The Flying Optimist 2018

During spring 2018, students at Chalmers University of Technology have developed and built a foil rig for the Optimist Dinghy. It is universally mountable, and works with any standard one-design optimist hull. The rig is made from standard symmetrical aluminium profiles and stainless steel. Thanks to our sponsors Krona Boats and Sörman’s Fund who have made the project possible to realize.

I would try adding a V-shape to the foil, like the wings of a vulture, to help with automatic righting moment correction and stabilization.

I was looking to make one of those little boogie-board looking hydrofoil boards that you rock on to keep it going. or even one with a motor. I also own a El Toro which is pretty much the class of boat in the video. Definitely going to have to try this.
I was on a small team for a laser hydrofoil - it was 1985 and the foil didn’t work. It’s nice to see the optimist, laser and others successful. But I have yet to see anything more than a minute demoed. Of course America’s Cup rigs are awesomely!

I think if you started to tweak the Optimist to fly better, and kept going, you'd eventually end up with a Moth. And there are lots of videos of Moths up on their foils. Sometimes 5 or 10 at once. I don't know about Optimists, but it seems to me that Lasers are on the heavy side, at least for foiling. this was done so poorly. from what i saw there was no sustained flight so the title of "flying" is not deserved. i have seen better foiling designs from highschool students. there are multiple problems with the foils. First off the flat rectangular design would produce a lot of surface drag and vortexes would occur at the tips. Secondly, in all the papers i could find about this, you have failed to include anything about induced drag. Thirdly, the an area between where the centerboard and mainfoil connect there would be an area of turbulence that would effectively null lift. Lastly, the overall chord of both foils should have been reduced to minimize surface, induced drag and wave drag. this can be achieved by tapering the struts similarly to the ac75 rudder or the Moth Expocet foils and minimizing chord on the main foils. idk why i got so shook about this but as a moth designer i get a lil shook by this kinda stuff
If I was a moth designer and I spent 2 minutes of my life getting shitty with 2 students lifting an optimist out of the water, I would consider a change in profesion.
