Frame blending vs frame sampling vs optical flow in Adobe Premiere Pro
Переглядів 31 тис.3 роки тому
When your clip's frame rate is smaller than the sequence's frame rate, Adobe Premiere needs to interpret your footage to compensate for the missing frames. There are three different option from which you can choose. I created a little video to show them side by side. I hope this will help you chose the right setting for your videos edit.

For me, certain modes suit certain frame rates: I always use Frame Sampling for 24fps 8K reports in my native English. Then for my Tagalog edutainment content in 60fps 4K, I always go for Optical Flow. Then for 30fps 1080i60 content such as my planned Spanish sports channel (if only I were fluent enough), I'd rather go for Frame Blending after deinterlacing i60 or shooting in native p30... Those three modes help me perfectly achieve the look that I want (whether I want the 24fps 🎥 /25fps British look, the traditional 30fps Fil/Am 🧼 look or the most realistic 60fps look)

My observation is that frame blending actually fixes aliasing even in games when in motion but the down side is how blurry it is and how slow it makes everything look even tho you gain fps by using it.

When I make a Close- Up shot in Slow motion, the best one I believe is the Frame Sampling.

may camera (FUJIFILM X-A5) has 4k 15 pfs video recording. I hated it, but with ioptical flow now I guess, it will be useful.

I'm not sure... the problem is that all the bad details are more visible in 4k. There is no point using 60fps in 1080 because the difference is not big enougn to be noticed as it's not as sharp but with fast movement but 4K is so sharp that 30fps is often not enough for fast movements. It might help a bit though and with the AI being more and more used in these programs it's only the beginning of optical flow (now if you hit pause you see how horrible it can be ;) )

Optical Flow is not always be the best option for every situation, try to pause the video and you'll see the frame is clearer in Frame Sampling Interpolation, when the Frame Blending is the most blurry in this scenario. Regarding to this result, Frame Sampling is the wise option when you render the static frame such as 3D animation, Cartoon Movie, etc. You can choose Frame Sampling Interpolation too if your video source has the same Frame Rate as the sequence's frame rate and it will get better result than the others. In my opinion, try to avoid rendering the source that has different Frame Rate from the sequence's Frame Rate. Other than that, Optical Flow will get the best result when you render the slow motion effects, it'll get the smoothest motion compare to the others. And for Frame Blending, you can use it when you're using CGI effects in your video to minimize stiffness to your CGI motion rendering. Hope this help.

Thank you for the extra explanation. I also realised that optical flow can be really messy in lower quality video or when there is a lot of details. I personally use frame sampling most of the time

So optical flow is basically the best option

On this example indeed but sometimes it gives a strange result as it tries interpret the movement and recreate the missing frames inbetween.
