Doppelgänger is the only way to spell from what little German i know but my guess would be a partial translation of the word thrned it into double+ganger and then back to the german (with the mistake) doppleganger.

I think what she's talking about is the Mandela effect. It's when our brain fills in the gaps of information stored in our memories. Like if LooneyTunes was spelled with "Toons" or "Tunes" or if Pikachu's tail had a black or brown marking at the root or tip.
