Comparing ways to furl the genoa
In this video, we are comparing furling the genoa going upwind or downwind.
In the first part, we are sailing at 45 degrees TWA, typical for sailing upwind. The sheet was released and the furling rope was pulled. Two people were not enough, it was doable with three. The sail itself was flapping fiercely and would even more in a stronger breeze. Since we are sailing upwind, the apparent wind is increased, increasing the load on the sail. At above 30 knots TWS furling with this method is almost impossible, it is very likely to cause damage due to flapping. Furling at 0 degrees TWA (head to wind) causes the genoa to smash against the mast, causing damage to the sail and steaming light.
In the second part, before sheeting we beared away from 45 TWA to 140 TWA, releasing the sheet accordingly. We kept 140 degrees TWA during furling, sailing as deep as 160 degrees TWA is also acceptable. Closer than 140 the genoa fills up more, deeper than 160 the genoa starts to come across to the other side and we are getting closer to the limit of crash gybing the main (if it is set). The sheet is eased and the furling line is pulled with ease. Since we are sailing downwind, the apparent wind is reduced, reducing the load on the sail. The sail is always filled with wind and it doesn't flap. This method makes furling the genoa easy even in a stronger 30+ knot breeze. The main helps as well since at around 160 degrees TWA the main makes a wind shadow over the genoa, making the furling even easier.

Rolex Middle Sea Race 2024 Start
Переглядів 3,8 тис.21 день тому
The video shows the start of the sailboat Karpo. In the first part, the wind was 12-15 knots and picked up to 20 at the turning mark. Our strategy was to start on the port side of the start and use the spinnaker pole to enable us to sail deep angles if the wind changed direction aft. We also wouldn't need to gybe in that case. That didn't happen and we sailed through the harbour with about 150 ...
Solo Gybe Filmed With a Drone

This was filmed on my way from Gibraltar to Tenerife. Flying the Mavic 2 Pro, I set it to Active Track mode to capture the gybe. The autopilot turned the boat while I got the asymmetric on the other side. Follow us on our social media pages: karposailing karposailing

Remigo Heavy Duty test

Več o Remigo izvnekrmnih motorjih: remigo.eu/

Nice video, and you finished the race, almost a 3rd position, well done - many retired. I think sometimes the problem with getting the spinnaker down is not releasing the halyard enough, the temptation is to let the halyard down too slowly and this keeps pressure in the spi making it more difficult to retrieve - I have a MAT 1070 so have some experience with this. As a skipper I would not be happy with one of my crew bouncing around with phone in his hand taking pictures - not wearing any wet weather gear and not wearing a lifejacket, and not helping with the manoeuvres. But that is always your choice. Congratulations again on finishing and the result.

I agree, lowering the halyard would help a lot with dropping at a closer angle. We would need to practice that more. Well, I was the one jumping around. I was live streaming to facebook, because we want our fans involved. Being dressed like this proved to be very benifitial as everyone else were sweating their balls of and for me it was perfect temperature. Lifejacket is great, I agree but we were close to shore with a lot of boats and 23 degree C water. Considering that, I chose greater agility. MAT 1070 seems like a lot of fun, maybe see you around somewhere

Thank you Karpo Sailing for this beautiful video and your participation in the 2nd Full Moon Sailing Spectacle. We enjoyed the anecdotes from the Rolex Middle Sea Race that you shared (with us) in the program "Ćakule pod Jedrima - Stories under the sails". Congratulations, once again, on placing first in your Group in both regattas! With 92 sailing boats, changing weather conditions, and sailors from all over Europe, the competition was a real challenge for all of us.
