How to supercharge your 4-cyl Tacoma/4-Runner (instructional video) with TRD / LCE supercharger
Переглядів 70 тис.4 роки тому
Step-by-step how to guide on supercharging your 4-cyl Tacoma/4-Runner/T100/Hilux/Surf for both 2.4 and 2.7 engines (2RZ-FE & 3RZ-FE) This took me 2 days to complete but I was taking my time. There are some variations between the early engines and later engines so things like power steering might be different. I'm pretty active on here so if you have any questions (even 6 years after I post this...

re-up, how to remove the lens from a motorcycles speedometer or other gauge
This is hands down how videos should be made thank you so much for the work you’ve put in the video you’ve helped a whole lot and it’s amazing seeing something more real showing the struggles and the time and how
Did it effect mpg? If so how bad
I get 15-17ish. How heavy your foot is also plays a big part in this haha
How about petrol consumption? Hard to maintain ?
I did that for my '97 2rz eng. (2.4l) ... LC Engineering provided the Magnuson blower that came with the orig. TRD pkg. But later I ported the head & modified cam, etc. It threw all of the electronics off - both high & low boost. But LC Engineering still helped & with their advice I got the (electronic/timing/mix/etc.) problem fixed thru a specialist in Manchester CT. It was worth it - - - Oh, added a header, ditched the cat. & widened the exhaust & got - Really - 20% better gas mileage.
Im looking for low end boost. What do you suggest?
Short tube header and skip breakfast
is the truck still alive? .
Indeed it is, always stay on top of regular oil changes and such
pretty cool vids .. what happened your not posting on youtube anymore ?
No time these days
Nice vid man! 👍 You've inspired me to buy a supercharger for my 02 Taco 2.7L i4, 4x4. Thanx for forewarning us on the pink top injectors and about exending the fuel filter line. 🙌👍 So far i have installed K&N-C.A.I, Doug Thorley header, light weight aluminum pulleys, and h.f exhaust. Combine those lil upgrades with a S.C, I'm hoping to get a significant increase in h.p! Thanx again for the killer vid! I hope we get to see more of your project upgrades ltr. 🫡
I have your exact truck and color. 1997 2.7 tacoma 4x4 and I've got 20k on the odo!!?? Bought it from a wealthy collector 2 weeks ago. How do you like this supercharger? Timmy C Arizona
Your truck must be pristine! I like the supercharger, it gives you the extra little bit of power that seems to be lacking when going up hills and such
@mister0ldschool Yes..pristine and flawless. Taking it to the coffee shop and dogpark in the morning. Not sure what I'm going to do with it! Lol
12 years later still usefull, Thank you
Glad I could help!
What readings did you get off your boost meter? Just finished same install.
About 3.5-3.8psi max
How many miles on your engine before u installed the supercharger
160k
do you have any update videos of the truck running? maybe some supercharger noises and boost gauge while its driving? i saw you have the scangauge as well, what was your average MPG before and what is it now? Awesome video thanks for posting. This makes me believe i could do a job like this with a few friends in a garage instead of needing to pay a shop and a tuner. I heard the low boost is most adaptable and safe- less pinging and stuff that i've read about the 8lbs system doing. have you had any pinging with this s/c? they say its usually low rpm and under load with boost. Also whats the purpose of keeping the EGR valve? emissions passing? Sorry for all the questions i have an 04 with the 2.4L 5 speed and i want it to have just a little boost, especially for crossing higher elevations and terrain.
- No video unfortunately and because I'm still using the factory intake system I think its got so many baffles in it that it muffles the supercharger noises. - I forget before but I'm getting 14-17mpg now. - Pinging happened when I would fill up with regular gas (though as long as I kept it under 50% throttle it wouldn't ping) put in high octane and no pinging! - EGR for emissions. - The 4psi kit is good for a little extra power and its nice that you don't have to do any tuning for it.
Not worth it, if the s/c kit comes with an intercooler like all the new s/c kits in the market the improvements would be pretty significant but without intercooling, over 5 lbs of boost heat soak becomes a big issue
I can use supercharge for a stock 3RZ engine?
Yes, mine is mostly stock, or at least was when I put it on
Is this street legal in California i mean I have a 2.4 4i and and i just want to have a little bit more of power
Yes, as long as you buy the smog legal one with the C.A.R.B. number
Are you running any tuning?
Nope, the low boost kit does not require any tuning.
Power boost barely noticeable but they sound cool
Can you do a putting a turbo on your Tacoma 3rz tutorial also if possible?
Will it fit a 95 Tacoma ? 🤔
It should, just make sure you check your intake manifold to see if its the 8 or 4 port
Long-term review, 🙏 please
These engines tend to experience rapid valve recession, burn valves, and crack heads as it is. I would hate to see how they do with a supercharger.
i have a 1997 2.4 2wd tacoma base model would the supercharger give it more power or do you think it would work on my truck?
It'll give you more power. Just make sure you buy the right one for your engine, the intake holes on them are shaped different depending on the year.
@@mister0ldschool does it need a tune?
@@adrianmontesdeoca1842 The low boost kit does not
Fuck yeah
Is there a certain brand for pink injectors?
Toyota(?) The factory injectors for these engines from 2003 (I think) and up were colored pink. My truck originally had brown ones.
I’m really wanting to get on of these for my 96. How has the car been holding up. Any issues with the supercharger or your truck. How’s the gas mileage. And how is the low boos, can you feel a good difference from before? And do you thing the truck could handle the high boost version? Thank you🙏🙏
yeah whats ur mpg ? im getting 15 in the city rn in mine, I would imagine 12mpg in the city if I lowboost lol
Its holding up just fine, the only issue I had was some oil building up on one of the bow off valve vacuum lines and having to put a clamp on it so it wouldn't slide off. I lost about 2-3 MPG combined. Yes there is a difference, not super significant but its noticeable especially when your going up a hill. These engines are pretty robust so I'm sure it could handle more boost, you just have to get the ECU tune to support the more boost.
@@yotagang3705 Before I was getting about 17 and now I'm getting 15
@@mister0ldschool thts good i get 15 rn in the city 3rz automatic reg cab 4x4
Was it hard to figure out the vacuum lines?
no, most of the things vacuum lines are connected to are still kept and just bolted to the supercharger
I keep trying to find one of these kits used because I plan to swap to a v6 eventually maybe in 5 years. It’s hard to find a used kit. Great video!
So I have a 2022 tacoma base model, 4cyl, I'm not sure if it is a 2rz or 3rz, and I don't know how to check, and if there is any kits that I can install to get mo powa!
You have a 2TR-FE (based on what wikipedia says) I'm not familiar with that engine so I'm not sure what mo powa babeh option there are
Same ecu?
Great video. I have the 99 version of your truck. You notice any clutch slipping under power with a heavier load and could you safely put a smaller pulley on the super charger for a couple extra psi boost? And no other hidden costs? Parts or fabrication that wasn’t filmed?
No clutch slippage, I've towed a camper trailer a few times with no issues. Smaller pulley, I don't know. This is the low boost kit that the stock ECU can work with on its own, any more PSI and I imagine you'll have to get a tune for it to work right, or the 5th injector mod. Hidden costs are that your MPG will go down and superchargers have their own oil you have to change too. Also to get the most out of it get the pink fuel injectors that came on the later Tacoma's. They aren't necessary but they help.
@@mister0ldschool cool thanks. This looks like the best way to get that bit extra.
Man the Aussies had it so much better our fuel filter is on the wheel arch from factory
It's not a Tacoma though, it's a HiLux, right? The Tacoma was designed in the US, and the fuel filter kinda proves it. :) I relocated mine, and it sits right next to the EGR modulator.

Is that high boost or low?
I’ve been thinking about this for a while to spin 35s easier
@@cooperbrick7468 Its low boost, it would probably help out a bit with the bigger wheels but i wouldn't expect anything crazy
Hey there, thanks for this amazing video well detailed installation. I planning on supercharging my 2008 tacoma base model and I am a bit worried about the ports on the manifold. I believe the second generation have 4 ports and the 1st generation have 8. Is there anything mod to do there?
Go out and look at you manifold on the truck now. If it looks like two tubes going into the head then its an 8 port, if its just an oval going into the head its a 4 port. If you google "tacoma 8 port vs 4 port" the first and 6th pictures are exactly what your looking for.
Will this fit ecoboost mustang
It will not
@@mister0ldschool have any suggestions on supercharger for 4cyl ecoboost
@@ggisold I'm not familiar with Ford Eco boost engines or their aftermarket support, sorry.

this is Dec19/21..talked to LCE guys recently they said you can't use an electric cooling fan with this supercharger but watching your vid doesn't look like it would be an issue as your original fan looks like it takes up more room.Any comment ?
I put the LCE electric fans on my truck maybe a month after putting the supercharger on, they fit no problem, not sure why they said the fans wouldnt fit
Wow back that up with header exhaust system performance fuel injector and larger throttle body and advanced computer chip and smog legal intake system hello here we go .
Gas mileage difference?
lost about 4mpg combined
How about a 1 year update? How's it's running? Any problems? Pros and Cons?
Runs good, the only issue I came across was a vacuum hose that's under the supercharger got all oily and slipped off. My guess is because I don't have an oil catch can some oil might pool in the bottom of the supercharger. fixed it by just putting on a tighter hose. Also I stripped one of the throttle body holes, since the supercharger is all aluminum and the throttle body bolts were steel, well I stripped a hole, going to have to Heli coil it. Drivability is fine, maintenance is fine, I should probably change the oil in the supercharger soon. Pros: Moar powa babeh!!! Cons: You need to find high octane fuel or else you will start knocking, sometimes when traveling I cant find the good stuff and have to baby it with regular gas until I fill up with the good stuff again. This is the biggest con.
I'm a noob here. how did you get it tuned before even turning on the engine? thanks
We wanted to hear the whine guy!
Give us an update on this!
Due to a longer daily commute and a lack of high quality gasoline where I currently live I have taken the supercharger off. My truck is slow again :( but at least its not detonating anymore.
@@mister0ldschool would you like to sell it? Lol im in northern California
@@noir-kx8ku Sorry, ill be moving in the next couple years and ill put it back on then
Hey bro do you know if the sc increased your idle at a redlight? cus ik the air conditioner on will increase idle. Thx
It did not for me
Is it recommended to get the truck tuned after adding the super charger?
The low boost kit does not need to be tuned but it would help if you did.
Hello i was wondering was your supercharger able to hit 4psi right away or did it have to recalibrate in order to hit 4 psi?
Mine hit 4psi right off the bat.
I just put the low boost sc on my 2001 taco and it helped so much I can now increase speeds on the highway doing 70 in overdrive, whereas before it would need to double downshift to increase speed at all. For me it was definitely worth the money and the sound is amazing
Also thanks old school for the video without it I would’ve gotten so lost with the instructions:)
@@blakehyslop2605 I'm glad you found this video useful :) I was hoping someone would haha
How has the SC effected your fuel economy?
Roughly how much more power did you get? I bought an 01 Tacoma with the 2.4 and it’s horrible with power. I might find a 2.7 and swap it out.
According to my butt dyno I got at least another 20hp. Why not go all the way and swap in the v6?
