Statistics show that manual wheelchairs are poorly maintained, and there is evidence that manual wheelchair users generally do not know how to keep their wheelchairs working as efficiently as possible. The primary goal of I-WHEEL is to investigate whether the I-WHEEL program can increase the knowledge of wheelchair maintenance for manual wheelchair users. We are also investigating the effect of the I-WHEEL program on manual wheelchair efficiency, and user satisfaction after completing an educational program.
The Right tools for Wheelchair Maintenance
Many clinicians go through their workweek without touching a tool. They see something that needs doing on a chair, issue a decree, and magically the work is done. There are others who can’t wait to get their hands dirty; they feel there is not a chair on the face of the earth that wouldn’t benefit from their attention.
Between the two, lays the technician’s nightmare, the ones they fear, the ones who know enough to do damage - and not enough to realize it. This information will help you understand tools commonly used on wheelchairs and perhaps endear yourself to the technicians you work with, as a therapist who is kind to chairs.

lubricant and cleaning
Переглядів 15 тис.8 років тому
Wheelchairs really benefit from a good cleaning. Mild soap and water is recommended for the frame and non-absorbent bits. In fact you can clean it as you would a car. Finishing with car polish will add a layer of protective wax to help it to stay clean. If the chair hasn’t been cleaned in ages dampening it for a while should soften the accumulated grime. Remember water isn’t going to hurt the c...
Tire & Tube
Переглядів 1 тис.8 років тому
The only drawback to pneumatic tires is they can lose their air. This occurs either over time, or due to a puncture. Air loss occurs naturally at a rate of about 50% in two months, the loss is through the walls of the tube not the valve. If air is lost at a quicker rate you have a puncture. Find more www.iwheel.ca
Caster Stem
Переглядів 6 тис.8 років тому
Caster stems that are not vertical cause a number of problems. If the stem leans forwards at the top the chair is difficult to turn and the knees are lower wheeling forwards than when wheeling backwards. If the stem is leaning backwards at the top, the chair is difficult to keep in a straight line and the knees raise up higher when rolling forwards. Also whenever the wheeler stops the chair wil...
Different caster and bearing adjustment
Переглядів 2,9 тис.8 років тому
Some chairs use bushings at the top instead of bearings. Bushings are basically discs of low friction material, like polypropylene or bronze with a hole for the axle. They are cheaper than bearings but tend to wear quicker. A bearing can often be used to replace a worn bushing. Find more at www.iwheel.ca
Manual Wheelchair Bearings
Переглядів 25 тис.8 років тому
One of the most common service tasks is to check and adjust or replace the bearings. It is at the bearing - not the wheel that actual movement occurs. Servicing bearings is relatively simple; identifying the need for service is even easier. The rewards realized from replacing a seized bearing make learning a little mechanics very worthwhile. A manual wheelchair has twelve bearings. Wheel bearin...
Toeing Error Part Two

Wheel camber is the name given to a situation where the wheels viewed from the front are not parallel. Camber has a number of benefits as well as drawbacks. Toeing error is the name given to a situation where the wheels viewed from above are not parallel; toeing error has no benefits, only drawbacks. Toeing error is the same as camber except rotated through 90 degrees. Check www.iwheel.ca for m...

Why Peer Mentoring By Dr. Sawatzky (I-WHEEL)

Watch and listen as Bonnie Sawatzky, one of the principle investigators of the I-WHEEL maintenance research study, explains the problems in spreading information and recent discoveries in wheelchair maintenance to wheelchair users in the community. And how this innovative I-WHEEL program will use peer-mentorship (wheelchair users teaching wheelchair users) to provide an understanding of and tra...

My wheelchair push rims have had a black oily substance on them forever. I put on push rim covers and now there is so much black oily substance under the covers that it is now becoming a problem again. Any suggestiions?
Someone was attempting to fix my front caster and removed the wheel and the metal casing instead of just the wheel. Help
This video was so helpful! Thank you despite this being a bit older.

I started a job as Adaptive Equipment Specialist in April. One of the department’s responsibilities is wheelchair maintenance, repair and customization. While we have an excellent training and mentoring program, this channel is a phenomenal addition for learning the truly important finer points of these things. I am incredibly grateful for the work that is being done to bring this content and look forward to learning more.
Manual,wheelchair,prize,Keena,g,hai.
Funny how camera person has no idea where to zoom into to see parts in detail just as tech sees them with how close his eyes are to what is being touched, and also key lighting to the part. Using a real mic will kill the 55 gallon barrel echo.
Its tough to accomplish if you only have One hand
A box spanner has depth for reaching over a distance, you showed an open ended spanner on one end and a ring spanner on the other end. If you need more leverage(leeverage) you could use a tommy bar with a box spanner, or a socket set with extensions ans different right angled bar lengths. Why didn't you show the actual maintence tasks and the appropriate tools to use, rather than just the tools, very uninformative, the equivalent of showing pencils and saying these are used for drawing.
Thank you, that's really helped. We did have a moment of despair when we realised the active 2 has loose ball bearings, one fell into the centre but we managed to rebuild it😀👍🏼👍🏼
Again, super video. I'm surprised not a lot more viewers have seen these...or at least given a thumbs up or whatever. I am new to beingin in a wheelchair permantly ad it's kind of like my legs now.
This is incredibly helpful and insightful, thank you.
how to adjust the vertical quic of the front removable wheels. increase or decrease the length
how much people can charge me for this kind a Job? what is the fair price? for Manual wheelchair or power wheelchair? thanks for your quick respond.
Just what I was looking for, but you are too far away from the microphone- don't zoom in, instead have your operator move the camera closer next time so we can hear without echo. Thanks.
Would you happen to know the paint color number for this teal/blue? I have a GPV this color and the poor thing is scratched to bits.
You probably wont see this since all the videos were uploaded so long ago, but you are helping me to repair a beat up/ neglected wheelchair I bought recently. Thank you so much for uploading all the tutorial videos! They are helping Immensely.
Thank you for the great tutorial.
These are very informative videos. Thank you,
Hi Ian, My sister's main wheelchair has 24 X 1" rear wheels that are 8 spoke and made of some sort of plastic/composite material. It is a nice Everret Jenning reclining chair whose bolts that attach the wheel to the frame are about 7/32 inch thick SAE.. I need to replace one of the wheels with a spare 24 X 1 inch wheel I have from a chair bought at a flea market. It's bolt is possibly a machine bolt which I believe is 1/4 inch. I can use this wheel with the 7/32 inch bolt but there is a bit of play in the 1/4 wheel's bearing. Is there a way to exchange the bearings on the wheels or adapt a bolt to fit the bearing? Thank you
