A reflection on the state of open source in 2023 - Явор Папазов
Переглядів 466 місяців тому
Open source has its origin rooted deeply in communities of like-minded idealists, racing against the commercial alternatives to remain viable. Fast-forward 40 years, and the situation couldn't be more different: Nowadays, open source consists either of corporate-approved projects that mostly serve some vague strategic purpose, and will be eagerly abandoned after the quarterly budget review, or ...

Multi cloud cluster monitoring with Kubernetes and Thanos - Mihail Mihaylov
Переглядів 396 місяців тому
Automating the process of spinning up databases on private/shared Kubernetes clusters is challenging, to say the least. Coping with the issues in those multi-cloud environments in an abstract yet reliable way is equally important. If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? The SRE team at MariaDB had this challenge. Over 400 (and counting) Kubernetes clus...

great talk, but the amount of cpu used for all kernel "paranoia" calls, makes me think we need a more modern slim Linux to save energy and overall reduce all that complexity.. virtual file system is nice but camon "hello world" prog just wants move a buffer of bytes to another place

These people are called real programmers. Nowadays, everyone want minimalist design on their work desk for productivity and stuff.. what a shame.. They have videos not less than 4K resolution with their face on thumbnails.. They just pretend to know everything and their linkedIn profile will give sadness and heartbreak for freshers because they know everything and did everything.. These guys are real programmers whose desk is just messy as their codes.. Just 1 external monitors with bunch of files on their desktop. They have food, beers everything on their desk, like messy makes them more creative and productive..

What fascinates me as an example of how the group approaches their job is Netflix's willingness to let disks fail as opposed to investing in RAID. Focus on the customers' needs, not on sexy (expensive) technology--supports a very successful company. Lots of learning to do here.

Nothing to get cheerful about . .

Although clearly an experienced and talented core kernel developer, this talk is mostly self-congratulatory about being "right" about something, aimed to boost his own ego for that reason. The technical parts are rushed, convoluted and difficult to understand even for programmers, and not explained well. He is not giving the talk in the spirit of furthering learning, he is giving the talk to further his own ego while attacking Linus Torvalds for being "wrong" once. There is no right and wrong, only shades of grey. You would not see Linus first taking a selfie in front of a room of people while congratulating himself about his work being all over the Kernel. I would not enjoy working with him despite his skills. His is quite childish.

I don't mind your critique, I just flew in from Lyon and had only 2 hours of sleep before giving this talk. I wasn't focused and gave a much better version of it at an Open Source Summit, but that wasn't recorded. I had a hard time focusing during the talk and was quite disappointed in my performance by the end of it, and was really just trying to get through it. My cracks at Linus was more for humor. If you took it as ego, I'm fine with that 😉

"You don't need to know that much, only a little bit about programming"; proceeds to talk about complex hardware security architecture and it's flaws that can lead to complex side channel attacks on the cache and shows x86 assembly (assembly being the hardests programming language to read in a short amount of time). Lol. I learned this shit in my graduate computer science systems classes. I know we see it as simple, but other people see it for the black magic it is.
