The *PINNACLE* of AMERICAN MADE Pocket Watches
I am too caveman to understand this issue, nor identify it.
I found it. Real pain in the butt.
Well something in the train is nackered 😬 I'd also guess pallet fork lost a jewel or two, or broken a pivot. But in any case, it can't be healthy for the movement to spin it like that, right?
It isn’t the best no. I removed the escapement to do this. I was checking the freedom of the train with the watch fully intact to see if there was an issue. I was at my wits end to find the issue. It was a loose center wheel hole jewel in the dial up position.
Damaged pallet fork? 🤔🤔
No I took the escapement out to test the trains freedom.
What model is this pocket watch?
I believe Elgin 345
@TimelyMatter Thank you for replying!!!
Nice one mate, thanks for sharing your work!
I appreciate you! Thanks
What model is this
Elgin grade 345
Big thanks for the tutorial. Time to try and wish me luck. Greeting from Indonesia.
You’re welcome! Thank you!
i am a bit late to the party, however, thank you so much. I am just about to restore / fix almost exactly the same movement. Gosh I would have made a mess without this input. It will be my first Fusee repair. again - thanks.
Good luck! I’m still learning with these fusees! It never ends! Thanks
Cheer~~~a person who makes and repairs watches and clocks.😊
Yeah:)
Now do it drunk. Its much more fun
Been there. Fun time lol
@TimelyMatter stabbed my thumb with the screwdriver doing just that. Those horotech screwdrivers are damm sharp. Blead all over my 1910 omega goliath. Took ages to get the blood out of the jewels.
Those screws were probably just not tightened properly. I was working on a similar Omega a few years ago and when I took the rotor off, the gear train bridge popped off breaking the escape wheel pivot! Last service didn't tighten all the screws after lining up the gears.
I’m going to have to agree with you! It’s a shame because now the movement has more scratches on it. From the rotor wobbling around.
Thanks! I'll be doing this shortly for my first time on my first pocket watch service/fix.
That’s awesome! It’s important!
Is there a full video on an Atmos?
Working on it! Thanks
I'm happy to say I'm a proud owner of two railroad grade pocket watches. One is a 1913 Hamilton, and the other one is a 1942 Waltham. My great-grandfather, who owned the 1913 Hamilton, was a conductor. So It's cool that the watch I now own has mostly likely been all over the U.S.
That’s amazing! I’m a big fan of American made pocket watches
I have a Hamilton Railway Special 992-B. Mid '40s. I wore it for the majority of my time as a locomotive engineer for CR and the NS. There was still a jeweler in town that services them. His grandfather was the watch inspector for the railroad.
That’s awesome. It’s nice to hear from someone that actually used them for their real purpose! Thanks!
Good stuff
Thanks! Hoping for more time to work on videos.
I can get the beat error down to 0.1ms in one position, but as soon as I tilt the movement to another position, the beat error goes off the chart. And the rate as well. I suspect there is something completely off with my movement..
It most likely that the hairspring isn’t perfectly centered. Different positions will affect how the hairspring hangs. Thus moving where the balance will settle. Moving the roller jewel. But that’s just a guess! Thanks for the comment:)
@@TimelyMatter That is most likely the case. There was a screw that got lodged into the hairspring section, and I realized something was wrong because it had stopped ticking. When I took it out the rate was all over the place, and that is why I was trying to regulate it. I believe the hairspring is either bent or off centered.
Thank you for everything ok have 3235 clone movement winds watch but second hand won't turn someone said escape wheel is broken where can I fix or can I do it myself all I know is how to open watch that is all thank you
I would bring it to a professional. Unless you have the proper tools. Then try it out!

First class. Greetings from The Netherlands.
Thank you!
I like the part when movement is jumping on that "Magna-Flux".......
The thrill of the job.
I wish you can talk.

Shi.. happens, lesson learned and now move on.
:)
Unusual mainspring end! I dealt with quite similar fusee watches (Jos Johnson, Beesley, etc) , but they all had a regular hole end mainsprings. Perhaps it would be possible to cut a hook out of a piece of metal, punch a hole in the new mainspring and rivet it there.
That would have been the proper fix. Thanks!
You let the beat error go uncorrected.
Thank you!
Nice work!!
Thanks!
My heart stopped when you let down the mainspring like that!
Yeah haha my mistake! Good thing there is a safety pinion!
How did you source all those extra parts? That is very impressive
I have parts and eBay is an amazing tool! Thanks.
Good lord, that storage locker is like stepping into Willy Wonkas chocolate factory. I hope you're not hording all the South Bend parts left lol.
Hey there! Wouldn't it be better to remove the wheel and hairspring from the balance cock, make the adjustment and then install it again? I see many chances to make very bad mistakes in a regular sized watch or smaller movement. Thoughts? Btw I've going to watchmaking school since march so I'm by no means an expert, just wanted to ask you, thanks for sharing!
That would definitely be the best way to do it! But you have to adjust it many many times, because it is such a precise adjustment. It would just take longer doing it that way. “The proper way”
Thanks! Super helpful video. I just did an Elgin 313 restoration, and everything is running correctly, except that the balance is really slow, similar to what I was seeing at the beginning of your video. I'll try adjusting the beat error, and see if I can't get it to speed up and run accurately.
I hope you can! Balance work is very tedious. Good luck!
I had - I think it was a Timex - that looked just like that. Lasted for years & sold it later with my accumulated 'collection." I haven't had a pocket watch since, but have a retirement Charles Hubert railroad Watch #3756-GRR on the way!
I would suggest getting a nice pocket watch! Get a Hamilton 992b! Can’t go wrong!
@@TimelyMatter Thanks. Since I retired I no longer wear a watch. Who cares what time it is? I know it's always later than I think I suppose the Charles Hubert will do for the rare occasions.
I like this one
Thanks!
whatif i hypothelticly spilled a whole jar of theorteical spahghettios in my watch wat do i do to get the fake spghattii out askin 4 friend thanks
I would keep them in. It would enhance the overall efficiency of the watch.
I have I 1913,0mega pocket watch with beat error of 4.8 and amp of 205! I’m an omega vintage wristwatch person but never serviced pocket watches… what’s an acceptable amp& beat error.. I’m a bit hesitant to play with such an attractive piece? Where are you located..
I’d be happy to look at it for you! Thank you for the email!
With hardware catalogs
Agreed!!!!
Bummerama, dude
:)
@@TimelyMatter I got overly confident when cleaning the dial of my late dad’s Bulova. Cleaning with water and a soft paint brush removed the minute marks and probably sent a couple of micrograms of radium down the drain.
So handsome wow! 😮
:)
im pretty sure no one thinks that, and if they do, they need help 💀
I wish that was true:)
I guarantee no one thought that
You would be surprised:)
Apologize with ukulele and ugly crying rn!
Gotcha! Video coming soon! Haha
As someone who loves pocket watches... This... Hurts...
