Why I Bought A Sony A7 IV For Cinematography In 2024!
Figured I should explain why I bought this 3 year old camera to use as my main tool for cinematography and filmmaking in 2024, versus many other powerhouse cameras on the market.

It’s 2006, It’s Martin Scorsese, its Bahston. We’ve got action, suspense, and an all-star cast in Jack Nicholson, Vera Farmiga, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, the CEO of Boston himself Mark Wahlberg (not saying I’m a fan of this person and his actions, but he was kinda essential for this movie). The list goes on, but it would be an understatement to say I love this movie. It’s a giant game of cat and mouse, trying to figure out who’s ratting on who, with so much tension you could smell it. If you like crime movies or thrillers, this is a must watch. 9/10.

I appreciate this review. Everyone else seems to be more focused on having their political religion catered to. The condemnation of objectivity and it's demonetization is the core reason the scenario of this movie will actually happen.

I'm very conflicted about this movie, because I like it on one level, but under serious scrutiny, it's a pretty dumb film. For the record, I'm an Alex Garland fan. As a director, the guy has an impressive resume. Ex Machina, Annihiliation and Men are all bangers with covert (or not so covert in the case of Men) feminist themes. In the past, this made me presume he was somewhere on the left. But not anymore. Not after seeing Civil War. Civil War is Garland planting his flag firmly in the camp of centrist, milquetoast, establishment liberalism. Does this film "work"? Yes, on one level. It's well made, the performances are good, and it's intense / gripping when it needs to be. The problem arises when you step back, analyze its politics and think about what it's trying to achieve when the sound and fury is over. Then you realize it's a very muddled and not particularly well thought-out piece. Based on all the interviews he's given about the film, this movie is supposed to be a warning. Garland is primarily concerned that something like this could actually happen in the future and hopes this movie will snap ordinary citizens out of their extreme political polarization and back to "reality", whatever he perceives that to be. This perspective and its stated goal (especially the way he goes about trying to achieve it) couldn't be more gullible and naive. You can't resolve the conflict of extreme political polarization without examining its root causes, which Garland refuses to do. That's why he drops us into the middle of the Civil War instead of showing us the events that lead up to it. A serious examination would require putting Capitalism and all its problems / contradictions under the microscope. Liberals never want to do this because at the end of the day, they're capitalists too, just like the hard right. This is the entire problem with modern American politics. We don't have a real left wing. We have two capitalist parties. So, in lieu of anything that might actually be introspective and thoughtful, Garland decides to glorify journalism. Or, at least that's what he thinks he's doing. He thinks the problem is the press has been too disparaged for the last decade or so and people don't read enough "objective" news anymore. I can only laugh at how foolishly misguided this is, because our legacy media hasn't been unbiased for at least the last 40-50 years. They, too, are merely tools of capital and the security state, too often obeying its wishes and reporting only the things that won't anger our oligarchs while ignoring crucial stories and perspectives that capitalists find inconvenient. The idea of noble war photographers uncovering American atrocities hasn't been true since Vietnam. Since then, the modern press is mainly concerned with ignoring or covering up American war crimes and cheerleading us into the next conflict. And how does Garland go about trying to prove his poorly conceived argument? By showing us so-called journalists who are themselves a bunch of psychotic adrenaline junkies, not so different than the soldiers themselves. Anyone who thinks the goal of journalism should simply be to document suffering (whether military or economic) has lost the plot. The idea that documenting pain, trauma and systemic problems, rather than analyzing them and providing the needed context so people can actually identify the problem and do something about it, is a VERY liberal idea and it's everything that's wrong with the modern world; not what's going to save us. Repeatedly, we see Lee say nothing and do nothing as people are about to be executed in horrible ways. And we're supposed to nod like wizened sages and say "Yes. This is journalism. This is how we save the world." What an unbelievable crock of f*cking horsesh*t. In today's world (forget about the future) those pictures would either never be published, or they would be buried on page 12. Modern newspapers only ever front-and-center this kind of content when they want to get you fired up for a war. When they're doing propaganda. Usually for foreign wars that military contractors want the people to support (Ukraine, for example.) When its in the interests of capital to ignore atrocities, you see and hear little or nothing from the corporate press. Look at how they're doing their best to ignore a genocide in Gaza right now and make excuses for the state perpetrating it. That's the reality of "journalism" in 2024. That's what Garland is going to great lengths to try and glorify. Ultimately, all Lee is really accomplishing is advancing her career by taking snapshots of torture and death. If Garland's goal was to make me disgusted with the main characters as much as any soldier who stupidly subordinates their will to the state and carries out war crimes in its name, then he succeeded. If his goal was to make the press look respectful again, he failed utterly. If his goal was to make a politically neutral film that could change minds, he failed catastrophically, because anyone with the IQ of a sack of doorknobs can see that Nick Offerman is a Trump figure and Jesse Plemons is wearing red shades to code him as right wing. It's not that clever. Will the movie have an effect on the next election? Maybe. But even if it does, all it will succeed at is propping up a miserable, failing status quo for a little while longer. It doesn't get to the root of any of our problems. Keeping our capitalist hamster wheel going on the backs of millions of immiserated workers is all establishment liberals really care about at the end of the day. Especially rich ones like Garland.

Wow. Thank you for going so in depth with your thoughts, this was a great read with a lot of amazing points. I agree with the fact that modern journalism would likely still post heavily biased information, but it doesn’t hurt the people for press to try their best at centrism. Thank you for watching and for sharing!

I really appreciate this review among the cacophony of *bad* or just *biased* takes people churned out in the last weeks. This is a masterpiece with subtext and layers to its meaning. Defnitely not easy to digest, if you expect an average hollywood action movie. Most certain hard to digest, if you lack the media literacy to navigate todays intercorrelating *web* of cultural wars, social media craze etc. This film said so much but people don´t want to listen...

It’s a Bond movie. I love spy films and thrillers, and yes this is good, but it’s not one of my favourites of the genre. We have Agent 007, who is presumed dead but comes back after MI6 is under attack, and to be honest he’s kinda washed. I was however a huge fan of Javier Bardem’s character, as he really knows how to play a villain. If you like Bond movies, you’d probably enjoy this one. 7.5/10

Nocturnal Animals (2016) Directed by Tom Ford, starring Amy Adams and Jake Gyllenhaal, this movie is about a wealthy woman who left her partner years ago, mostly due to family pressure because his writing career wasn’t going anywhere. Years later, he sends her a proof of his book that she reads every day and gets fully lost in the story. We, the viewer, get to see a combination of her real life and a dramatization of the book (which I would have loved to see more of as the story was quite gripping). She realizes that he was who she loved all along, and tries to meetup with him - to no avail. I think I was as lost in the “novel” as Amy Adams’ character was, and found this movie to be an amazing modern take on a noir film. 8.5/10.

I’m pretty sure this is my first time seeing a young Robert De Niro in a movie, so that was cool. He plays Travis Bickle, a lonely lil guy with insomnia (he just like me fr) who starts driving taxis in New York City. This movie is all about him seeing the downfall of society (in his perspective) and him getting lost in the sauce of delusion. Not gonna spoil it, but he goes off at the end and decides he’s the hero the city needs. Now that I think about it, this is basically the 70s version of the Joker… I really liked this movie, and can see how influential it was in the Noir genre and even other genres. Will definitely be watching this iconic movie again. 8/10.

Directed by Stanley Kubrick (you know, the moon landing guy) and based off of a legendary Stephen King novel of the same name, this movie perfected the art of horror without cheap jumpscares. Watching Jack Nickolson’s characted become increasingly unhinged, and seeing his wife and son terrified of what’s to come actually gave me goosebumps. Cinematically, this movie is perfect, there wasn’t a single scene where I thought it could have been shot better. Amazing casting, the location is godly, this is now one of my favourite movies of all time. 9.5/10.

Back again with Tarantino, this 90s classic crime thriller shows various vignettes of the lives of hitmen Jules and Vincent, showing different aspects of their lives and even a spiritual journey for one of them. The first time I watched this movie I was 14 (and possibly not sober) so this was like a first watch for me and I was hooked. Every subplot of this movie was enticing and strong enough to be it’s own project. An A-list cast for the time, with amazing plot points and excellent camerawork. Not a single complaint from me. I’m actually working on a music video heavily inspired by this film. 10/10!

Starting off with a heavy hitter, Francis Ford Coppola’s 1972 crime drama which is widely regarded as one of the greatest movies of all time… kinda fell short for me. This was my first viewing of this movie, and not saying I didn’t enjoy it, but it definitely didn’t live up to the hype behind it. I found the casting near perfect, set design and art direction was incredible, but the story and pacing is where I had some issues - it was way too long. I genuinely think at least 40 minutes could have been shaved off of this movie and the story would still be fully fleshed out. Every actor did an excellent job, but if I needed to kill 3 hours with a movie, I’d likely lean more towards a Lord Of The Rings film or even Oppenheimer. I gave this movie an 8/10, please do not “make me an offer I can’t refuse” to change my opinion - thanks!
