      We are close to the Charlotte area. Honeysuckle Hill Bee Farm is located in Concord, NC. off of Hwy 49. Easy to find them on Google. 👍

    So I see you checkerboard the brood frame with fresh foundation. Does that help draw out comb faster and is it warm enough at night where you are for the brood to be checkerboard?

    • @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24
      @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24 19 днів тому

      Yes, that is exactly why we do it. But from what I learned, only do this when the nights don’t get too cold, and you have enough population to cover the brood during the cool nights to keep the brood warm. You don’t want chill brood. And yes, we’ve been warm enough for a few weeks now to do checkerboard patterns on the frames. We actually did our first successful splits back in early March.

    A couple of minor remarks (after the first hive): 1) I would empty out the new box before starting the operation. That will limit the time the hives are open. It will also limit the time the field workers return to an empty box. 2) You didn't remove the bur comb from all the frames (from memory from the second and forth, not from the third).

    Take it from someone who has killed bees in a move, you should release them as soon as you get them to the new location. Even at night. You had a chance for a BOGO with those swarm cells if you pulled a two framer!

    Nice work. A couple of suggestions. There is no need to smoke those 2 framers or any other small colony. Have it ready, just in case. Beetles do fly. Maybe get your helper some better fitting gloves. Good luck to yall. I subbed and look forward to watching yall grow.

    • @rtxhoneybees
      @rtxhoneybees 28 днів тому

      Just to clarify what I meant by not using smoke- When your colonies are small, going to them without smoke gives you the opportunity to observe their natural behavior. When you smoke them they go into sort of a panic mode. Take advantage of this while you can.

    With all of that capped brood I assume you will have to very soon transfer them to a five frame nuc. ?? What is the benefit of starting with a two frame nuc?

    • @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24
      @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24 Місяць тому

      Yes. They will more than likely be ready to move to a 5 frame NUC within about a week. The benefit to the 2 frame NUC gives the colony time to acclimate and establish the new colony. Bees tend to work harder and faster in tighter spaces, they will concentrate heavier on drawing out the comb and filling the 2 frames, but you do have to stay attentive to the 2 frame NUCs to not get away from you and swarm. Hence, why we will be moving them probably this week to 5 frame NUCs.

    did they kill the Queen when you put bees not from her box in there

    • @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24
      @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24 Місяць тому

      Great question! No, the ratio of bees from the amount that were already in the box versus the single frame of bees that gave them a population boost from the other hive were outnumbered. They accept their new home and they just go with it. If the numbers in the box would have been less, then yes there would have been a greater chance of them killing the new queen. I will be releasing a new video hopefully tomorrow, from this weekends check in on the new Queen and the 5 frame NUC.

    They will draw out that honey super faster if you take out the excluder. As soon as they get a softball sized area of comb, shake the bees into the bottom (to make sure the queen is not in the top) and put the excluder back on. Good Luck.

    Where do you get your bee equipment like the 2-frame nuc? I saw different handle cut-outs and the top cover looks like an imported kit. That wood spacer for feeder jars is dope, it saved me frustration feeding through the inner-cover.

      The 2-frame mating NUC was purchased from Dave at Barnyard Bees in Chatsworth, Georgia. I am also driving down south to GA, to pick up 2 new queens and 2 5 frame NUCs from him. Trying to keep good genetics in the apiary. I’ve bought a few of the 2 frame NUCs from him and they are solid good wood and sturdy. They make good quality products. I learned from him that you can use a 5 frame NUC feeder on top of the 2 frame NUC and it works just as well. The wood spacer on the 10 frame, I make myself. I’ll probably be making more of those since it worked out so well. One thing I’ve learned is sometimes you can get creative with your woodworking. I’m definitely open to any ideas from other beekeepers! 👍

      @@QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24I use Barnyard queens as grafting stock open mated with carni and a wild swarm I grafted. I make a 10 frame feeder box like barnyard has in his videos and throw a piece of R-11 insulation in it for the winter months. Just started making a winter wrap with a moving blanket wrapped with black plastic and secured with elastic paracord. Simple things make a difference.

    Just some advice, but if you want pure honey then you don’t put the queen excluder on and then a honey super on and then feed them sugar water. You will just have sugar water as honey and not real honey.

    • @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24
      @QueenAnnesBeesoftheCarolinas24 2 місяці тому

      Oh yeah! Most definitely! I won’t continue the sugar water. That was just because I’m just wanting a population boost. I watch Dave from Barnyard Bees channel a lot, and from what he’s talked about is to get a population boost is to power feed. I’ve also got Ultra Bee pollen feeders out for them. All of this to get big population boost. When the nectar flow starts, I definitely want pure honey, so I’ll cut off the sugar syrups. I definitely appreciate any suggestions and advice. 👍
