KRV 2024 - Day 3 - H45AL
A bit shorter leg, went pretty ok. The mistake to 8th was pretty lame, I knew I am to the right of the control, but saw some people having fun in a small valley even more to the right, and decided to check it out. Made no sense. Run into another runner, stopping is hard without a working knee. I hope he was okay.

KRV 2024 - Day 2 - H45AL

Another great day in Kainuu. I was not very satisfied with some of the route choices. To the 4th for example I managed to climb an extra hill. On many occasions I had difficulty figuring out whats a hill and whats a depression.

A lovely terrain, and a really fun race with some mistakes to spice it.
Jukola 2024 - 7th leg - 2nd mass start

A really fun race on a very nice terrain. First 18 controls of Lakia Jukola's 7th leg. I made a mistake with the camera angle, had to compensate at editing. I apologize for some mild cursing, my ankle suffered some misteps, and the knee while better after the surgeries, still disliked some of the jumping up and down the rocks :) Still it was a lot of fun, next year we go again!
Lapland O-Week Day 2 - C+ course

My son's effort on the second day of this wonderful event. The course's difficulty level was much higher than his skill level, but he wanted the challenge. I think he did a very good job, mainly the recoveries from trouble were pretty impressive.

Very beautiful scenery to run this day. The weather was perfect 18C with not too strong wind. Knee is still very weak, but its getting better. Made some bigger mistakes, the compass was behaving quite weird on some places. Had a lot of fun!

Jukola 2023 - 7th leg - 2nd mass start - 1st control carnage

The first 2 hours of my Jukola 2023 race. Sorry for the occasional swearing and slow run speed. I am recovering from a knee surgery and an osteotomy done in November. The effort was not without some pain. Sometimes things slipped out. Mainly downhills were very challenging for me, had to find an easier way often. The organizers did a lot of things right, but there was a crucial mistake done in ...
My sons team no 7 was so happy when no 6 got in 5 mins before the cut. went on to get top 100 for the leg with a clear track. seroiusly worth stacking the shorter day legs with faster runners to avoid this.
I do enjoy these mass starts, as they really give a "Jukola vibe" and in the daylight where I get to enjoy the sights and the forest more. It is true tho, at least a good -10 minutes you can count for traffic. For me the others were less of a help than a distraction, two times I got drawn to a wrong direction when I didnt check my compass. I wish there would be a bit more course variation for 7th leg, it was a bit too much "train". Its more fun to have this mass of people run around clueless building social interactions :) I understand that for the very top runners a more straight leg is needed for the competition to be exciting / fair.
Wow now I understand why my sons team number 7 was so happy to just miss this.
What is happening in the beginning of the video? Why are people next to maps when seemingly they are not running yet? Why are they taking out and looking at the maps? I don't get 7th leg, 2nd mass start?
I thought the officials give the map to each 20 runners in their supervision slot right before the mass start?
Its a bit of confusing mess, but at Jukola they close the normal relay at 8:45. All team's 7th runner who did not leave to the forest is going out in a mass start at 9:00. They lead us to where the maps are, and you are not supposed to look at your map before the start (you can take it to your hand about a minute before). What you see people doing there is that we are searching for our maps. The 6th or 5th runners map was still there on the top, so most of the people is trying to find their 7th runner map which was hidden under the others.
@@netrunner3776 Got it, thanks 😀 Is it only 7th leg runners who get to do it? Or 4,5,6 too if they did not start yet? Great idea for offering everybody the incredible Jukola experience. I need to start prepping and hope to do first Jukola soon.
@@juhanivalimaki5418 The 7th runners who didn't go out yet start at 9:00 and then there is another mass start for any 4,5,6 etc runners at 9:20: Do come and participate, its insane amounts of fun. People of all skill levels are participating.
@@netrunner3776 Skill level is maybe not the number one problem, neither some basic condition. Rather it's the 10kg I could lose. 😂 20+ years and 16kg ago I ran like a gazelle in the forest, control to control, never stopping for nothing, taking even crazy risks with rocks. Officials in school and army were not even ready to take me to finish yet and suspected me of cheating, which I never did, no need. A bit sad that even this year Jukola and Venla medals could have been handed over after just visiting the scale and taking the BMIs of the runners... maybe additional weights to low BMI's GPS vests?
Saw myself in the video in line for the 1st control at 14:10-14:20, was my first Jukola and so also the first time I had experienced something like this, cant say I loved this particular part of Jukola :)
13:15 - 14:30 is not orienteering but a bad joke... thank you for sharing this! 👍
Nice to get a "personal" camera man. I stood oposit you at the maps. Different route but then I show up at K1 in the mess. Not the best plan to have common K1 for the restart. Where I as a Swede is trying to punch upside down. Later I can see my back and drinking at first water station. Control after that we punch together. After that I think I disapear from the video. Finishing at 2:33 on tired legs. Agree that it was a lot of following other runners but then I noticed some people missing the forkings.
Hi! Really cool! After that I did not make mistakes (it was quite hard to do so with the trains), but I finished with 2:40, so unlikely that I was able to catch up again.
PS. You should absolutely orient the map in the direction of running instead of north up!
Thanks for the feedback! I will try to do so next time.
This used to be far worse in the old "stiftklemme" or even (in Norway) ticket punch pliers, but I agree, the first few controls on the restart legs needs to be handled the same as the first leg controls.
