Listen to Classic Radio Shows From time passed by and let your imagination run wild.
The Golden Age of Radio, also known as the old-time radio era, was an era of radio programming in which radio was the dominant electronic home entertainment medium. It began with the birth of commercial radio broadcasting in the early 1920s and lasted through the 1960s, when television gradually superseded radio as the medium of choice for scripted programming, variety, and dramatic shows.

Destination Freedom (1950) (037) 1951-06-23 Wanted A Witness
Destination Freedom is a treasure trove of rich storytelling that delves deep into the African American experience. Let's explore it further. Richard Durham, the genius behind the show, crafted each episode with a profound sense of purpose. He didn't just want to entertain; he aimed to educate and inspire listeners to reflect on societal issues.
One of the most compelling aspects of the show was how it highlighted both famous and unsung heroes. For instance, episodes featuring figures like Paul Robeson and Sojourner Truth didn't just recount their achievements-they delved into their personal struggles and the systemic challenges they overcame. Durham's writing brought these historical figures to life, making their stories resonate on a deeply human level.
What's also fascinating is how Destination Freedom subtly pushed against the racial barriers of its time. During an era when segregation was rampant and media representation was scarce or stereotypical, the show presented Black characters with depth, intelligence, and complexity. It was revolutionary in challenging the narratives that mainstream media often perpetuated.
The show's influence extends beyond its original run. It set a precedent for future generations of storytellers and activists. The way it fused art with advocacy can be seen in modern mediums like podcasts, spoken word poetry, and socially conscious cinema. Creators today continue to build on that foundation, using storytelling as a catalyst for change.
Have you considered how the themes from Destination Freedom are still relevant today? The quest for equality, representation, and justice remains at the forefront of societal discourse. It's a reminder that while progress has been made, there's still a journey ahead.

Hey, now, if you're going to play some Bob and Ray, play something interesting and funny. Like the president of the slow talker's club and such?
Glad to have these still around
✴️🙏😎🌹‼️ YOU ARE A BLESSING. THANKS❤ ENJOYING IN PEACE
Unfortunately the audio needs work 😢
Came from tv girl
Thank you for posting this. Use to listen to it yearly on Christmas then lost it. This helps immensely!
You're very welcome!
As heard on Sundays at 8pm(et). Despite the announcements, "THE SIX SHOOTER" continued on Sundays through March 21, 1954- then, it moved to Thursdays [8:30pm(et)], beginning on April 1st (replacing "FATHER KNOWS BEST")......but not in New York, as WNBC-AM pre-empted it with a local music and interview show, "MEET ME AT KAY'S", featuring singer Kay Armen and "comedy relief" Louis Nye.
Cooll😮
According to wikipedia, this was the last radio broadcast of the long running radio series "Duffy's Tavern" (it began in 1941). THANKS very much for uploading for us to enjoy. One of my all time fave programs from Radio's Golden Age. CHEERS! 👍🤓
Thanks for the info!
Do you have AFRS Jubilee program #170, featuring Charlie Barnet, Lena Horne and Erroll Garner?
Hi sorry I do not have that episode but have added to my list to fine
I listened to Chuck starting in the mid 80s until the show went off the air. Great, great show, largely responsible for making me, raised on country and Bluegrass, a fan of the big bands. Please someone post more Swingin' Years!
As heard on Sundays at 8pm(et). Dick Beals is "Johnny"; Howard McNear is "Eb"; Will Wright is "Jake"; Eleanor Audley is "Aunt Millie".
29:07- Actually, "THE SIX SHOOTER" continued on Sundays through March 1954 (because "FATHER KNOWS BEST" was extended for another 13 weeks [even though it was pre-empted in New York for a local program, "MEET ME AT KAY'S"]; "THE SIX SHOOTER" replaced it on Thursdays at 8:30pm, beginning on April 1st).
This was Bing's final half-hour radio Christmas program. The following year, he was on for 15 minutes every weeknight with an informal musical interlude {no audience- just him, Ken Carpenter and the Buddy Cole combo}.
Chuck Cecil was the best DJ of all time. He was more knowledgeable than any disc jockey I've ever heard before or since. My father and I used to listen to the Swingin Years Saturday afternoons in the late 70's on KMJ outta Fresno, Ca. Thanks for posting these great memories. Happy Holidays 🌲
So glad., to have this back In my life
😊
Good one. I don’t remember hearing it before.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
