What is the best time to visit Manali for experiencing snowfall
The probability of snowfall is highest in Manali and its surrounding areas between December 15 and February 15. But as you know, you never know with the weather gods! In the winters of 2023, there was no snowfall in Manali in November, December and even in January. After a long wait, Manali finally received its first snowfall on January 31 and a few more spells in the first week of February. So, keep a good eye on the weather forecasts and plan your trip accordingly!
Which are the best places to visit in and around Manali for enjoying snowfall?
The best place to enjoy snowfall is.. It’s Manali only. Manali looks really amazing in the snow. You can also visit and stay in the nearby Old Manali and Vashisht villages for enjoying the snowfall. For a unique snow experience, you can also visit the nearby Palchan, Gulaba, Sethan villages and the Solang valley, which receive higher snowfall compared to Manali.
What about Atal Tunnel?
Atal tunnel is a good spot to witness snowfall. But you should not visit the Atal tunnel if it’s already snowing in Manali as you can get stranded in heavy snow. Kullu police also shuts the Manali-Atal tunnel highway in the event of heavy snowfall. And moreover, it’s also risky to drive in the snow.
Is Manali crowded in winters?
Yes. Manali gets really crowded towards the December-end. Holidayers start to throng Manali around Christmas and the town remains overcrowded till the New Year’s Eve. The tourist rush is huge and there are frequent traffic jams in and around Manali. Even the Atal tunnel gets choked with vehicles.
Will I get stuck in Manali if it snows?
Only if it snows heavily (three to four feet) and even then, not for more than a day. The highway remains mostly open almost up to Manali during snowfall and gets rarely shut for more than a day.
Is it okay to drive on snow in Manali?
You can drive if there is a light snowfall. But it’s not advisable to drive when snow settles down on the road and an icy layer is formed. In such a condition, the road becomes slippery and driving highly dangerous. And if it’s your first time in the snow, just don’t do it.
