Joe Fleet the stream guardian sharing his knowledge about native reforestation in New Zealand.
What tree should I plant in a New Zealand garden?
Please understand my videos can only cover a small number of situations about Biodiversity. Like we humans we need to eat often to survive. Can you imagine one meal a day?, What is it like for our native birds. There are four seasons to the year, We have spring summer autumn and winter. Spring and summer, a time, an awakening a beginning of new life. Autumn a time where trees spread their seed far and wide A time when birds consume as many seeds as they can find to prepare for the coming winter. June and July a time of loss of life. a time of high mortality how many Fan tails do you see in July. The best time to feed our native birds in our gardens, Time for seed bird feeders a time for sugar water. To cap it all they have the many predators to contend with. It is not all doom and gloom I'm happy to tell you all. Great strides are being made to eliminate the latter. With continued support together we will make NZ as I knew it when I was a boy.

This large and distinctively-coloured pigeon is a familiar sight to many New Zealanders. This is because the New Zealand pigeon (or kereru) has a widespread distribution through the country, being present in extensive tracts of native forest, and rural and urban habitats, including most cities. As well as allowing close approach, it often roosts conspicuously, such as on powerlines or on the to...

Cuttings can be taken from September through to May the next year. Fuchsia excorticata, commonly known as tree fuchsia, New Zealand fuchsia and by its Māori name kōtukutuku, is a New Zealand native tree belonging to the family Onagraceae. The Māori name kōtukutuku is derived from tukutuku meaning "to let go" referring to its flaky bark. The fruit name kōnini comes from an Eastern Polynesian ter...

What a legend. Thanks for the tour fullas
I've just had my first karaka seeds germinate ! I'm in Greymouth & the big karaka on blaketpwn tip-head has seed I collected last season, just in case other coasters are interested in doing the same. I put them on pots & left them three months, over wintre. November they have germinated lawrie metcalf is right, in his 'propagation of nz native plants' bk, when he suggested tall pots, as the root system is longer ! Guess that's because it's a large tree. Fast growing possibly. Beautiful shiny leaves. Now the challenge is keeping them growing and healthy. I didn't know they are frosttender ! Thanks Joe
Thanks Joe for the lacebark info, love it's delicate open form. Loving your videos, such great tips ! regeneration & creating tree nurseries has such purpose & is so much fun. Keep u the gd work joe
nicely done.
Hi Joe, I have seen pigeons feeding on trees with white flowers. The pigeons seem to eat them what trees are those. I could do with something to attract pigeons down the back of my section.
Firstly Paul, there is a need to identify the pigeon you have seen. Go on line to find out more about them, Maybe an Email to DOC The NZ native pigeon is a very large bird with a distinctive white chest. They are one of the few birds Large enough to consume the large Tawa tree berries, thus helping to spread our native trees There are many species of trees with white flowers a native pigeon will eat on any berry available to them .I have produced a number of videos about this bird you can look at.
Thanks Joe I'll plant a couple
I live in a coastal city and in 1994 i purchased a house on a large bare section. I planted a RewaRewa with no concept of how big it would get. It proved to be an amazing haven for birds, particularly for sparrows and waxeyes. Sadly on a recent open home visit, the section is as bare as it once was.
It reads like you have a piece of land that,s ideal to build a bird bush habitat. For the most part my past videos cover many of the things that you will face in doing so. Take a look at the places around you, that will give some idea what to do. By the way In spring Rewarewa produce a lot of nectar.
This video really cleared up my confusion about which trees are low-maintenance and still look great. I love how practical the advice is! I’ll definitely be planting some of these suggestions.
Great, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I hope you find your perfect tree!
Really good breakdown of what works best for different garden types! New Zealand has such diverse landscapes, so it’s good to get these specifics. 🌳
Yes the country has a wide range of choices.
Great video, learned a lot.
Now that you have learned a lot, why not plant a tree?
Awesome guide!
I had no idea about native species in NZ, this really opened my eyes! 🌿
Welcome to the world of New Zealand native trees, there's a lot more to learn, please subscribe.
I never knew about the different types of trees that grow well in NZ, this is so useful! 🌱
Glad I could help you learn about the trees of New Zealand!
I appreciate the focus on sustainability. Choosing native trees that support local wildlife is a priority for me, and this video gave me some great options to look into for my garden
That's the idea, to give you inspiration to create a haven for native birds!
The tips on seasonal growth are something I’ll keep in mind when planting. It’s important to know what to expect through the year.
I am so pleased you find it useful. Remember to watch other videos on my channel.
I always struggled choosing the right tree for my garden, especially considering the weather patterns here in New Zealand. This video was exactly what I needed! The suggestions make a lot of sense for our climate and soil.
You’re welcome, I hope your garden thrives!
Fantastic info on how to deal with pests in New Zealand gardens! So many trees I’ve considered had issues with that. 🌲
I'm glad the info on pests was useful. I hope you find a native tree you love that can thrive in your garden.
Great info!
I hope this is useful, tell your friends.
Very helpful.
Thanks for watching!
The tips on climate and soil are great-I'll definitely consider that when choosing a tree. It’s so important to plant what thrives in your area.
Thanks for this! I’ve been looking into trees that will grow well in my coastal garden and the advice on salt tolerance and wind resistance was super useful. Definitely bookmarking this for reference!
So many natives are salt tolerant! Shiney leaf caprosma- repens, also called mirror-leaf, flax, there is a swamp ribbonwood which likes salt Marsh, cabbage tree, nikau, rengarenga, the psuodopanax seems to love growing along the coast. karo, carokia

🌳Good one Joe. Thank you for all the effort. Good video.
Thanks for the feedback. It is important that people choose the right species to plant in their gardens, what I have shown you today, if done carefully is, I believe, a good choice.
Hi Joe, good explanation thank you. I need a few new tees in my garden. This will be the one.
Thanks for watching! I hope the tree thrives for you.
Nice one Joe 😊
Thank you, I hope the video is useful to you.
Great stuff Joe. Keep up the good work 👏 👍
Great idea
great content keep up the amazing work.
Bugger it. I'm going to make a podocarp forest in Blenheim NZ. Have been researching for 4 years now and I'm nearly ready to start breaking ground.
I see you have been researching for some time. I have put out many educational videos on how to do this or that. These could be useful to you. I hope so. I made many mistakes. Looking at these videos I'm sure you will avoid many of the disappointments I have experienced. One particular Podocarp I found easy to grow was Totora Grown up through a nurse crop of either broom, Blackberry or Tree Lucerne just any plant that grows quickly just make sure that the tip of your Totora has light. In fact any trees you select you will need to make sure the main stem has light and watering during the summer months. Let me know if this works for you. Regards, Joe.
New Zealand’s forests are thriving thanks to these initiatives.
A greater number of people need to participate to get back what has been lost, subscribe and let others know what we are trying to do.

Awesome joe
Glad you liked the video. Can I asked you to share? Thanks.
Jst happened on this vid, too much all right, impressive job in protecting the native wood lands guys, Mr G Hartley..... that's a name I've not heard in a long time , absolute respect for that man.
Thank you for this. I also have planted acacia as a nurse plant for my native plantings on my north Canterbury block, and they are growing fast, I had a panic about how I'd get them down when my natives had matured. Now I know, thanks so much Joe
So pleased to be of help. To help others can you share these videos.
Hi Joe, wonderful content! Quick question, do you know which of our Nz ponga can be grown from cuttings (replant after felling at base), and then given plenty of water.
Most Ponga species will sprout when replanted in a shaded site there is a need to never let your ponga dry out.
Futureproofing our land through forest restoration is vital.
Especially NATIVES.
This video motivates me to learn more and take action
It makes my day when I read someone emails me and is wanting to take some action. I do not know where you live but you could make enquiries to see if there are any environmental projects near you. To help me, spread the environment word across NZ. Share.my videos with others. Thanks.
