    Thank you for the video :) beautiful work! I have just received my home kiln and would like to create earthenware jewelry beads. I would like to put into practice a single/raw glaze firing. I have read on internet that this firing can take from 8 to 12 hours. Basically, on my kiln safety instructions says to don’t heat the kiln continuously for more than 8 hours. I am not sure if I bought the right kiln for my work?Does this firing depends on the dimension of the pieces? Is 8 hours enough for a raw glaze firing? I am confused. I will appreciate any help 🙂

    y dont need to use any metal wire ...My system is i make 100/300 conelike spikes or nails with clay! ok ? dry and cook and just impale your beads on top. They have to be very sharp like a needle at the end and very straight AND y have to erase a little the inside of the hole of the beads so that it is conic and no enamel will block the hole and like that the spike is reusable. Also the string of the necklace will be safe with that.

    Good job! Very clear explanation, great didactic and way of passing on knowledge! I don't know if it helps but maybe if you bend the ends of the kanthal wire around the corners of the blocks (c shape) prevent the wire from flexing so much. I hope to help. thanks

      Hi Laurie, most clays will be leather hard within a couple of hours after forming (if left uncovered), especially for smaller forms like jewelry. You can prolong the drying process by using plastic bags to cover your work.

    Hi! Great idea!! The points where the kanthal wire comes in contact within the holes in the beads...will the wire cause those spots to NOT come out glazed after firing? I am making a piece that needs to be 100% glazed all around, even within the hole, so it can be 100% food safe (as the piece will be submerged completely in food)

    • @kathyhancock7080
      @kathyhancock7080 Рік тому

      The wire will stick to the glaze. Try using low fire non toxic/food safe glazes cones 05 or 06have a large assortment of non toxic glazes, and DON'T glaze inside the wholes as the wires will stick, and also, the clay will be hard enough that it will not absorb your food or be toxic to it, so don't worry about that.

I am currently using a microwave kiln to fire my Raku beads but because I have no way to anchor them properly, one side sticks to the kiln paper. Can I use Kanthall Wire in the kinl that goes inside the microwave? I hope to get a reply and would appreciate any type of information regarding this question. Thank you very much .

      @earthnocturne7141 5 років тому

      Hi Madelyn, just noticed your comment sorry for the delay. I don't have experience with the microwave kiln that you're using, but I wouldn't recommend using any type of metal wire in the microwave. Maybe you could prick some holes where the wire will go, fire the piece, and then glue the wire into the holes after firing? Glue on bails also work, I use a lot of wire wrapped bails too (need a threading hole). There are many options, I hope you'll find one that works for you!

Y can do up to 25 beads of d12mm in such a tiny kiln in a matter of 20 min with this system !!! but up to 1000C not cone 6 or 1250C. I drive this mini kiln wth a pid controller rex c100 ( 15€ at our socalled friend Ali) to have correct temperature! IT WORKS !! The system with tungten bars takes too much room and bend anyway and is troublesome to extract the beads. Just do clay nail swith a big basis...some will break , just do more!!!

      Hi Aida, Welcome to the wonderful world of ceramic bead making! I buy kanthal wire on amazon: www.amazon.com/Temperature-Gauge-Variety-Craft-Applications/dp/B00GHXGF7Q?keywords=kanthal+wire+14&qid=1537687872&sr=8-2&ref=sr_1_2 This is 14 gauge wire, the largest I use to hang beads in the kiln. I less often use 16 gauge for firing and also for inserting into pendants as permanent bails. 18, 20 and 22 gauge are also good for bails. When looking for a kiln, first make sure that your home has the proper amp service available for the size kiln that you're looking at. Your available amperage should be higher than the amperage of the kiln. I only have 20 amp service so my kiln is 15 amps and only 120 volts. Not much more than a toaster! It's an Olympic Doll Kiln, it goes to Cone 10 though I haven't fired it past Cone 6. I love it lots! Skutt makes great kilns, too, I think they have a few 120v models available. You'll want a kiln that can reach at least Cone 6, glass kilns won't fire to ceramic temps. Thanks for your questions, I'm uploading new vids this week, happy to answer anything you need help with!

    • @earthnocturne7141

      Welcome, Debagni! There are other types of 'clays' that you can use without a kiln such as air-dry clay, cold 'porcelain', and polymer (needs an oven). Ceramics are fired either in a kiln or other firing method. There are vids here on YT that can also show you alternative firing methods, such as the 'trash can' kiln or pit firing. I hope you'll find some way to make it work and find a place for your creativity to come alive with ceramics!
