i don't think postmodern deconstruction or cynicism is a problem for ASOIAF, why should we have another 'and they lived happily ever after' fantasy ending? in fact, it was that part of his writing that I found most attractive because it is realistic in a way, and different to all other fantasy works. everything else you said I agree with, and this was a fantastic video.

I think at least in terms of subversion of traditional fantasy, it's possible to do what Martin's trying. Joe Abercrombie's 'First Law' series springs to mind as a comparison with a similar tone, similar theme, but ultimately less vindictive towards the tropes it subverts, and less ambitious in its subversion. Rather than trying to postmodernise himself into a new dimension where no ending can possibly suffice because things ending is a fantasy trope, Abercrombie stays firmly on the trail of high fantasy to satirize it. The noble youth takes the throne, the rustic warrior returns to his home, the slave is freed, the wise wizard passes back into mystery and legend, and each of these endings is turned delightfully on its head. Such a solution would be impossible for Martin I believe, even if he could find the path back to it from the wilderness he's wandered into, because to directly satirize the existing structure of fantasy would be to acknowledge the ultimately derivative nature of his work, the fact that to define himself by how much he's NOT copying Tolkien is ultimately no more creative than copying Tolkien.

It's always impressive to see the work of someone with deep insight, and the ability to explain it. We will watch your career with great interest. I saw your video on George RR Martin's work a few months back, not too long after it came out when I was on a binge of ASOIAF theory videos. I then proceeded to go though every other video on your channel and and bookmark it. As to this video, I must ask you - is there a way out? Can these tactics be reversed? I'm sure that any resemblances to government actions ongoing or historical are purely intentional. No-one likes journalists or politicians. I don't know if there is a Czech equivalent, but a general feeling in the English-speaking world is encapsulated by the old joke "How can you tell if a politician is lying? His lips are moving." Perhaps an alternate account, like Thomas Paine's "Common Sense", could eviscerate the establishment's approach. The simpler, the better. For instance, the establishment still talk about Gamer Gate, an event that occured ten years ago, since two competing narratives still exist, and thus the victory was not absolute. "Gamer Gate is about ethics in journalism" vs "The Gamer Gate Harrassment campaign".

    • @MagneMirare

Thanks! Yes, there is way out; fundamentally I believe that the human spirit has almost divine capability for change and inspiration. The first steps for me are educating myself on the problem - which is what I wanted to do with this video; you know like just take it in as cynically and with sort of materialistic causality. Once this knowledge is established, it is time for the free will to shine. Yes, we have the same jokes in CzechRep. but we have also this special thing - being conquered over and over by our neighbors and living under three fundamentally different authoritarian regimes just in last 100 years, we have this innate cynicism about politics; with this we are able to employ a societally wide gallows humour about the whole thing, which really helps from taking it too seriously - this is surprisingly freeing. The path forward I see is to create not political, but cultural paradigm - create your own virtuous narrative, one which is true to the moral principles you hold as sacred, and then it is just question of being stubborn as a mule about it. :D

I think the most sad part of this video is when I realised that people will naturally igbore the Systematic Pattern Analogy oresented. And instead will start to see similarities of the presented pattern in tegards to issues they themselves do not like in thwir own respective nations. Thus rather than a philosophical analogy, they see it as a direct critique of the issues they disagree with. What more, they even believe that you use the analogy of a carrot as a secret code for their X issue because you miggt get canceled otherwise As you probably noticed youself with the coments refering to "x issue in real life".

The point being that this is all unavoidable? That complex sociomaterial problems can only either be reduced to simple yes/no dichotomies or else bogged down to infinitely nuanced discussions that get nowhere while power keeps working its ways to divert the populace's attention from the real issues? I appreciate the critique, certainly, it is well made, but also quite cynical.

Agreed, it feels far too status quo for me. Leaving the Structures of Power in place that allowed the Abuse. You could take it to the AuthRight and go full on F, using it to crack down on any group ypu disagree with. Then weaponizing people against each group ypu used to achieve your new hegemony. Same with going the Tankie route, setting up some "equal" society where some people are more equal than others. But it still maintains the system that allowed for the shift. As I get older I keep seeing the inherent weaknesses in Vertical Structures.

    • @RainerRilke3
      @RainerRilke3 2 дні тому

@@Nezul Power can be exercised without the need for structures. Inequality is inevitable and no sane person would ever describe the goal of their worldview as "equality" (not even communists). Equality discourse is just a recent, mostly American, invention. I'd even say, quoting the video, that it's a textbook example of false dichotomy between two things that were never really on the table durint the time where shit was actually going down (aka before the 'dirty tactics' were applied). Personally I think the crux of the issue is that humanity has lost belief in their capacity for self-willing new modes of existence and taking control of their destiny. Centuries of naturalist fallacies have been at play in downsizing the creative human spirit, luring the masses into a dangerously comfortable state of permanent nihilistic, against the backdrop of determinism. We need to create or recover different ideas, ones that aren't as easily corruptible in their ambiguousness like 'vibe-based politics' or in their sheer abstractness like equality, ethnonationalism or nostalgic reactionarism. An ideological system that is malleable enough to withstand the test of time and changes, but without sacrificing its integrity or succumbing to the tide of unabashed relativism and nihilism.

I am a transgender woman, so my very existence is at the flashpoint of the "culture war", and all the way thru, I have been comparing carrot-eating to gender transition. I imagine that in Somveria, perhaps a wealthy, celebrated author of fantasy novels would have publicly proclaimed, "If those carrot-pushers had held sway when I was a little girl, then I probably would have been put on a steady diet of carrots as a child!" A deca-billionaire technology magnate would see his wife leave him for one of those dirty carrot-eaters, and perhaps his child would grow up to be a carrot-eater too, much to his dismay, and he would purchase a major social media platform and broadcast his opinion that allowing children to taste carrots is child abuse and that adult carrot-eaters are to be treated with suspicion. I imagine a minister preaching a firebrand sermon about how if those filthy carrot-eaters had their way, we would see our children have their skin color turn to a sickly orange color as social taboo and criminalization are desperately needed to keep those disgusting, addictive, and powerfully alluring carrots out of the bodies of Somveria as the devil schemes every day to turn Somveria into a nation of degenerates. Meanwhile, I just like to hang out with my friends and eat my carrots because they are essential to my well-being. I would also like to point out that in your story, the authorities sponsor a Carrot Pride march. I'm guessing that this is perhaps meant to be analogous to LGBT Pride. If so, the analogy is out of sync with history because as I understandm LGBT Pride has its roots in riots and protests against the authorities raiding LGBT venues and criminalizing and arresting LGBT people in the United States. Magne Mirare, your AI art is totally on point. Did you make it with Midjourney? You have my views. Fellow UA-camrs, roast me!

It is this mob mentality on all sides that I think we need to fight. The name for pride marches of course was inspired, but it is more of a caricature of modernity than any deep connection; it just stand for any thing people want to march for. No matter what opinion people want to display, they will be subverted by interest groups and power. The picture were made with dall-e :) Again, Thanks for the take.

If the modern man is so shackled by rationality that he has lost touch with the divine it is inevitable the results of this would become material and become what we now understand as consumerism, thus a return to an increased level of spirituality would materialize as a rejection of this mode of achieving satisfaction in favor of a new religion. I only say new religion since contemporary religions seem to be insufficient in satisfying the current spiritual needs of societies, proven with the popularity of secularism. Much like the first renaissance, i believe this spiritual renaissance will produce not only psychological effects, but new forms of art and science. If we really are living through the spiritual renaissance right now, i must say I'm disappointed, none of it seems very inclined to deepen our spirituality or is spiritual by itself.

These things exist only where they are selected for; egalitarianism exists in systems where individuals have many options and thus reduce any individual point of leverage. In a city, this is like having 10 possible jobs rather than only 1 or 2 jobs in town. No one employer has the same leverage, as opposed to a lord/vassal relationship where you have one ruler and no option to leave. Hiercharchy only exists where leverage can be amassed in concentrations. One central group can control and direct resources. For example a rural coal town where the employer there is both politically aswell as economically powerful. Ultimately it is an enviormental question and not a political one. The enviorment selects for egalitarian political movement, it is not the political movement that shapes the enviorment. The west seems to be continuing to urbanize, and so we should expect to see the continued growth of urban liberalism via enviormental selection. Until, as they will eventually, conditions select for something else.

Growing up, I was immersed in fundamentalist evangelical Christianity and also a certain flavor of atheism in which science is distorted to justify white male supremacy. In my own personal experience, both of these belief systems are spiritual poison that I am still suffering from having been exposed to decades ago. It sounds to me like you're describing atheism as being reactionary, defining itself in opposition to fundamentalism, which we both agree is an enemy to humanity (26:03) I think that atheism, as we know it, does not provide for humanity's spiritual needs, but many atheists reflexively push back against anything "spiritual" because fundamentalism is such a monster and we atheists suspect that any religion will ultimately entail fundamentalism. As an individual mind, I have been an atheist for decades, and I have been more and more curious about how we might meet human spiritual needs without fundamentalism or organized religion, and I think that if fundamentalism someday fades from the collective consciousness, you will see atheists more open to exploring new ideas. Thank you for making this thoughtful video. I will also add that your regression to the big bang, asking at what point consciousness might first arise, if it isn't a universal property of the universe, reminds me of an argument I once came across that human technology has always been a part of the collective human organism, and that the "internet", as we know it, is very much a living thing, and that the line between sentient versus non-sentient artificial intelligence is very much arbitrary.

Thank you for such developed commentary. In my thinking I originally come from a very atheistic (or at least incredibly agnostic) position - this is due to growing up in one of the most atheistic country in the world. Surprisingly it was precisely this "freedom from tradition" coupled with "need for spiritual answers" that brought me to my current stances. In some sense whatever I believe now, I arrived to through atheism and rational pondering. So basically I think this kind of spirituality is surprisingly a natural extension of atheism in some sense. I do not think fundamentalism is going anywhere by itself. What I hope for, is development of spiritual philosophies so truthful and so natural to human condition, that they can serve as the uniting goal of both atheists and fundamentalists. Replacing both, by answering needs posed by both sides.

    > The religious specialists.... were responsible for healing those who struggled mentally or spiritually with the task of living a life, often transforming them into new shamans in the process. "those who struggled mentally or spiritually with the task of living a life". I believe we are called "neurodivergent" these days.

Very well done! There is so much said about why people practice religion, but it is rare to come across material that truly gives a different way of seeing thing.

It is said that Martin set ot to rival Tolkien. But while I devored Tolkiens magnificent works as a kid I struggled to even get through Martins first book as an adult. I called it quits after that. Martins style of writing is lacking, his langage bland and his worldbuilding mediocre by comparison. Why anyone feels they more from him is beyond me.

It’s not unfinishable. It’s a complex story but we all know the beats. We all know the characters. You have battles about to jump 1:52 off at Winterfell and Mureen, and Oldtown. Whoever is left will gather at King’s landing and the wall and the results will leave us with - if not an end to the arcs as they exist now - at least an end to Wind’s and a platform to set up a true end in Dream.

Great video but I respectfully disagree. My take is ASOIAF shows how pointless posmodern “real politics” are. Everyone is fighting for the throne just for personal ambition but than enhance the real heros, common people trying to do good in a crazy world. The best example is Jon snow, who is going through a heroes journey almost by the book, to the point of being a chosen one who dies and resurects loosing part of himself only to defeat the white walkers and ended up in exile (if he ends up fighting on top of the wall with a flaming sword as he has dream) This may change with the remaining books (if they ever are finished) but i think if Martyn doesn’t go off rails ASOIAF will go in history as one of the greatest epic fantasies of all time. Cheers!

I kept thinking of Amos in the Jewish canon, who gets billed afterwards as a reformer, but his lashing out against poverty referenced nothing I can see in the doctrines before his time - no divine laws/commandments. It was a whole-cloth expansion of the moral index.

How would religions adapt to intelligent extraterrestrial life?

Well, my guess is, if we'd just know about them (without practical possibility of contact) or if they were just some simple single cell organism, then I think it would make a push toward certain "universality of life. This is just "being aware of them". How ever should contact arise this utterly depends on their behavior. Like if aliens would force me to build a pyramid, then I would probably just default to just worshipping them as gods, since it would make life easier :D. Their understanding of the universe, their philosophies and technologies would have need to be sort of adapted into human-like ethos or religion. I would suppose sufficiently advanced alien race is one which also cracked the mysteries of consciousness, life etc. These things are crucial in formulation of spirituality.
