Since the demo, I've discovered a much easier way to mount pastel paper. Rather than using a spray adhesive which is messy, sticky, and has to be done outdoors for ventilation I'm now using Scotch 568 Positionable Mounting Adhesive. It's a roll of adhesive-backed paper. You unroll a section, which exposes a sticky side; place the acid-free matboard (cut to the desired size) onto the sticky side...

New to pastels, but have watercolored. This is exactly what i am missing , a range of colors in values. Will definitely organize my pastels using this method.and now I know where and how ti fill in the blanks . Thanks so much and showing how this organization helps by making it easier to use analogous colors.
Glad to help! I imagine you know painting with watercolors, you generally work lights first then darks. With pastels, keep in mind it's more like oils, you work darks to lights. If you have trouble seeing the value of a pastel's color when painting, you can try this method: If you're using a good sanded paper, do an underpainting using the grayscale with maybe 4 to 5 values. You can use watercolors or thinned acrylic paints to make the grayscale washes. (Remember, pure white is a Highlight not an overall color - use it for example in the sparkle of an eye!) When the washes are dry, you should find it easier to match up the value of your pastels, because the pastel colors you choose should be the same value as your grayscale underpainting. Remember, squinting is your friend!
Hi Dot - i've watched this twice now - and am saving this. i've tried the mixing of colours with the same value - and its a revelation at how the colour doesn't deaden - it stays alive and interesting. thanks a million... come to ireland and do a class.
Thank you and happy you're experimenting. It's the one thing we artists fail to do! We just want to get into the meat of it. Someday, I will get to Ireland it is on my list of places to visit. I actually paint every Monday morning with a lovely older woman who was born in Ireland. Great stories!
You are a great teacher. Do you have other videos?
Thank you! Sorry, spilt all I know! But if I do, you'll see it here at Maryland Pastel Society.
Try doing a painting without purple in it Then add purple! Something about purple adds mystery to a composition.
Try adding red in your shadows if you want some real excitement!
I’m curious to know what your opinion is on Pan Pastels? I also want to say you give invaluable and in depth information on everything. Thank you
Thank you for your kind words! I was given a set of Pan Pastels a while ago and tried them. The colors are very rich, and I've seen some very nice work done with them. Having said that, I find they are not portable (plein air or traveling with your pastels) and take up a lot of space in my studio workspace versus my small blocks of pastel. I did give them a decent trial because everything new has a learning curve. The way I paint, I felt I was limited as I can be an "aggressive" painter (the way I use mark making). I like the tactile feel of the pastel in my hand - I am not fond of using tools for applying pastel. I can see their use for those artists who want to use pastels, but don't like the feel of pastels on their hands (that is a thing!).
Just found you and love your work 🖼️
Thank You!
Thank you Dot, I am having trouble to understand the value too, but this videos is amazing and so helpful.❤
I think all the dry mediums (pastel, colored pencil, etc.) are very hard to understand regarding value because you can't dilute them to lighten, if you add white, you can deaden the color if you're not careful, and adding black to darken a color can also deaden it! Best thing is to have a decent range of color/value and use a grayscale. An easy way to get started on a painting is to do a thumbnail sketch in 3 to 4 values that are very distinctive, step away from the sketch and see if it works. If it does, use that sketch for working on your "good" painting. Something else you can do is a grayscale underpainting (using sanded paper like Uart) with watercolor, ink, thin acrylics to give you a map of important values. The underpainting will not take away the tooth of the sanded paper. Try to match the pastel to the value map as you paint. Remember - SQUINT TO SEE VALUES!!!!!!!!!!!!
I also just had my mind opened to a world of new possibilities!! I’m going to be organizing by value.. it’s exactly why I’m so frustrated with color in boxes I bought .. not enough values but beautiful colors ! I do have the red sheets to check values as I pick out my choices to paint .. but it takes awhile … Thank you so much Dot I’m going to pass along your video and your great information to PSWC.
Glad that it helps! I will give you a tip! After you've organized your box, while you are painting put the pastels you're using in a small dish or shallow box. When you're finished your painting, it will be easier to put the used pastels back where they belong.
Dot thanks so much for this video. This is great information, especially for a beginner. I have never seen this information shared in any of the other videos I’ve watched. I agree you are a great teacher.
Thank you!
This was by far one of the better videos I have seen. You are a great teacher. The value scale with the pastels laid out on them made so much sense. Thank you
If you can wrap your head around color and value, life gets so much easier!
What a useful, eclectic and fun video! Dot is a down-to-earth personality and easy to like. Thanks!
Thank you!
Wishing I lived in Maryland so I could study with this wonderful, practical and good humored artist. Such great info here.
Thank you for your wonderful comments! I believe in sharing info and I hope you find some great instructors near you who share too!
