What's that over white chicken with black spots called?
Westfälischer Totleger. See if that is the one you are asking about.
Ok thanks 🎉
Looks good, but I'm concerned about the rebar. Is that regular rebar, and if so how do you keep if from rusting out? Rebar is meant to be surrounded by concrete to protect from rusting. Is this specialized ground contact rebar?
Thank you! In hindsight I probably should have dipped the rebar in something. However, the amount of time it takes for rebar to corrode til failure is a very long time.
Would you happen to have a blue-print? Thanks
I didn't end up making any prints for this. If you have any dimensions or anything you have question on just lemme know!
How long were the Deadman ties? And how long were your rebar pins?
My Deadman ties were a little over 4 foot. And rebar was 2 foot long.
One stall for 5 chickens. 3 to 5 square feet of space per bird. Depending if they meat birds or egg layers and winter inside lots
Thak you very much. You helped a lit with this video! May i ask you, how do you manage to clean the poop? What are you using for cleaning? Thank you!❤
Thank you! The fake grass that I put in the boxes are removable so I just have to pull them out and shake them off!
I love this. I have a question though. I don't understand how you set it up so the eggs can roll down. Kindly explain this to me. I'm in Nigeria. Can I use woodshavings instead of the grass?
Hey! With the way it is built, the top is level and the bottom is sloped. You will need to mount the top to a flat surface and the eggs will roll down the slanted box. You could try woodshavings but I think that would prevent the eggs from rolling down the slope.
@@scrapyardchickens Thank you very much!
These are so toxic that CN rail had to modify handling them to hazmat levels of protection.
Looks incredible!
Thank you sir!
I love your little home. You have done such an amazing job.
Thank you! We had lots of help!
Looks awesome Mitchell! How long did it take you from start to finish?
Thank you! We bought it in May and moved in October!
The house looks amazing. Good job Michell!
Thank you!
Good job
Thank you
Amazing house! Congrats on the baby!!
Thank you!!
wow this is an amazing transformation!!
Thank you!
Amazing!!
Thanks!!
Made a 14 box bin!!
Awesome!
Does they go broody ?
Yes they certainly can
Will the eggs break from rolling down?
The way that I folded that padding back on itself I have not had any problems with eggs breaking.
woodenful design, i have question about the plywood. i saw the egg collection part is outside the chicken house without any cover. it was exposed to the sun and rain. will it broken after long time using?
Thank you, so my overhang from the roof does semi-protect it. I made sure to paint it though and after almost a year I have had no issues with it. Of course if this is a concern and you would rather have it inside the coop you can just turn it around. Just be sure to still cover the part the eggs roll to so the chickens can't get to the eggs. Good luck!
How much do you usually charge for this?
This was just a job I did for myself. I don't do this for a living so I can't give a good estimate.
11:51. Question. Did you put rebar behind the wall?
I put a 2 foot rebar through the back end of the deadman anchors.
Hey bro, really enjoyed this build. Thanks a lot for the video
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
I use a mix of hay and straw, ( less straw) , when I feed and water I take a potato fork and pull the good up and turn the bad down. Once the hay is either eaten or gone it starts to smell. It then goes to the mulch pit and a new heavy layer goes down. About 6 inch. Kinda like a barn in a movie. Twice a year. Works for me
Nice!
Yokohama price ?
Price ?
Bhai beautiful is ki price kia h
I only used deep litter method when I went on vacation for 2 weeks once! For daily basis, I use sand mixed with top soil and ashes for chicken coop and run. Less flies but I have to clean it out using cat littler scoop.
Interesting. Were the ashes used to prevent the flies?
We followed your plans only smaller to make four roll away nesting boxes for our new coop. Thank you so much!
Awesome! I hope it works well for yall!
Would love to see more of the house
Yea I definitely plan to put a video together. I wish I would have started recording videos during the renovation!
I really struggle with the "be patient" part
Yea... me too!
Great tips
Thank you!
My husband has like I think a 4 x 4 that separates the coop floor from underneath the roost and under the roost we have sand and I scoop it out with a kitty litter scoop. It is super easy. Anyway, whatever size it is the board is high enough that when they scratch around in the Pines shavings, they do not get into the sand underneath the roost. We do the deep litter method, and I would say it’s a least, a foot deep with litter, we use pine shavings. We only change them out twice a year. We always put diatomaceous earth all around the edges and mix some of it up into the pine shavings. It helps to keep away lice and mites. It’s important that you use the food grade diatomaceous earth only. And you do not want to breathe that or have it all stirred up when your chickens are in there you can read the back of the package. I just have a nail on the wall for a Walmart bag and a nail for the kitty litter scoop and I scoop it out and after the Walmart bag is about halfway full, I tie it and throw it in the trash.❤️🙏 I hope that helps. It never ever ever stinks.❤️🙏❤️🙏😉😉😉😉 I watch a Lady on UA-cam. The channel is called. Welcome to chickenlandia, she has a video called get rid of those pesky flies in your chicken coop for good. She talks about the litter in that video but her channel is excellent. I highly recommend.❤️🙏
Thank you for sharing! I had read about using the sand similar to kitty litter. That might be the way to go. I like having it separate from the pine shavings. Thanks!
@@scrapyardchickens you are welcome. And I would look up welcome to chicken Landia. That’s an amazing site for information about chickens on UA-cam. God bless you!❤️🙏. It must be the very course sand not the sand you would put in a kids sandbox.
Sample easy, straightforward. No fluff in the video
I don't use deep litter method, but am considering it. However, I do not believe you are doing it correctly. Rather than scraping out the two bags of litter that you put in, you put fresh litter on top of the old litter (until it builds to about 4"), and only do the full clean out every X amount of months (probably depends on season, but usually 3 months or more). What you seem to be doing is 'shallow litter', which yes, will get annoying because of the frequency. Also, get yourself a big decent hoe, will probably deal with the clean out far more efficiently.
I guess I should have clarified that my deep litter was specifically for under their roost. I would Layer fresh bedding under that area specifically. A hoe is a good idea! I'll give that a try!
i would recommend addind a 2 ft tieback to tie in to the deadmen
If you don’t have any embedment (concrete footings, rebar, piers) and also drainage, it isn’t a retaining wall. It’s basically a landscaping wall. Retaining walls have structural components necessary to actually retain.
it looks so good!!!
Thank you!
HORRIBLE IDEA. Railroad ties only last a couple of seasons. Then you will have to constantly replace them. This is hard to do when the wall has been backfilled.
I guess I was willing to try my luck! I'll have to give an update in a few years on how it's going!
So in a world where these railroad ties see thousands of tons a day for decades, some backfill is not going to do much harm very quickly. Just have to keep the backfill drained properly, which is necessary for any other material as well
Have this kind of wall installed in the 80s. Has held up very well
It will last about 30 years. I have to replace a very tall RR tie wall and rebating RR ties again or stack blocks.
@@jiml3922 Me as well. And if I had recoated them they'd have held up better.
This is always a BAD idea. Crossties are already old. They absolutely are going to rot out and you will be doing the wall all over again. Trust me, I learned this the hard way on my own and helping friends with theirs.
Guess ill have to give an update in a few years!
@@scrapyardchickens Right. BTW you did do a good job doing this wall. Not trying to be sarcastic here, but have you ever thought of why the railroad removes them. It's because they are deteriorated beyond their safety rating. Best wishes.
Fair enough. Thank you though!
Some might be bad with rot or insects in the middle but most will probably last several decades just sitting there. It's still a big chunk of hardwood. Just have to make sure the creosote wont be draining down into your ground water and contaminating your well.
@@Burnrate None of them will last decades. Guaranteed.
you could have easily installed the rebar using a Hilti Hammer drill set to hammer to pound them in FAST !
Yea I wish I woulda gotten me one of them!
@@scrapyardchickens you can always RENT one !
True!
Looks great
Thank you!
YOU DON'T HAVE A CLUE
great build!
Thanks!
How thick should the plywood be? Does it matter if it’s rough or not
I used 3/4 inch plywood. It doesn't matter too much as long as you sand down anything that might interfere with the hens and have some sort of mat down for them to set on. Good luck!
I cannot see the dimension on the back side of your layout. It looks like 14 3/4. Is that correct? Im trying to get the slope right.
It is 14.5 inches. Thanks!
Great video dude. Thanks.
Thank you!
We are working on building an 8' by 8' shed coop and want to copy your build for the nesting boxes. Do you have any additional advice before we get started?
Hey! I wish you luck on your build, that's exciting! For the Nesting boxes specifically the only thing I would add is once you know your chickens are okay with the material you line the box with I would glue it down so they can't scratch it out. Let me know if you have any questions! I do have full coop build videos as well if you need to reference those. Thanks for watching!
mine make a big mess and throw it all around the floor ! BRAWK BRAWWWWWWWWK ! 🐔
Yes that is frustrating! Luckily since they have to stick their head inside these feeders it makes little to no mess!
@@scrapyardchickens i use a 50 gallon drum with 3" 45 degree PVC pipe corners ... they have to stick their head up there but they toss it all about regardless was thinking of a feeder where they maybe have to step on it to open access to the food but there again they probably would throw it about .... but i still love them !
So the measurement across the bottom is 20" ?
That's correct!
@@scrapyardchickens thanks
So much better than a five gallon bucket
I agree!
