Fungus Gnats in Houseplants 🪴
Переглядів 104Рік тому
Whether you are starting seeds indoors or maintaining houseplants, sometimes tiny, flying visitors arrive. If they are fungus gnats, a two-pronged approach will quickly remove them and prevent damage to plants. As a follow-up, reduce fungus growth in your plant's soil by watering only when the soil dries out. Continually damp potting mix promotes fungus and fungus gnats.

Verbena: Is That a Bud? 🤔
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
Removing old flowers (deadheading) will keep annual plants focused on producing more blooms instead of seeds. Sometimes it's difficult to know the difference between a bud and a spent flower. This video shows you how to identify the two on a verbena plant.
Pruning Parsley ✂️

Got parsley? Remove the thick flower stems emerging from the center of the plant. They'll produce flowers and then seeds and your parsley won't provide you with the tasty leaves you love.

Im learning but thanks it help
Glad we could help!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you! Exactly what I needed to know.
Just making sure everyone knows: that's cilantro, not parsley
Actually it is Italian parsley and cutting off the flower stalks is good for both plants.
I've already removed all the little dome shaped dk brown "things". Also a few light colored small things I assumed were maybe eggs or young insects. I've had this problem for years and usually give up and throw the affected plant away. I will do as you suggested. I thank you so much for responding.
Glad to help!
Help! I'm battling scale on my orchids by removing with isopropyl alcohol, but still can't control. What insecticide can I use and where can I find?
Hi Ruth! I'm sorry you are having difficulty controlling the scale insects. What kind of orchid are you working with? Alcohol, though the darling of the internet, is not an appropriate substance to use in pest control. It does not work. It is not a pesticide. And it damages plant tissue. Besides first identifying the plant, we need to identify the kind of scale. Can you send me pictures? In the meantime, wash the scale off of the plant with a medium-strong stream of water and finger pressure. If that sounds too icky, wear gloves. I use a child's paint brush to remove the scale in the nooks and crannies of the leaves. Be gentle, you don't want to harm the tissue of the plant. After it dries, spray all surfaces with a horticultural or neem oil. I look forward to seeing the pictures. Without an accurate identification, we may not be doing enough! You can respond directly to me at orchidladycarol@gmail.com
At one time, everyone put a layer of rocks at the bottom of the pot for drainage. Is that really necessary? Thanks. 🌺
No, that is not a good idea. It simply restricts the root area. If you have drainage holes in the pot and good potting mix (do not use garden soil in pots) the drainage will be fine.
Thanks for the info!
Thanks. This Really helped me.💯
Thank you!
Moth balls are toxic to everything. People, kids, dogs, soil and water. They should be outlawed.
Umm pointless
What do you suggest using to cover the hole on the inside to keep the soil from washing out when watering?
We don't recommend covering the hole. If you have good quality potting mix, water it slowly and thoroughly the first time (until it runs out a little). It should then hold together enough to prevent much run out. If you are concerned about staining the area underneath, use a saucer - but empty it after every rain/watering!
I am from Bangladesh, how can I buy these?
I don't know what the situation is in Bangladesh as far as what garden centers carry, but there are many online sources for planters.
@@gardenspots For my roof gardening.
Why mine is growing to the sides not upwards?! Is this normal? How to make it grow upwards?
Not really sure what the problem is without a picture but lantana tends to be a sprawling grower - it grows both up and out. More direct sun can help it grow more upright
Very useful information. Thank u
Thanks for your videos. Very informative! Question: What pot would be best for forcing bulbs indoors, such as crocuses?
Any pot that is at least 5” deep to accommodate bulb and roots will work. The pot also must have drainage holes.
@@gardenspots Thanks again!!
My parsley grew enormously to the point that google Lens didn't recognize it. I cut it off, and it's so much I don't even know what to do with it.
Congratulations on your green thumb! You can always freeze parsley in a bag with a little olive oil and enjoy it over the winter, you can use a lot in a delicious chimichurri sauce (www.garden-spots.com/recipes). You can also share with neighbors and make some new friends!
Thanks, advice appreciated!
Oh my goodness, you have helped many times. Gladly subscribing to your channel. It is super informative!
I saw these at a local garden center and wondered if I needed them. Definitely going to go and pick them up. I have a couple of hibiscus plants that are directly on pavers. This will be perfect. Thanks for the tip!
Your video is exactly what I have been looking for as well. I have looked at tons of Lantana videos and have never had my questions answered until now! Thank you so very much. Now I know what I need to do.
Glad we could help!
just rethoricly, if I were to let it grow but prune down the flowers, forcing it to grow even more, to absurd heights (just because I found it amusing), but it would result in the rest of the leaves withering away; would the absurdly tall, but definetly dying plant be saveable? Or should I, ..I mean someone who might be stupid enough to do this, just start again from seed. It'S Very TALL. ..I imagine
Not really sure what you are saying is wrong with the plant :) Very tall but withered leaves? Herbs get leggy if you don't use them, but dead leaves sounds like a fertilizer issue or inconsistant watering. As for reviving now, it may be a bit late in the season. Go ahead and cut all the bad stems and see if it rebounds. If not, wait for spring to start new!
Thank you. Just want I was looking for. 🌻
Finally! A straight answer that I have been looking everywhere for!
Thanks been looking for the answer to this!!
I subscribed and I’m looking forward to more videos. Thanks Carrie.
Thanks for the tip
Thank you so much! I was doing it wrong. I forgot my geometry. 😂📐
My pot is 40 or 42 do I measuretoplargest number across?
Yes - the largest number will be the diameter. As you move the ruler back and forth you get smaller numbers when you are not directly across the center.
Thank you soo much. I learned it from you.
awesome. wish I knew this a few months ago lol. does this happen to basil or cilantro?
It does happen with cilantro. To keep basil going, you keep pinching back the flowers at the ends of the stems. We have a video on that, too!
Thank you!!! Finally an answer! Hahahahha I wondered if I could cut those! :)
Got a new little Lantana, Confetti type. I was wondering what was a bud and what was a spent flower head. Thanks for showing us, now I know what to do.
Thank you for the information. I started growing italian parsley. I will follow this guide.☺️
Thank you for the concise and informative video! This is exactly the information I was looking for.
Thank you very much for this info. It helped me a lot in order my pots.
Thank you! Finally the info I was looking for😊
Your video is perfect. However, it would have been even better if you had mentioned the small shiny green balls. What are they? Are they new flowers? Should they be removed? I don´t know what to do with them and my plants have them everywhere!!
Hi Michaela, Good point! The balls are lantana seeds. They start green and turn black as they mature. If you have the time we suggest you remove them. Not only will the plant put more energy into flower production than seed production but, in some climates (e.g., Florida), Lantana can become invasive.
Florezinhas delicadas!! boa tarde amiga!!!👍😘
Thx a lot!! Watched 5 useless videos to finally get this information. Thx again!
Thank you, I needed to know how to take care of them and produce more blooms.
Great info,I just learned something today .Thank you so much🏵💚
This is much better than putting cayenne pepper or other hot peppers around the plants...squirrels can be blinded if they get it in their eyes...
Very helpful!! Thank you!!
I have been looking for this information all over the internet and FINALLY came across your video! THANK YOU THANK YOU
Me too! I was going crazy searching.
Thank you! I'm new to lantana and my plants are not flowering. I've been trying to decide if what I was seeing on my plant were buds or spent flowers. This was so helpful!
Lantana is a great plant but the bud vs not-bud issue is baffling for a lot of gardeners!
Thank you! 😊
Exactly what I needed! Thanks for taking the time to record and post this clear, concise explanation.
Glad we could help!
Wow! Great tip! I’ve been watering wrong 😳
