This song replaces 'Now that I've seen her' from the previous Miss Saigon. I don't usually enjoy new songs in revival but this is an exception. I do not own the song. Just putting up so that everyone can listen to this brilliant piece.

    This is very well done, but get the original cast album from the Broadway play to really hear some great renditions of all the songs in this show......

    How this film isn't even on the film registry is beyond me. Sure it's not as famous as Sound of Music, Mary Poppins & Wizard of Oz as musicals but it is one of the best musical films of all time.

    Help me Am I fooling myself If I've already lost you? Nothing's changed, you're still mine, We can try to ignore this. But if she has come back in your life, Well then maybe, you were never mine. And yet my heart cries maybe, It's a trick, it's a lie, She's just trying to use you But I looked in her eyes: It could kill her to lose you, And maybe, just maybe you need her too. Back when we met, You were broken and wild, And I held you at night, and I ached when you cried. But despite what we lacked, We tried staying on track, no regret, yet, Maybe it was fate That suddenly brought her back to you, And your love was true love, Before I even knew you, If the life of your dreams, Is the life she is giving, Should I be the one to stop your dream from living? If you're hers, then be hers, And forget about me now. I've been blind for so long, That perhaps I can see now, And maybe, Just maybe, I'll find the strength I need to set you free now, I'll be strong, I'll stand firm, So my tears won't betray me, But my heart might just break, If what may be, may be.

    This clip is a tribute to the sheer unsung artistry and brilliance of vocalist Marni Nixon. She was so adaptable that she could make herself sound believably like Deborah Kerr, Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood and probably many others. It was Hollywood procedure at the time to keep this vocal dubbing very secret and uncredited. Neither Marni nor the likes of Bill Lee who dubbed Christopher Plummer in The Sound Of Music were ever formally credited for their great work.

      I wonder what time this movie was supposed to take place in. I was born in ‘56, the year this movie was made, but the values in the movie carried over for years. I felt peace and comfort, and there was a sweetness and harmony to life. We were safer then, we have to watch out much more now. I am just telling you what I experienced. There were still things to deal with, but they were more average kinds of things. There was beauty in the world…with people and many things. People can choose what they desire to be, but many things do affect us. We still can choose. And nature is still beautiful, that always will be. However, it seems pretty upset in places now. I am not sure at what age this movie was to portray, but I do remember the values as being the same as mine!! I never had many big challenges until I went to college. Then my life had its ups and downs, and I ended up having huge trials!! So it is very refreshing to come back to this!!

    I was “forced” to watch this in high school in choir class. It was the end of the year and there were still a good few days left, but what was my choir teacher going to do with them? I knew my mom loves this movie so I paid extra close attention but honestly I didn’t need to, it’s so good I found myself sucked in almost immediately. Very glad my teacher made me watch it

    Are rhese Gershwin’s lyrics.?

    • @beforeourveryeyes
      @beforeourveryeyes 7 місяців тому

      Yes. There are at least three versions of lyrics for the verse and partially different lyrics for the choruses. Sarah Vaughan and Frances Gershwin do alternate versions in videos available here on UA-cam. Actually. Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald both do two different versions in different recordings. I don't know if different characters sang the song in the original show; Ira was known for writing lots of lyrics . You might know his lyrics for "I Can't Get started" by Vernon Duke. or "Could You Use Me" with George, from Girl Crazy Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney performed it the film version. You can probably find it here.

    I grew up observantly Jewish; the story of FotR is the exact story of both sides of my family, who immigrated to Boston from Russian/Polish/Lithuanian shtetls in 1908, so when I say I've grown up with "Fiddler" basically tattooed on my brain, believe me. Every syllable, memorized. And yet. The older I get, the more this song takes on greater meaning, and depth, and just devastates me. As a kid, I wasn't focused on Tevye and Golde...as a middle aged woman, I watch this scene, weeping, and see that this song is an entire story, and in the movie, gorgeously acted. Here's Tevye, watching his daughters live out a new culture with new values he never expected to witness, and he realizes he's NEVER asked his wife if she loves him. He's never even considered doing so. It never occurred to him that it was something he should wonder about. More than that, he realizes how much he wants and needs the answer to be YES. And we watch him, in this song, reveal his vulnerability -- the boisterous, acerbic, jovial Tevye goes away, and he gets more and more earnest and authentic in his need for Golde to take this conversation seriously...and then his relief and joy at her answer...you can see how badly he needed to hear that yes, she loves him. (But, you know, he can't get too mushy, so...he contains his warmth and emotion to that beautiful smile and the adorable little shoulder bump.) And for Golde's part, she's SO guarded, SO pragmatic, SO committed to holding the household together with an iron grip...it's SO hard for her to let down that titanium exterior...and then we watch her surprise at her own answer - at her own realization that yes, all this time, everything she's been doing for 25 years and five daughters and this crazy, loud, imperfectly human man...has been about love after all. It's so achingly real -- the way real people in desperately hard life circumstances can only allow themselves so much softness before they need to buck up again -- but this is that moment. The softest it gets, for this resilient couple. A phenomenal scene.
