chronic people pleasing, conflict avoidance, and masking
Which, in the post-pandemic love bubble of naive, performative spirituality, fake abundance, and "community" love bombing, felt so enticing against inundation with performative victimhood, activism and polarisation
Then we all became "creators" or "solopreneurs"!
In all that creation, brand building… where was the get out clause?
I reserve the right to disclaim pull the rug out from under ALL of it in the name of the tower crashing down
NOTHING I studied in 6 years of art & design education could’ve predicted the creator economy
Resistance is not to be resisted
Let it go!
What you resist persists. Let the fuck go!
If it’s not flowing, it’s going
Just ride the fucking wave!
Relax into the vehicle
Let it go
now to binge emily in paris..

I CONQUERED My Inner Conflict Using THIS Parts Work Exercise!

I recently did an exercise, inspired by parts work - or internal family systems - that involved holding a sort of 'committe meeting' to give space for all of the parts of me to vent, express, and be heard. I was pleasantly surprised to stumble on mention of a musicians with disabilities night at London's Cafe Oto via The Wire magazine. Not sure how much of a network the organizers have beyond their immediate area but inter-regional coordination of such events would certainly benefit participants.

    I have something which I don’t know is even envy anymore, I don’t know what it is, or how to frame it, it’s more like I just want everyone to be seen and heard and I get annoyed and angry at those who seem to take up more “space” in the creative fields, but then I’m not really annoyed at them as I know if I was successful then I’d want that attention too, well even I do want that attention, but then I don’t necessarily want the life, like you said..I don’t know my brain gets confused 😅

    Late diagnosed and middle-aged AuDHD here, and I absolutely LOVED watching this - I recognize the accompanying gestural flow of discourse as identical to my own mannerisms (incidentally I am similarly special-interested in creativity as a holistic process, having spent several years doing music journalism with that specific focus.) When I'm in the flow of discussing a particularly interesting subject I can't help but gesture because it reflects (mirrors?) the spatial organization of my thoughts (I recommend Nancy Kress's novel Beggars in Spain for the only portrayal I've found of this in fiction.) That said, having lived 98% of my life undiagnosed, I always presumed my "difference" was due to highly intelligent eccentricity - I find the majority of people boring and solipsistically preoccupied with superficial material concerns - to my mind, "weird" is their word for us and while it makes for a conveniently disarming shorthand when conversing with NTs, I've always felt it's * their * ways of being that are weird (e.g. commonplace apathy, complacency, bigotry, and wilful ignorance make no sense to me but they clearly feel entitled to those behaviours.) In my experience it takes very little effort to accept others' "unusual" behaviours as personal mannerisms which require no special labels; what's weird to me is the neurotypical tendency to arbitrarily assign negative value judgements based on them.

      Absolutely, that's an equanimous abundance attitude one should aspire to. I guess this vid speaks to the egoic defensive wounded self that can calcify over the innate trust and excitement for all of us on our respective journeys and trusting the sacred reciprocity of how we inspire and illuminate each other as we glow in our unique ways

    • @BIG_MUNKY
      @BIG_MUNKY 4 місяці тому

      @@heart.school It was fascinating because most of the times you don’t really hear these things out loud, they’re just the little demons in your head. Also scary how similar to my own demons your thoughts were. I believe you had to be in that state of mind already to film this video, and you having the notion of what you were feeling and deciding to vocalize it on camera, that’s pretty cool!

    • @heart.school
      @heart.school 4 місяці тому

      @@BIG_MUNKY yeah, I kind of was in the state of mind but also these thought patterns feel so well worn and familiar that if I start there's so much bile there ready to fire on autopilot. I think this is the principle behind things like morning pages, or even cognitive behavioural therapy and thought-based expression and observation because ultimately the mind is often so brilliantly conditioned into running the scripts it runs. And if there's a strong inner critic or part (to use IFS parts work terminology) that voice will have had a lot of air time - it's been the most dominant voice in my consciousness and inner mono/dialogue for about 15/6 years since late adolescence so in all that time there's been a lot of mindfulness and attempts to observe and distance from it which is where the ability to film comes in guess. Also there's something about filming/writing/creative expression that has always served me in moments when I'm really identified with the thoughts - I've got myself out of rotten states or found an iota if self-compassion in the most self-destructive states by filming myself and just witnessing how much suffering is there on multiple occasions. Haven't shared those before but it could be interesting to. a few people have told me this incessant and rabid nature of the human mind and inner voice is what "A Course in Miracles" is supposed to help with, as it claims that what you refer to as the demons (so similar to mine) are almost part and parcel of the human conditioned ego mind, so I have some sense that it could help too although haven't fully explored yet, some principles seem similar to Eckhart Tolle and general mindfulness and things that most spiritual teachings are ultimately trying to get at in terms of detachment and transcendence of human suffering ego mind state. It's interesting being somewhat stuck in the suffering of believing thoughts whilst also being the observer, a position facilitated by the distancing of documenting it

    AGREED! Prior to the modern capitalist practice of remotely distributing music recordings first via broadcast then via internet, it was common for local venues to have a live house band. This is desperately needed today not only to combat the gentrification of culture but also to employ and support local musicians and local music culture. Tech companies are inadvertently helping to create the need for this by their algorithmic fiddlings that constantly push one privileged set of profitable recordings over all others: when the same top 40 playlist is the only thing one can hear wherever one goes, it starts to get pretty dull and boring for listeners. Reestablishing local arts/music events and networks ought to be the highest priority if we ever want to escape consumer capitalism's cultural illiteracy.

    • @heart.school
      @heart.school 4 місяці тому

      Great points and indeed, there's something to be said - in a similar way to buying local and investing in localism economically and in terms of services and produce - for similar approach to supporting the local artists /musicians / radio and for artists who are increasingly demoralised and devalued by the immense oversaturation and competition of the digital attention economy to put there focus closer to home

      @heart.school 6 місяців тому

      Ooo please say more! Yes it came across as quite gatekeepy / defensive, as if only a certain level of 'difference' or 'dysfunction' qualifies you for any recognition or support. I have recently had another depression diagnosis and sometimes minimise my experience because I think oh well if I'm not catatonic and I'm still partly functioning I can't have it that bad. I didn't say this in the video but there's something about her speaking for her daughter in general that made me very uncomfortable. I understood the point about if you don't need speech therapy or can 'mask' well enough then what are you hoping to gain through diagnosis. But yeah, it's a bit of a scarcity mindset like only the absolute most extreme cases are worthy of any kind of accommodation and the rest of us can just mask if we've managed this far

    • @lukexfd4679
      @lukexfd4679 6 місяців тому

      @@heart.school Yeah very gatekeepery and dismissive of people with different levels of support needs The “trending” is way overstated and tiktok’s blackbox algorithm isn’t reflective of the wider world. I think a more pernicious backlash comes from the popularisation of words like “acoustic” and “restarted” to undermine and belittle (in a sneaky obfuscated way) These “backlashes” also pale in comparison to the positives which are coming about after years of autism being misunderstood, under diagnosed and misdiagnosed (especially for girls/women and ethnic minorities amongst others) The more you lift the lid on suspected autism etc and the more you unmask (if possible as it’s a difficult process) the more you allow yourself to be you, which can lead to e.g. skill regression and inability to mask as effectively as before I don’t think we should have to justify seeking diagnoses. GPs or whichever medical professionals will go through the very specific diagnostic criteria before referring (and generally throw in a helping of dismissiveness and minimising as well) so it’s not like anyone can just get a diagnosis, plus who would want to wait for months/years if they weren’t fairly convinced Abbey’s mom, Christine, gets a lot of flack on tiktok and from Love on the Spectrum, but it’s a balancing act to support/advocate without encroaching on someone's (Abbey’s) autonomy/agency (my two favourite words). It’s not my place or within my ken to say whether she is getting it right (generally it seems she is) Soz I’ve yakked on and with no authority to do so. Say less say less!! :)

    I don't feel like this video was particularly succint or articulate and I might well record another one. But I'm thinking about this a lot in relation to performative ethics as well. This article outlines it wonderfully - pascalleroux.medium.com/narcissists-and-performative-ethics-61d572ce00d3 - and if anyone has any videos or hot takes on narcissism and need for creative success or visibility, I would really appreciate those. i remember one of the wisdom of trauma or nonduality conferernces once a conversation between Sia and Gabor Mate about the trauma-driven musician success train or something like that. I will try to find it. But if anyone else gets what I'm getting at here please let me know

    • @jemmarosenthal
      @jemmarosenthal 7 місяців тому

      I think it was well articulated. I can relate to a lot of these things and I don't think it's actually the artists fault that we end up thinking some of these things, it's more the scarcity mindset that is taught and also capitalism. So I think looking at these things as concepts that we have to break down within our own minds, and also recognise when we are thinking and knowing it's not our fault. (As long as we arn't totally believing the things as true, we do have a responsibility to stay aware of our thoughts and not act on them if they are harmful of course)

      Also have you ever done the Enneagram? Because a lot of what you are describing sounds like a typical ennegram 4. (I'm a 4w3) i don't want to type you as that's for you to figure out but you could be a 4w5 if you are more analytical and inward? Or maybe a 4w3 if you are more social and performing. 4s have both wings but most people have a stronger wing. Enneagram 3s are often seen as narcassists, because they crave validation through achievements, but they can also be very important to society in terms of innovation. Same with 4s in terms of creativity. So might be worth looking into your type. It helped me a lot. In terms of growth as it teaches you how to move away from the more toxic traits of your type and towards the more positive aspects that goes into type 1 if you are a 4. Type ones are all about organisation, rightness, justice and goodness. Type 1s can also have negative traits (you just said traits as I typed lol) they can move towards an unhealthy 4 when not at their best. I find it a fascinating system for self reflection and also very practical as a tool for growth.

    • @heart.school
      @heart.school 6 місяців тому

      yes I think that's true, that the broader hierarchies can end up rewarding those with the loudest voices / sharpest elbows / biggest entitlement, and that people then have to emulate those traits to get anywhere. just redone enneagram now because I forgot... @@jemmarosenthal and yes! I'm a 4, although it's giving me 4w5 and 4w3. I also found my birth chart quite helpful for understanding that there might be a reason I need to experience/articulate everything through my own work / personal processes - as I have 6 or 7 planet stellium in the first house so strong emphasis on self. I don't attach too much to these things but like the further self-reflection they invite just like any oracles or prompts really. Ennegram looks really legit though as a system and I'll be exploring it more. I'm impressed you were so accurately able to identify me! thanks for sharing that x x

    I struggle with this. I've not been as financially successful as some of my peers because of my reluctance to continually sell myself. I do wonder if some of my relations are right in their thinking that I should work a 9-5 job and do music "for fun like normal, responsible adults" instead of being "selfish and foolhardy" by trying to make a living doing what I love. I have wondered about some kind of communal living with other artists/musicians that could lower life's daily expenses to the point where paying my way would be much easier on what I currently bring in, rather than having to count every penny as I do at the moment. I don't have any answers but love the conversation!

    You’ve applied for so much! An incredible drive you have ❤

    Have you heard of Alison Stoner? She’s currently doing a series on Child Stars and how the industry affects the psychology in both the child star and the parents. She was in a lot of films as a kid, some that I watched, like Step up for example. And was in a Missy Elliott video as well. She’s a great communicator and I just thought you may want to check out her stuff. As she’s been sharing about her rejections as well. And how that impacted her as a child and young adult.

      Oo I don't think so.. although the name sounds familiar. Thanks, feels very relevant and I'll look into it 👀

    Most of my rejection things that I found hard was from the second rounds of stuff. So where I’ve got through something but then didn’t get the final thing. Those are hard. When it’s an immediate no and you don’t put time and heart and soul into it, then it’s easier to get over.

      Absolutely, like when you have to go the effort of more research, prep, interview etc.. knowing how close you were! It's really good practice though I guess

    Thanks so much for sharing this. ❤tbh this is the reason I’ve often just not applied for certain things in the past. I’ve had a fair few rejections but probably no where near as many as I could have if I had applied for more stuff! I tend to only apply if I feel fairly confident I’m going to get it! Or, if it takes not much time or if I don’t have much attachment to outcome. Which to be fair…not a bad strategy. Saves time and energy. And now I’ve done mostly stuff where I’m suited to. At the same time, maybe I’ve missed out on opportunities doing this. So I think I will be a bit braver in future, and at the same time, still using intuition on what I want to do.

    Thanks for this conversation. It makes so much sense around nuerodiversity and attention span, that's induced by technology as well. And the need for anchoring into the world. And the need for the container of the Heart.
