How I build a simple worm farm using a single plastic container.
I made this worm farm using a single 18 gallon plastic container, some fly screen and some silicon glue.
Tools used: an electric drill with an 1/8" drill bit, 1/4" drill bit and a 1.5" hole saw attachment: a utility knife : a tape measure: a marker pen: piece of glass paper: a glue gun.

How I build a worm composting tower from recycled buckets for under 10 bucks.
Переглядів 57 тис.4 роки тому
In this video I will show you how I build a 3-tier worm composting tower from 3 x 5 gallon buckets and a few other materials. You can use composting worms and this system to transform some of your kitchen and garden waste into a 100% organic fertilizer for your plants, trees, and soil.

Does the top bucket rest on the bedding of the 2nd bucket?

Will the earthworms not get sliced when sliding over the netting on the sides of the buckets? And I see that your buckets are not snug since they're elevated with the rods. What prevents the earthworms from crawling up through those gaps? Finally, I see a lot of videos where spigots are used. The spigots are so close to the bottom of the bucket that I don't see how you can slide anything under it to catch the liquid assuming the bins are on the floor. As far as I can tell, you'd have to lift the entire setup OR disassemble the tiers to get that bucket to empty it out. I've never drilled holes in the bottom of my bin and find I have no excess liquid that requires being removed. This is not worm tea that you are collecting. It is leachate which is quite anaerobic and not a good thing to use in your garden. Worm tea is made by using the actual castings with water and aerating it. Your concept is good but I think it needs some tweaking.

I'm not trying to be rude but I personally think that the camera man/woman should use a tripod to stop all that movement. Great video though! Keep it up.

Elaborate and elegant and simple too! Quite the feat. I'll still buy the $4 beer brewer tap, but your bottle cap is very clever.

Do you have drawn plans some where? You should really publish an instruction kit. Sell it for $1.25 a pdf!

I love the idea of using the bottle caps. I might have to do that on my kiddie pools for the ducks to make for easier clean up.

I am grateful for your posting this video. I am in the southernmost state of México myself and recognized the manteca buckets. I am going to start my own vermicomposter following your advice.

Now that I know how to build a worm composting bucket system I can't wait to go to sleep tonight fot the knowledge of how to use it will come to me in my dreams.

Awesome tower, love your attention to reducing waste. did the bolt system hold up with continued age / use? what about using those plastic pucks from the drilling as washers?

I just found this. I like this better too than the tower, as you say. much simpler :) what do you set this tub or tote on you catch the leachate, if you get any? do you regulate the temperature around them if you do this outside? thank you!!!

I wonder if a 'step drill' type of bit might help in sizing the drain hole opening just right. I like what you did there for the tap! The fly screen circle for the lid could be cut an inch or two smaller in diameter to do the trimming before the screen is applied, saving a step. Does the leachate need air not to anaerobic and smell bad? It's seems maybe the bottom bucket could be simplified to a pan and tube and jug. But I like what you did! Really good! Thank you or sharing it! How do you keep them warm in winter or cool in summer?

Can I just throw my worm compost into my indoor plant soil? Or do I need to do anything to it?

Hi, wondering how did u harvest from the top bin? Does it automatically fall into the 2nd bin or is it too sticky.

Each bucket first and second from down has space to worms to escape at mouth of bucket, for that what to do?

what is the idea behind having 3 ribs around the top of the bucket?

    • @CuriousEarthMan
      @CuriousEarthMan 2 роки тому

I think you mean the ribs that strengthen the bucket by reinforcing the upper part, so less plastic is needed. I count four in total. That is how strength and rigidity are engineered into the container, if I understand your question.
