I met him in NYC when he came into the store I worked in called Canal Jeans circa 1989.We both were wearing overalls, belted at the waist rolled up hems, I had on Dr Martens, and Patrick wore Chucks, I had a beanie cap, and Patricia had on a beanie cap. Patrick and I both looked each other up and down and started laughing, we looked exactly alike except i didn't have a beard. I was a fashion student at the time and complimented his work. He was so gracious. He is an African American fashion designer who should be celebrated along with Willi Smith and Stephen Burrows.

I was there that night. Great memories...

One of my assignments for my Parsons Streetwear Essentials class brought me here and I'm so glad bc I'm LIVING for every moment of this. Patrick Kelly had Black models in every shade and the clothes are STUNNING! He was a true artist.

My last of high school was in 87 at Overbrook high school and I had a sewing class my first three periods of school and my teacher whom I don’t remember her name used to rave about Wili Smith, but at that time the only Will Smith I knew was a prior school mate of mine Will “ Fresh Prince” Smith. So it’s very cool to see this video of Willi Smith the famous fashion designer from my Alma Mater Overbrook High. He was a legend fo sho.

I was lucky enough too meet him in what was once known as Soho in NYC, he was nice, inspiring, and we both were wearing overalls and converse, his uniform of choice. Peace Mr. Patrick Kelly.

Wow, that music was horrible ...but the memoirs I cherish , he was the one black designer I knew of w/I was in high school , and the only reason I felt there was a place for me in the fashion industry at 18 yo in 1978. . My graduation suit from design school was a Willi Wear suit I had saved up to get and wore w/pride. That was actually my first of very few real designer garments I owned. Most of the black designers now are so full of hype/ pomp and circumstance , and their work forgettable not to mention disposable.

Rip Willie he was my First Cousin very Talented and hilarious that was our Grandmother Nana I worked for Willie in 77 in shipping and receiving and taking clothes on those long Racks to high end stores I appreciated the opportunity being from Philly NY was hard I eventually went into Coast Guard and went back from lived there7 years his nickname in the family Darnell to my grandmother Punzel Rip Willie
