In this video I describe the history, architecture and art of this magnificent baroque church, a landmark of the city of Venice. Constructed in the 17th century on the orders of the Venetian Senate to give thanks for the city surviving the plage of 1630, the building is the masterpiece of architect Baldassare Longhena, who beat a host of competitors to win the most important building commission...
On the lion of Venice - a short history
Переглядів 7164 роки тому
In this video I trace the history of the lion as an astrological symbol, how it was absorbed into Judeo-Christian beliefs and became a symbol of the evangelist St Mark and how the city of Venice famously made St Mark their patron saint by stealing his body. I then look at the variety of ways the lion represents Venice in art, architecture and military images, right through to the modern age. En...

Dear Robert, Your video was simply amazing ! It helped me understand so much more about this “mythical” animal and its impact on the Judeo- Christian beliefs. Lions are impressive animals and it seems like in many cultures it represents power, strength, royalty and in some cases (for example Asia) it symbolises good luck and happiness. That is why when you explained how Italian and Venetian slowly “adopted” the lion as their symbol, I found it incredibly interesting and captivating to imagine how the “Lions” morphed artistically and culturally. These stylistic changes are proof of the cultural interaction between humans may it be violent or peaceful ( the Venetian merchants stole the Lion though). The winged lion of Venice reminds me of the very famous Egyptian Sphinx (who doesn’t have wings) and the Assyrian Sphinx (who does). As I studied Latin, Greek and Roman Antiquity Civilisation, I’ve encountered many myths describing the powerful beast. They always seemed to be a “trademark” or trophy for a deserving hero. Hercules kills the Lion of Nemea and takes his skin to make a cape ( he is so unfashionable ) and on the back of Pegasus, Bellerophon annihilates the Chimera ( I always thought that the Chimera was born out the “aedes” laziness to imagine a decent monster for our hero to fight). I never quite grasped the “lions” religious impact and how it shaped the early Catholic and Christian Venitian society . That is why when we visited Venice I wasn’t surprised to see golden lions guarding the city of Venice. That being said, I never expected the Lion of Venice to be such a core symbol in the foundation of Venetian History. I understood the meaning of “"Pax tibi Marce, evangelista meus. Hic requiescet corpus tuum." , but i didn’t think it was so important. Needless to say I can’t wait for you to post a new video ! Wish you all the best - A

Wow! Thank you so much for the compliment and the lengthy comment. It's so good to e able to engage with informed and interested viewers. I probably should have included a bit more on the use of the lion as a symbol in ancient societies - especially the 'king of the jungle' - strength/royalty connection. This is of course an important secondary meaning for the Venetians. On the Academy Travel UA-cam channel I have already published a video on Jacopo de' Barbari's 1500 map of Venice, and there's another one on a famous Bellini painting that's in production now and should be available in a week or so.
