Slow Pitch Jigging, XL pollock with a JOKER Imp jig and Palmarius P+ power ZERO rod, rated 25 - 100g
Another short video.
It was so calm on this day I thought I'd try my new Palmarius P+ rod, it's a power zero and rated from 25 to 100g!
I was using a 120g JOKER Imp jig in 60m of water, slight tide and no wind....it was all good, I also used 20lb Sunline braid.
I've caught a lot of double figure pollock this year and the slow pitch jigging has claimed all of them!
Please check out my other videos and pop over to the JOKER online store for your jigs, lures, SPJ rods and more tackle, here's the link for that:

Just a quick clip from one of my recent charter trips onboard Silver Halo. It was a big tide and we had aa southery breeze across it. The fishing was great with loads of pollock caught and a good few fish returned too. The lures fished well but it was the JOKER Slammer in the Black Mack colour that slayed them, here you can see the comparision in size! It was a regular customer of mine, Lee, wh...

Hi thanks for asking, Im using Shimano Ocea Jigger reel, its the 1500Hg F custom and Limited models in my videos

Nice fish on the jokers again .

@@TheBassRacer yes the finer parts of my basic editing is not too bad, its the sorting out of 4 to 6 hours worth of footage each trip to get the best bits haha but hey ho
What kind of rod and reel are you using mate?
Im using Palmarius P+ jigging rods in power 0, 1 and 2 in my videos The reels are usually Shimano Ocea jiggers, 1500 size, I can provide both if you're interested? thanks for asking.
A great day fishing yesterday with some really nice large pollack with three of us hooking up at the same time on one drift a big thanks to our black max slammer jigs we got from Joker. 🎣🎣🎣
that's awesome thanks for the feedback and comment, this is why I do it, its not just for me haha
That combo is sick
Yes I love it ❤
Never seen double figures 😂
Lol, that pollock was well over 10lb, its the camera zoom on 0.5, that net is massive 😊
@@JOKERjigsandlures that's what they all say!did you weigh it?thought not!7lb if urclucky
@@user-rr4gw4xs8v I dont bother weighing pollock unless they look like their over 14 - 15lb, I catch a lot of them and so do my clients, so its not really a big deal catching a 10 to 12lber. Excellent skills Matt! You made it look effortless!👍
Thanks Colin. Im keeping my drag extra tight these days, they still take a bit of line though!

Brilliant 👍, Friday we managed to get out and tried my 80 gram black max for the first time and I caught a very large wrasse on the wreck we were fishing, roll on the next trip 🎣🎣🎣
nice to hear and thanks for the comment! Thats a great jig, tight lines for next time.
Brilliant session 🎣 love to see the rod doing what it supposed to which is to bend 👏🏻👏🏻 some very nice fish and also some valuable lessons 👍🏻

@@darrenwillams3252 yes he is, the Slammers are similar lookig to a speed jig but actually have a great horizontal fall and flutter action which is deadly. They one of the best at getting down quick and stay vertical a bit longer which is critical for more hits
@@JOKERjigsandlures thanks for explaining, that’s interesting , Looking forward to trying one out ,that deep hang time is also good for Dentex /Denton in winter, I hope you guys have great season tightlines 😎🐟
thanks Darren, look forward to hearing from you in the future, tight lines too bud
Do the reels have level winds ? Great video btw
Thanks Rich, no these dont have level winds. They have a narrow spool so load fairly well, plus the level wind gear would cause a bit of drag and slow the falling jig so its not ideal really.
Every time I watch one of these videos I learn a bit more. Especially from the caption content, thanks again and keep doing them 👍
Thanks Keith, will do!
Do you have all the leader outside the rod guides when casting the jig Matt? Also, what is your preferred leader to braid knot?
No Pete my leader is a bit longer so its somewhere inside the guides. I just use an improved albright knot, theyre not the smoothest but theyre quick and really reliable for the UK waters. One thing that does help, the Palmarius P+ rods have nice wide Fuji SIC ring guides and the knot seems to just pass through with no snagging
Loving the videos, Matt!
Thanks, I appreciate your kind feedback ❤
Nice trip again with some really nice clean fish.
Thanks Paul👍
Hi Matt nice video lots of info, was that some cod i seen you catching ? cheers Paul.
Yes Paul a couple of small ones there.
Yes Pete, it was so solid. Im thinking maybe a ling? We were only drifting at around 1 knot at the time and fishing right on the wreck.
That second bust off looked a seriously big pollack or maybe a coalie. Tough to take.
Yes Rob, youve got to expect losses as its a savage enviroment, just always a double blow when there's a big fish involved. 😂
nice video matt. those wrecks have taken some tackle off us over the years, some nice fish on the joker lures again,
💞Wow🧡💙💙💙💙💙💙💙
thanks for watching
thanks matt, so well explained, looking forward to trying your jigs
thanks please let me know how you get on?
nice bro beautiful rod amazing play good for light jigging. new friend from ph. fish on
thankyou, yes I love the SPJ style, great fun.....where abouts in PH are you?
Another excellent SPJ trip Matt …lots of structure on those wrecks there . A bit odd with the pollock being so finicky. Looking forward to my next trip!👍
Thanks Colin, yes its a big wreck and theres a couple of sweet spots on it but when the fish move off them its time to search around a bit more, that can get more risky with the snags then too!
Nice one matt .Great effort and technique on the slow pitch jigs
Glad you enjoyed it Rob, thankyou
Do you guys also do fast jigging in uk?
Its not very common at all but it will work at times. I often work the Slammer jig up at speed and both pollock and bass hit them
Great video and plenty to learn 👍🏻 looking at your rod I can see that the guides half way through are facing down . Doesn’t the line scrub into the rod?
thanks for the comment, no the line is kept off the rod nicely, they are spaced correctly to avoid rubs and this spiral wrapping can help with reducing rod twist and line wraps on the tip. A bit weird to look at but once you get used to it its good
@@JOKERjigsandlures interesting not gonna lie especially with the line wrapping around the tip which happens . I’ll give it a go 👍🏻
Hope you find the benefits are real! 😎👍
£400 for a reel, ouch. any tips on a cheaper one? :)
The Ocea actually retails at around £470 in the UK! Crazy money but they are really nice reels. Cheaper options could be the Gomexus but that gets mixed reviews, its a good starter though, there's is also a new reel by Savage Gear SGS that could be worth a look, thats £290ish, but Ive not tried one yet?
nice one matt. hopefully see a few cod on those jigs this summer .
for sure, will be here in more numbers anytime now really matey
When getting hung up on a sticky bottom, I don't use my SPJ rod to try and get the jig unstuck. I use my hand and give the line some quick tugs and allow the line to get limp in between pulls. The rod doesn't allow for the line to loosen or tighten quickly, which usually frees the jigs from bottom, for me.
yes I know what you mean but I really worry about putting my rod down when snagged on the bottom while the boat is drifting. Even when you give yourself some slack line to work with, its just too easy to get tight and find your rod in a dangerous situation, the tips can snap too easily! I much prefer to keep hold and try and let the jig fall out of its hook hold. If its stuck in net or rope though its probably staying there.
@@JOKERjigsandlures I don't put the rod down. I point the rod at the snag with one hand, and with the other hand, grab the line between the reel and first guide, and give it a few quick tugs. It may surprise you how well it works. I learned the technic while bass fishing a very long time ago. No lie, I've lost one jig to the bottom in 8 years of SPJ fishing.
@@andrewrollins4898 thats good going, if I can get the jig to fall off its snag in the first feww seconds its easy, if its stays stuck longer it alwaus gets harder to release but will try that. thanks 🙂
Hi Matt have you noticed which end of the lure bass and pollock prefer ? 🎣👍
I've not really thought of looking at the possible differences in the way different species may hit the jig? I know most my takes are when the jig is falling or on the bottom so its only natural that the lower hooks get most contact, especially when the jigs falling or going backwards, I think its important to have hooks there
@@JOKERjigsandlures I’m beginning to think I’ve noticed bass on the eye end of the lure more than pollock which seem to be on the opposite end of the, of course I could be wrong but I’ll keep watching 🎣👍
@@user-ol8sy2qe3c interesting, I will make a mental note once I start seeing more bass. I will say Ive had a few occasions where Ive caught 2 bass at the same time on a jig haha, 2x 5lbers one day!! 😅
Another excellent session Matt…in a short weather window how brilliant and effective the joker jigs are…shame about the loss on the last drift! That’s fishing 🎣😂
Thanks Scott, it was a busy 2 hours fishing so I will actally get 3 videos out of it! Ideal!
Hope this works as all of us of an age know the fish stocks are in dire straits !!!
it may work and there's no harm in trying. feedback Ive received was that the eggs and milt could be mixed before adding the water?
hi matt, great explained video, just bought some of those slammers 3 or 4 days ago, i should have asked first - what do you recommend 130gram or your 170gram on those wrecks, i have a boat in lymme bay and the wrecks i fish over are roughly 120 to 180 feet deep, i bought 6 170 grams, hopefully i have not gone too heavy, thanks
Hi Adrian, thanks for the comment and the recent purchase. So the depths we find in Lyme are good for anything between about 120g to 220g, it all depends on the wind and size of the tide. My most common weights are the 150g Imp and the 170g Slammer as theres often a breeze effecting the boat slightly. On a really calm day with a smaller or slow tide you can drop to a lower weight, but if the jig is streaming away quickly when its a bit breezy then you may find that the 200g Slammer is better. Its always nice to go as light as possible, but your rod and braid need to suit the jig and the jig suit the conditions and depth. i do like using the 120g /130g sizes when I can.
@@JOKERjigsandlures thanks for the reply matt, very helpful

@@JOKERjigsandlures hopefully soon matt .

Smashing video Matt will there be various weights of that new jig ?
yes all the Slammers are available in 80g, 100g, 130g, 170g and 200g. The new Black Mack and Pink Glow are the new ones and expected in month or so, fingers crossed
hi matt, 2 questions - those slammers are they better when the tide is flowing faster so they dart down quicker rather than a flutter? the other question - hooks top and bottom, i would worry about it snagging on the wreck as it will be twice more likely to snag - i guess you can fish this way with hooks top and bottom drifting towards to the wreck - then as you are about to drift above the wreck you then wind up 10m to avoid hitting the wreck using the coloured braid which changes colour every 10m? but dont drop a jig with hooks top and bottom right on top of the wreck. thanks
Hi Adrian, sorry about my late reply I didnt get a notification! So in answer to your questions..... jigs can fish well anytime there are fish about but often better WITH tide as fish are just more active then and hitting other bait fish more! Its a bit of a myth that jigs are for neap and slack, yes they do get fish then, but youll also find every pout wants a go too! The action of the jig is not effected by the tide if your line is vertical to it, thats how you get the best action and hook up rate. The vertical time is ofetn reduced in a bigger tide if the boat is not running with the tide well, for example if the breeze of chop are effecting the boats drift. So we use a streamling jig and good braid to compensate and help stay vertical, also drop in at the right time so your vertical for the fish holding zone, not 20m before or after it. FYI bass and cod often prefer the fluttering falling jigs (JOKER Imp and Mayhem) and pollock the sliding, flat falling jigs (JOKER Slammer)...but its not a strict rule. Hooks top and bottom: yes you use the braid to understand the jigs location in the water and over structure, its really all part of SPJ and very useful. Ideally you will stop your jig 1m above a snaggy wreck but its almost impossible to do that and if your on an area with less snags its ok to drop it onto the wreck. Fish will pick the jig up off the bottom so its a choice you have to make depending on where your fishing. I will risk the extra snags for the extra fish and if your expecting it to hit the jig just be super quick in getting it off again. Its also more important to have the lower hooks on a longer jig, fish often hit the jig as its falling or sliding backwards and they will get hooked on those lower hooks then. Over the couple of weeks Ive posted up 3 new videos that mention braid, timings and drop in? I hope it all helps! Cheers Matt
@@JOKERjigsandlures thanks again for the reply, such a helpful chap sending me this well explained reply, you oviousily like to help people, i will hang onto this message and remember it, and yes i have just viewed the latest video so thanks for making and sending that video.out to us all.
