ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - Paul B & family
ALS ice bucket challenge by Paul B. Son says "I got a little wet" in the saddest voice ever...poor...little...man. Yep, there was ice in there and it was a cold day. My great grandmother passed away from ALS so this disease has a special significance to me and my family. Watered the plants.

2014 R1200GS afternoon drive
Переглядів 1 тис.10 років тому
Finally got my camera mounted to the bike and took an afternoon drive with the 2014 r1200gs. There is still snow around so I had to watch out for ice and water on the road. There was also some spots with a build-up of salt so I tried to avoid those areas. Felt good to get back on it after a long Winter!

2014 BMW R1200GS Walkaround with Navigator V
Переглядів 76 тис.11 років тому
New 2014 BMW R1200GS enduro motorcycle walkaround to show off a couple of the features and options on the bike. Sorry for the ums and ahs...its a new bike and it was early in the morning and I hadn't had my coffee yet. I start it up around the 6 or 7 minute mark. Stuff I talk about and show:LED headlight and signals, fog lights, GPS (Navigator V) with thumbwheel, ASC and ride modes, saddlebags,...
hi i have navigator 5 and when i plug it to 2016 bmw r 1200 rt, my motorcycle option does not work. navigator 5 in the engine may also be caused in the current state.
The Bmw navigator vi which is in fact a Garmin unit is a total piece of crap. It’s the most expensive of all GPS systems and a total disaster in every way imaginable. I threw mine in the trash after 3 days. 840 euro is not worth getting high blood pressure and an ulcer from the stress of trying to get this overpriced brick to do what you want. So do yourself a favor and buy Tom Tom or use an app on your smartphone. If on the other hand you like to read manuals and search internet fora for days instead of riding your motorbike, the navigator is the ideal product for you. If you don’t take into account the almost unreadable screen of course. Personally, I’m more into Homer’s way of thinking: ua-cam.com/video/1G8XQA9QFS0/v-deo.html
Nice bike :) I have the same year and colour, I think I've put on about 35000 :)
Ah... summer time fun!
Hi Paul Baker. I have a question to you. Has GS got a button to control the headlights? Has it a sensor for night or can you turn on the headlights too at day time? You make me happy if you answer man :)
+Alper Tuna SESVER There is a switch for high beams yes, and you can flick it for passing. During the day you can turn them on...I haven fog lights as well and turn those on during the day as well. No sensor (it doesn't turn on or off automatically).
Hi Paul - Have you worked out how to execute a route on the Nav V? I can input a route OK but when I go to follow it (by following from the front screen "Apps" then "Trip Planner" then select my route and press "Go") the Nav V asks me to "select next destination" - and presents me with all my waypoints - If I select the end one it routes me there not via my other waypoints, if I select the first way point it says "destination reached" when I get there and I have to restart the whole exercise. The manual is no help! Any ideas how you execute a planned route that takes you via all your waypoints and to the final one without stopping?? Thanks a mill....this thing is driving me nuts!
+TheMissendenFlyer If you select an individual waypoint via trip planner it should take you via the other waypoints (did you try clicking the 'routes' button which should give you options? I'll take a look to see if the GPS takes directly to the waypoint without factoring in the other waypoints...that seems annoying if you have to break up a trip into sections.
+pcrb1979 I'll check that out - thanks Paul....
When it asks to "select next destination" (usually if you've used "where I am now" as the start location) you just need to select the next waypoint, assuming this isn't also the destination. The nav will then take you to that waypoint and thence via the rest to your destination. I use trip planner a lot as you can review a route and tweak it by inserting waypoints if needed to get the desired routing; Faster Time always uses Dual carriageways etc. and Curvy Roads uses every spurious bit of curvy tarmac, so neither are ideal. One useful Tom Tom feature I've not found on the Nav V is the next petrol station on the planned route, very useful especially abroad when a few miles detour to the next station could take a lot of time.
Hey Paul... well I decided not to get the GS. I've gone over to the Ducati camp. Have an order in for a 2015 Multistrada S. Should arrive in a few weeks. This 'waiting' has been Brutal... Enjoy the upcoming riding season! Cheers...
Lastima que este en ingles y no poder entender, las explicación de esta maquina que es, wonderfull
Hey Paul... Just touching base to see how everything is going with the GS... Any major issues? Have read on r1200gs.info that some GS's experience water pump leaks. Any sign of cooolant issues with your GS? How many clicks do you have now? Still looking to purchase next spring. Had it narrowed down to Ducati, Triumph and BMW. The Ducati does not have factory cruise control, which I absolutely want. So now down to two bikes... Triumph is a tad old school in regards to the suspension settings and I really don't like the flared fuel tank. So... the BMW R1200 GS is the clear winner IMO. Have heard that BMW Motorrad uses their customers as their method of Quality Control though. Have also heard that BMW has depedability issues. Makes one a little leary! Well... I'll try anything once. I really like the GS. BMW... please don't disappoint!
Hey there, no water pump leaks for my particular bike although I'll keep a closer eye on that particular area. I just recently inspected all the clamps and hoses and had the 2nd service. All seemed fine.
***** That's good to hear. Yeah, just keep an eye on it. If there is an issue with the water pump/seals, the coolant will leak out a weep hole at the front of the crankcase. I see you have a Wolf BMW emblem on your GS. Do you have it serviced there? If so, how are their prices? I hear Wolf has the best service rates around. How much did you pay for your first two servicings if you don't mind me asking? Do you get treated well at Wolf? I'm close to Budd's BMW. Will probably purchase my '15 GS there. I hear their service rates are not the cheapest. Some people have reported that they get treated badly at Budd's. Just hearsay though. Don't quote me on that... John
+GrandpaBambu Wolf BMW has been great. Off the top of my head their prices seemed pretty reasonable. They'll tell you how much the first few maintenance visits will cost you. I did an extra oil change after 500km but it's not needed. Much of the cost obviously depends on how much you use the bike...so for me it's 1 oil change per year...valves at 10,000km. Haven't had to get brakes done yet and the tires look like they have another year left in them so i'll probably get to 18,000-20,000km on them. No issues with the bike after 3 seasons except a GPS mount issue (wouldn't always sync with the bike). Clutch/gearbox is a lot smoother now so it seems there is a break-in period for that. Budd's is actually a little closer for me but I haven't had any reason to switch. The people at Wolf's are responsive (via email which is nice) and their schedule works with mine...so if service is a deciding factor I've had a great experience at Wolfs.
+pcrb1979: Hey Paul... thanks for the update. Glad to hear all is well. Wow, 10,000km for valves? It's 30,000km for the Multistrada. I've had a few electrical issues with the MTS. One still has not been corrected. Will have to put some pressure on the Dlr to get it put right. Other than that, the Duc is awesome! I have some vids on my channel if you would like to have a look. Went for a ride Monday. My neck got a tad cold though. Purchased a balaclava yesterday. If it is dry today, I'm going for another ride to see how the balaclava performs... This is awesome riding into December!!! Are you still riding your GS? Or have you tucked her away for the winter?
Paul, I was down at the BMW shop and rode the 2013 GS1200. I know 2014 is practically a new model year for this bike. I'm curious why you bought new, but also on a broader scale why BMW? Each day is different for me...I follow the KTM thread on advrider, then the BMW thread. Back and forth back and forth! Of course the dealer is telling me 'll be happy with a BMW, but I'd like to hear (or see another video?) why you chose this bike. TIA!
For me the decision was easy because the BMW r1200gs has linked the front and rear brakes with the front (hand) brake lever. The brake pedal just controls the rear brakes. I have what's known as drop foot so using the pedal is difficult so i need full braking power with the hand lever. BMW is actually the only bike manufacturer that I know of that has this particular braking setup - most do partial front, partial rear. Essentially my decision was made for me. That being said, BMW makes a solid bike and I have been very happy with how this one rides and handles. I've taken it on the occasional dirt and have wished for knobbies tires when doing so. For long distance and normal back roads, this is a great bike.
Paul... the test ride was awesome! Was on a '14 GS, and '14 GSA. I found the shifting to be 'very' smooth. No clunking at all... The only issue was finding neutral. It took a bit of messing about with the shifter to find neutral. Other than that, I was very impressed. First experience with e-throttle... Instant response... caught me off guard a few times. However, nothing that I couldn't handle... Just a wee learning curve. No off-roading... no report in that regard. Sorry... John - Brampton, ON

Thanks for the update, I might contact BMW to see if I can get on a demo of the '15 - the power shifting sounds cool and I'd like to see how well that works. I have the same issue as you with finding neutral. It takes a very light touch to get there.
Love it...Liam: "I got a little wet..." Ah kids.
Very nice! Good work.
that is one nice looking bike
Great bike!
So there isn't a setting for 2 plus luggage??? John - Brampton, ON
There is. Here are the ASC settings: 1 person, 1 person + luggage, 2 person, 2 person + luggage Hope that helps!
Sweet... thanks for posting Paul. Will definitely be getting the Nav V for my '15 R1200GS.
Your rocker cover/cylinder guard has started to pay for itself already... So, to get the Enduro-Pro to display, you would have to have the key engaged?
That's right, the key has to be plugged in to be able to choose that mode. Once it's plugged in you don't have to worry about it again but you'll have to choose Enduro Pro every time you start it up.
Hey Paul... Thanks for posting the videos... Your '14 R1200GS is awesome! I bet you've enjoyed riding this summer since it's been on the cooler side... I am plan on purchasing a 2015 R1200GS in black. Will get the power shift and keyless ride options (new to '15). Have a test ride day comming up in two weeks that is sponsored by the dealer. That should be a fun day. Also, I'm leaning towards the spoked wheels. Might be a tad difficult to detail tho. I really like the looks of the spokes... will probably end up with them. As another poster mentioned, dude you should really blurr out your street and house number. 'Everyone' now knows where that sweet ride lives... Just a suggestion my friend. ;) John - Brampton, ON
Those sound like great options, especially for those that like to ride a lot. Let me know how that test drive went, especially around the shifting and if you got to go offroad or not. If I had a choice, I'd go with the spoked wheels instead of the cast aluminum rims. Thanks for the tip about the number, should be good now ;)
Very nice video.... :o)
Hello- nice videos. So now that you've had the bike a while, what do you think of it? I'm seriously considering a new 2014...curious.
Good bike. Haven't had any issues with it. There was one recall on the sidestand switch which was never a problem for me. The bike has a slight clicking sound at idle when it's warmed up but that's normal - just wasn't used to it. The bike is very solid on the road, and with the tires i have, dirt roads are just fine but I would definitely put on knobbies if I was offroad more often. Long trips are just great, very comfortable even for 2 people and luggage. Buffeting on the 2nd person on the back wasn't very good at highway speed though. All the options are very nice...the only thing i would change is to get the spoked wheels and perhaps a set of tires for offroad. A lot of fun!
Awesome Video! thanks for taking the time to do this. I would love to see more videos of this bike, its a beauty! Took one for a test ride last week and fell in love with it.
Thanks Paul. I get mine tomorrow and I am super stoked!
Thank you very much Paul, I finally picked up my GS this past week with factory lowered kit!
Hello Paul, Subject: Factory installed lowered kit on R1200GS (2014 water-cooled) & accessories I thank you for your posted vides which i went through a few times. I'm in the GTA. Apparently, different dealer has a different understanding about the factory lowered kit. Do you mind if I ask if yours comes with centre stand as well as Dynamic ESA (with the factory installed lowered kit)? And if it will also fit a low seat as well? Thank you and would appreciate very much your reply.
Good questions and sorry about the late reply. Lowered suspension did not prevent the bike from accepting a centre stand or getting dynamic esa. I purchased the dynamic esa, enduro pro, etc and the dealer didn't have any issues with that at all. By default the lowered suspension bike comes with the "low" seat but I actually got the "normal" seat instead (more padding for my butt!). So, in my setup, the bike is lower to the ground, but the normal seat allows a good hip-to-peg distance. Hope that helps
Nice bike, Paul. Continued riding pleasure with it. Be safe. Thanks for publicizing your videos. Great job in your descriptions, too.
For those that are concerned about the shifting, check out the afternoon drive video I posted and listen to the gear changes. Haven't had an issue with the occasional clunky shift since first oil change. 2014 R1200GS afternoon drive
Here is the link to the article that sums up the Nav V features: globeriders.com/article_pages/article07_gps/article07_nav5.shtml
Sorry, there's no sound on this unless you want to hear my 3 year old and wife playing with toys. On a side note, I still haven't had success getting the Bluetooth properly setup with by Blackberry q10 - not sure if it's the phone or the gps yet but I'll keep you posted on that.
Hey Paul, Good video. Looks like a rough ride over some of those bumps. I thought the R1200GS was to be the machine for rough roads. What ESA setting did you use. I'm considering an R1200GS. Looking for as much info as possible.
Hey thanks! Yeah the camera mount is really loose on the handlebars so I've got to fix that up because the camera bounces around and makes it look shakier than it is. The bike is actually really smooth taking potholes and cracks - I was on the "Road" setting in this video which gives you a tighter ESA and better traction than rain mode. I don't really notice a huge difference with the dynamic mode but maybe I would if I took it to the track or something.
***** Thanks for the response Paul....keep the videos coming...Rick
reekeekee1 Hi Paul. Finally got an R1200GS . Picked it up a couple of weeks ago at Serpa BMW. Nice bike but a couple of items. First, weird sound coming from underneath the tank at over 100kph. I think it's tire noise. Sounds like a Shop Vac. Second, I find the suspension very firm and the ESA settings don't seem to make much of a difference. I live in Northern Ontario where the roads are ROUGH. On the roughest of these roads the front suspension uses up only about half of its travel and I'm getting jolted pretty good regardless of the ESA setting. Any comments.
reekeekee1 Regarding the howling sound, I hear that too although I don't find it bothersome. For me it happens around 70-90km/hr and I think it's a wind vortex or turbulence from the cowling because when I duck my head behind the windshield it's not as loud. I asked the dealer about it and they said it's probably the tires needing to be broken in and will get better after riding it for awhile but it's still there after 2000k. For the suspension, did you get the enduro pro key? That allows the suspension to travel the entire length. If not, enduro mode will give you the softest suspension. You can also manually change the suspension to 'soft' setting with the control button on the handlebar if you want to keep the abs settings stricter. Hope that helps!
reekeekee1 I should probably mention that I've driven to Pickle Lake before and I can empathize with you about the terrible roads up there :)
Where is the sound? Do you have a link for the Globeriders Navigator V review?
Nice sound.
Dude she´s beautiful :D
Nice walk around. I'm about to pull the trigger one one myself. Quick note... Blur out your house number and address so you can keep that baby to yourself. ; )
I have the identical bike (same color even) but with the metal panniers. I also own and love an 09 1200GS that I've put 18k plus miles on. I ordered the new waterboxer without a test ride based upon reviews and my BMW dealer's advice. I had planned to keep the best one, but I can't bring myself to part with the waterboxer or the aircooled one. I love them both. 1300 miles into the new bike with tons of off road testing including sand, mud, water, gravel etc. I even managed to cover it and myself with ice riding in an unexpected sleet /mist at 27F. It handles it all very, very well. The bike is both quick and fast. Mine has seen 140 plus mph with the big old boxes hanging on it. (closed course test track of course). I am certain it would love to do 150 plus without the boxes, but I have a Hayabusa for that sort of thing. Succinctly stated, this is the most versatile, practical and fun bike I've ever owned. Good luck getting one, they stay sold out. My dealer has 5 GSA's on the boat, they're all sold. He has one GS on the floor. Going to Utah from the beach in NC, can't decide which to take, but the new bike has a fabulous cruise control feature that beats the hell out of the friction ring setup on my 09. Get one, they are so worth the wait. BTW, I had ordered a white one and it arrived as such. Bought the blue plastic bits and wahla, I have a blue bike that I can turn into a white one or any other color for that matter.
It totally sounds the same as my F800GS does. :) Kinda strange, but that is due to the 360° firing sequence. Enjoy riding!
What a bike.
Did you try to bleed the some of the clutch liquid? It is said that it smoothens things out when changing gear, for many. Sems like factory may overfill some. Google it.
Yes good suggestion. After the first oil change the gear shifting was a lot better, haven't had any issues since!
Love the 2014 (more than the 2013, before the steering dumper). I own a 2007 and plan to replace with a "full extras" new GS (not an "Adventure" model person myself). You also have the color that I seem to like more (which is a win for BMW, as I never liked blue bikes). I wish you plenty of fantastic rides. Wish me I manage to make my plan come true too (in Greece deep in crisis).
I wish you fantastic rides as well and hopefully you made that plan happen. I'd love to ride over in Greece sometime, that would be a true adventure :)
It sounds really great! It seems to be moaning. Thank you for posting.
Good video thanks for posting
I really want to watch this but I cannot get it to run
Paul, nice video, thanks. I ordered mine 4 weeks ago. 2014 GSA, can't wait to get it, April delivery. I am planning a trip from Calgary to Toronto in July 2014, the first LD trip on the new bike. I have pre-wired for Nav V but did not buy the unit yet, can you post the video on this? Thanks in advance.
Here is the link to the "click through" video I posted: ua-cam.com/video/-qBk7SZZHWk/v-deo.html Also, check out this article which goes into great detail on the features of the Nav V: globeriders.com/article_pages/article07_gps/article07_nav5.shtml
Such cool bikes. I generally lean towards the more sport side of the riding spectrum as far as bike choice, but after my last 2000 mile road trip, I can REALLY see the utility is extra storage, heated grips, fuel range, etc. I was also longing for some cruise control.
I hear you. I rode sport bikes as well but honestly will never go back after riding this bike. It's got lots of power but is comfortable for longer trips...it's also not really heavy like big cruisers or touring bikes. Cruise control I actually don't use too much unless i need to give my hand a break for a little bit. The heated grips essentially means i don't have to wear the big bulky gloves anymore which is a huge plus. All around it's a much better experience.
Really nice bike love the colour with the enduro pro option is what I was thinking of getting as well. I just have a few questions Paul....1) Why the lower suspension? I'm 2 inches shorter then you and I reach the ground very easily without the lowered suspension is it because of the AFO you're wearing? 2) Is the wind screen suitable for highway riding at the top position or do you need something taller for the wind @ your height? 3) What is that little blue gadget on your keychain in the ignition? Nice video , thanks for sharing!
Hey sorry for the late reply. I got the lower suspension because I need to have my feet planted firmly on the ground at all times when I come to stop even with a passenger (when you change the load setting on the bike (+passenger) it raises the suspension a little). The AFO I'm wearing does make a difference here...I'm definitely not as confident at a stop than when I'm moving. Wind screen and aerodynamics in general is very good for me. I actually find the lower setting on the highway is ok as well. Buffeting is pretty minimal. The blue thing on the keychain is something the dealer put on and holds ear plugs :)
Ok Paul , thanks a lot for the reply , I was kind of worried about the buffeting. Enjoy the bike with the weather getting better you should be able to now.
Thanks Paul.
I have the K1600 GTL. I was thinking of getting this bike as a second bike. Do you have a bluetooth for your helmet? Does the "wonder wheel" control tunes on the NAV 5? Do you have your iphone and Nav paired with the bluetooth? I have a uclear hbc200. Thxs for the video!!!
I don't have bluetooth but I was considering the BMW communicator because it has a simple interface but I'm open to suggestions if you have had good experience with another system. I haven't tried out the wonder wheel with music yet because I haven't been able to successfully pair the gps with my phone yet (Blackberry q10). I'll keep you posted if I can get that hooked up.
Thanks for uploading this video Paul. Just bought a used 2013 LC and can´t wait spring to come - might take another 3 month here in Germany :(
The vario cases are nice....ish. They are delicate. They'll break easily in a fall and they dent up fast from people opening their doors on them. I just snapped my right side pannier completely off putting the bike away in the garage. I slipped on some ice, down I went at 0 MPH, I guess that was enough to break it :(
Ah that's just bad luck! I seem to have escaped with almost zero damage to the bike and totally zero to the pannier when i went down with mine (right side). I'm guessing yours were in the extended position?
Yep!
