An Old Friend Returns After Many Years Of Absence
This male fox, who we called 'Broken Tail' used to be a regular visitor to our property 3-4 years agoi. He was in a poor state health wise because he had a bad case of 'Mange'. I was treating his Mange when one day he stopped visiting when a nearby Housing development flattened his den.
While his overal condition is still on the poor side, he seems to have recovered from his Mange and for a elderly fox, he seems to be surviving quite well.

Last night was very cold indeed, the trail cam recorded -4C but it was colder than this. The Badgers are staying put inside their sett, venturing out only when nessasary. The foxes on the other hand must brave the cold every night, and last night was no exception. In this clip we see the Vixen making the most of the free dog food, earlier the Helper Fox also called by. *Recording Equipment* 1. ...

how old do you think he is?
❤
whats the difference between Solitary, helper and the vixen foxes?
In this instance the Helper Fox (Vixen) is identified as being part of the family of foxes that are regular visitors to this area, it helps to identify this particular fox from it's mother who is also a Vixen.
waiting his turn or waiting for rats?
I like the longer videos too ❤
I'm glad to hear this, there is a LOT of interesting clips I've had to leave out previously when I just use a few seconds of recordings from a whole evening of recordings, this way everyone gets to see them all.
So cute! This is neat.
poor baby
Tree fruit?
Dog meat balls, the foxes and badgers love these!
Thank you for sharing such amazing footage! And thank you (on behalf of the badgers) for the delicious food! Lol they didn't come up for air. 😂
These guys have spent a lot of time hunkered down in their sett because of the fireworks, so this snack will have helped them 'catch-up' on lost scavenging time. The foxes on the other hand were able to cope better than the Badgers, they were out every night scavenging as normal.
@Whiskers_Wings Oh, right! Guy Fawkes Day. It's not celebrated in the US or canada (tho apparently it used to be until 100 years ago or so). Most people here have never heard of it, apart from the film _V For Vendetta_ . I don't blame the badgers for hiding from the noise, fireworks, fire crackers, bonfires, etc.
@@ThePrairieChronicles Guy Fawkes Day ( celebrates the failure of a plot against the English government in 1605) is still celebrated in Canada (province of Newfoundland and Labrador) as well as in South Africa, and Australia. The Film V For Vendetta is one of my top ten loved films.
@Whiskers_Wings I've never been to Nfld / Lab. I had no idea they still mark GF Day. I learn something new (at least one thing) every time I chat with you. Thank you.
@@ThePrairieChronicles I must confess, I did'nt know this either, but wanted to see if anywhere else celebrated Guy Fawkes Day besides the UK so I google'd it :-)
maybe he knows its day light savings today. lol
Lol He/She could'nt pass up this unexpected treasure of peanuts before bedtime. Our Vixen is also active at this time, so it's a dangerous time to be out on the ground at this time of evening.
Special thanks to the magpie for this video's soundtrack.
Do you think he used his ears or his eyes to detect and track that rat? To me he heard it first for sure. how dark is it at this spot?
I would like to add that Parts 1,2 and 3 all recorded in the same evening demonstrate some mind blowing concepts from both the foxes and our resident Tawny Owl. Such as, how did the Tawny Owl 'know' exactly where to find this dead rat (45 minutes after it was killed by the fox) since the rat never moved, thereby movement didnt trigger the owl's senses. Another question we could ask is how did the Vixen 'know' there was a dead rat waiting for it by the bushes, four hours after it's mate killed it!. That whole area is used by badgers, foxes, (live) rats etc so there are many different scents covering that whole area but it still went to eat that dead rat!. Another question, still related to the vixen is that she was able to clearly identify a new scent from the Tawny Owl that had sat on the water bowl 2 hours previously from all the other scents in that area!.
The remarkable thing about this clip is not only that the female fox located the dead rat left by her mate four hours earlier but also her ability to detect the lingering scent of a Tawny Owl that had perched on the water bowl just two hours before. Despite the water bowl being used by various animals like crows, magpies, squirrels, and badgers on a daily basis, the vixen was still able to identify the unfamiliar scent of the owl. This suggests that she possesses a highly sensitive olfactory system capable of distinguishing between even subtle scents that she might not have previously encountered. Her keen interest in the exact spot where the owl had sat further emphasizes her remarkable ability to track and interpret scents in her environment.
Indeed, a very interesting little saga. Amazing how interconnected a single event like the killing of the rat becomes.
That's a rabbit not a mouse ^ and a gorgeous cat
01:27 3 feet to the right of the fox looks like another rat jumped up
Well spotted! I didnt notice the second rat jumping up until you pointed it out. In previous clips to the one your seeing there are indeed two rats taking turns to run up to the food bowl for some peanuts!. When foxes are nearby these two rats always hide in the bushes but, I can often see them when they stand on their hind legs because the light from my trail cam lights up their eyes like neon sign!.
the tension is palpable
A few minutes later the male fox arrives and starts eating the tidbits in the bowl while this same black cat is still waiting for the rat to appear. The cat then shortly gets up and moves on. I didnt show that clip because nothing else happened.
hey that was so cool! he made the same sound when he ran through
You can tell who's the boss here.
Crows and rats are more smarter tham peolple think so...
You go girl!
Good Owlie, prolly feeding his or her nestlings
Bait?
Just tidbits for the foxes.
such a polite gentleman
❤
If you liked seeing this Badger, I have a 3 part series of the whole family enjoying a evening meal together.
Badgers look so cute
My guess is the badgers would turn that foxie into floor rag.
Yes they would if they could catch up with it.
The fox was like “hell no” 😅
So, did he leave and pick up some better fox lovin'??? Just askin for a friend.
Poor male fox, he try's very hard to please her and when she snaps at him he will often move to the side and wait for her finish off what tidbits are on offer then follow on after her.
Looks like a tawny owl!
On further investigation this is indeed a Tawny Owl, and from the noises it makes at night it's a Male Owl.
Maybe a Tawny Owl? 🤔🦉
Yes, It's a adult male Tawny Owl. :-)
❤
It sound impossible but wish i can have a pet fox, they are amazing, but well they need alot of space and care
In Britain it is not illegal to keep a Red fox (Vulpes vulpes) as a pet. It is, however, ill-advised as wild-caught foxes typically do not make good pets. They can be boisterous, destructive and posess a very strong smell.
@@Whiskers_Wings so a regular orange cat haha
@@accelerator8558 Indeed so. Even when they are fully grown they are not that much taller than a cat, though much longer in length when you add in their majestic fluffy tail.
@@Whiskers_Wings I was cheking and sadly here where I live a special permit is needed and alot of space.
@@accelerator8558 While I can see why people might want a fox as a pet, they do have a lot of charm to them after-all, but keeping them as pets would change their natural behaviour that we all love about them into a somewhat tame version of a domesticated dog. That's just my opinion.
Beautiful.
thanks for sharing all these videos!
i'm glad that you enjoy these as much as I do. There will be many more to come!
❤
So.....they ate ceramic now?
The original light-weight 'bowl' was a large plastic plant-pot container which was stolen the next night by this same fox and to this day, I haven't been able to find it. Hence the heavy clay bowl which it's already tried to pick up but a little too heavy for it! lol
@@Whiskers_Wings so they ate plastic hahaha
foxes and badgers will hunt together
Imagine having to watch out for your life when you're trying to eat. It's a hard world.
S/he’s thinking “it’s raining?” (too hungry to notice)❤
May I ask what food do you give to the foxes? I have a variety coming to my garden every night. Unfortunately, I no longer feed them meat as it attracts cats. At the moment I feed them cheese cut up into small pieces and two eggs. I've been feeding them eggs for years and they seem to love them!
Foxes are omnivorous and will eat a wide diversity of foods, though it's important to never try and hand feed them and dont try to over-feed them as they will try and cache the food else where.. My foxes (and badgers) love unsalted peanuts (large bags bought from B&M) and I also give them three or four hand fulls of Earls Moist & Meaty Dog food (bought from Aldi) which I have yet to see a cat eat and of course any table scraps. Cats generally avoid most tins of dog food. I also always provide freash water each day as foxes love to wizz in food & water bowls before they leave the area.
Dear soul.. 💕
Looks likw the shaft of an arrow
I pray this is not the case!
did he just whiz in his drinking water at the end? yikes
Yes, the foxes pretty much all do this before leaving the area, they are marking their territory, which only effects other foxes as badgers ignore these markers completly. Hence why I always need to wash the bowl out before putting in fresh water each and every day.
Porcupine quill?
Porcupines are found in America, Africa, Asia and parts of Europe but not native to the United Kingdom. It's a mystery what this is and how it got there.
Cutie❤
Oh no! I hope the fox gets better.
Thank you for feeding this poor little guy. Hopefully it gives him some strength to recover. So many ways to get hurt out there. ❤
He has hurt his leg before and got better, so I'm hoping he will get better this time too.
Beautiful woodpecker really nice green feathers
By the looks of it, this looks like a youngish woodpecker as it's colours are not yet bright as the ones I've seen online.
I hope that sweet fox got some munchies, too.
The fox is usually first at the bowl before anyone else. so it's not missing out on anything. In fact the fox will often will lay down within eye sight of the bowl waiting for any rat that tries to grab any left-overs!
That fox was more polite than most of the people in my country. I'm from China.
Welcome @digitalife8719 - Like most wild animals, including those pesky house cats, they learn very quickly that you dont mess with hedgehogs, those prickly spines are very sharp! A fox or badger would have to be starving before they would think about tackling these creaturss.
@@Whiskers_Wings Thanks :) so even in wild life, there is plenty of fair rules to keep everything balanced. Another thing better than China.
Fox: "That could be my meal if only...."
Yep, if only!. The way Hedgehogs run around all over the place they have no fear from any of the local animals.
