Jesse Crawford's first organ recording
Recorded by Orlando Marsh, pioneer of electrical recording, in the spring of 1924, this is the first ever electrical recording of a theatre organ. The organ is the 2/6 Wurlitzer which at that time was installed in Wurlitzer's Chicago showroom.
The two titles are:
When You Come to the End of a Perfect Day and
In a Corner of the World All Our Own
Marsh recorded a small number of organists for release on his "Autograph" label. He did not include bass frequencies, so the pedal part is played using 8ft reed stops.

Thomas Wright Waller, better known as "Fats" Waller, visited England in 1938, when he made a number of records on both piano and organ at EMI's Abbey Road studios. This is not from that session, but finds him in St George's Hall playing the BBC Compton, together with singer Adelaide Hall, who appears on a couple of his EMI sides. I had been aware that Fats had made a broadcast from St George's ...

A slide show showing trolleybuses from 1922 to the early 1970s. The London United views have been colourised by me. The remaining views are from my own photographs. Music is "Trolleybus" by Charles Williams

Update: This recording has now been dated to November or December, 1922. The organ is not that of the Chicago Theatre, but is a much smaller Wurlitzer, most probably the 2/6 Style D installed at that time in the auditorium in their Wurlitzer's Chicago showrooms.

I think he also referred to his favorite instrument as "the God box"

Fats loved playing the pipe organ. He called it a "groan box."

Pretty sure I haven't heard this before, but it seems familiar. Nevertheless, it is still great to hear what is probably the single most significant theatre organ recording in the instruments history. Thank you for taking the time to upload it.

Very interesting. First electric recording, very limited fidelity! Some of the stop choices sound a bit weird.

Microphones and the recording technology of the day often dictated what combinations and effects could be used in a recording. What one labels equipment could handle, another label couldn't.
