Slave Knight Gael - boss theme (8-bit version)
First things first, *SORRY* my fight footage doesn't perfectly match up with the phases!
This has taken a great deal of effort, partly due to my general paucity of skill and partly due to the fact this is an EPIC of a piece. A lot of chipping away when I had the spare time. This was much harder than O+S!
In the middle of the process I shifted from a free version of Cubase I was using to my Mac Pro which I use to make normal compositions on, because I was concerned at how hard it would be to track alongside the more complex music without having it in the project, and also because I am faster using Logic than Ableton. This experience has certainly been an excellent opportunity for ‘ear training’. I suppose in all I took about 120 hours to put this together. And it has been sitting in various versions on my computer since I did the Ornstein and Smough one (though I completed the majority of the work in three weeks of hard work).
Yuka put an incredible number of runs in this piece, as she usually does, and there’s a lot of hard-to-hear stuff. I do believe that it was probably in some ways easier to write this piece of music in the first place than work out the notes listening back! I have done my best, and certainly have not got it right in some places, but I wanted to try reasonably hard to give a real impression of the complexity of the music. Although I have enjoyed the other covers on UA-cam I felt they were lacking the level of complexity that Yuka put into the work.
This is my favourite piece of music in a video game ever, which is really something as I am a giant fan of Nobuo Uematsu. And yes he would feature multiple times in my top 10, but this is my number 1 piece. It is so evocative of the fight, it has three incredible phases, it fits the spirit of Gael perfectly, and it is an absolute treat for someone who enjoys pieces with detail in them.
A particular focus I placed was on the less ‘flashy’ bits. There are parts of the piece where, due I guess to the difficulty of balancing orchestral instruments, it is possible to lose fantastic elements. So I brought up the volumes and occasionally added a little creativity or beefing up certain bits, but I tried to avoid any artistic licence where I could clearly hear what was happening. I do this ‘rebalancing’ a lot in the second phase, and I am very pleased with the result.
A remarkable thing is how LITTLE copy and pasting happens in this piece. It is just pure effort from Yuka. Definitely inspiring and instructive for me. It is always a temptation for any composer to rely on repeats. So many of the violin runs are ‘one-and-dones’ in this piece, and the same thing goes for the choral work. That’s just incredible devotion to making a memorable and stunning composition.
If anyone has any suggestions for future ones that would be great. Plus if anyone has any pixel art they would want to be featured on the next one please send me a message.
I am also interested in writing for any video game projects, free of charge as this is my hobby (I'm a lawyer by trade). Point anyone who is making a game to me, preferably something with boss themes in! I store my compositions in 'Doug's composing showcase'. See here for an imagined piece for 'Bloodborne 2': ua-cam.com/video/97rpUlwG1AM/v-deo.html
Thanks.

Ornstein and Smough - boss theme (8-bit version)
Переглядів 55 тис.5 років тому
Dragonslayer Ornstein and Executioner Smough from Dark Souls by Hidetaka Miyazaki. One of the greatest boss fights in all the Soulsborne series, which happens to have one of the greatest soundtracks too. It started with Sean's pixel art, which was assembled piece by piece in a pixel art editor, and then Doug used a midi editor (Ableton Live Lite) to put together note by note an approximation of...
Awesome job, I'd love to hear an extended version of this
Pikachu and snorelax

Excellent work
You know a song is good when it can consistently make you cry, no matter what form it takes and how many years have passed...

love this!
Hey. I’m glad it didn’t crash while playing the soundtrack. Could you imagine if our retro games had music this intense?!
Beautiful!
Wow the first phase sounded so cool then the second phase picked it up more! Thus was really cool to listen to! Excellent work!
Thank you for making this
this is amazing! great work
The 8-bit version is phenomenal
Great video

Wow this actually gave me goosebumps.
Nice
Haha this is awesome. Very nicely done
*low quality pain *
This reminds me of classic legendary Pokemon music. ❤
I like the fact that all 3 Ds player characters are here. Chosen undead Bearer of the curse And the Ashen one Cause ornstien is just so iconic within the souls series he got to be a boss in all 3 games lol
@rayhanrehemaputra1719Dragonslayer Armor
amazing!!
pretty sick
🤘 awesome
this is super awesome. I would love to hear more from you
Thanks man, got some more in the pipeline!
Hi sorry, I had a kid. But once he starts sleeping properly I will do more. I want to start with one piece from each game, so ER, Sekiro, Ds2, DeS, and BB. Do you have any suggestions?
@@8-bitds263I don't think you have to say sorry for not being active if it's because you've had a kid lmao, best wishes for the little man! that said, I think either Fortissax's theme or Godrick's would be super interesting to listen to in this style. I love Midir's theme, but imo it would be cooler to cover something other than Ringed City first
Oscar is pretty cute, ngl, Nohomo
There's just a quality you get from 8 bit that makes the music some of the most memorable experiences ever.
Couldn't agree more. I do miss it. Back in the Megaman/Castlevania/Final Fantasy days and whatnot.
@8-bit DS oh my God yes. For me I always get nostalgic with the music of Final Fantasy II and any castlevania game, although my favorite is definitely super castlevania IV, despite that being 16 bit lol.
@@8-bitds263 hey is this copyright free
@@8-bitds263 its for a game
Now do the 8-bit version of the mix with space jam theme
Excellent job man this is insane
Thanks bro I appreciate it
This mf made a masterpiece and left. What a legend
It reminds me of king of the storm ost
No smough :'( Bte, I like how he put Choosen Undead, Bear Of The Curse and Ashen One
its not the ashen one, it is the soul of cinders. Ashen one's default armor is the default knight armor
I want you to notice how big Ornstein is
Omg this reminds me of final fantasy reference 1 to 3 🤩😍
MegaLondo
Seem like megaman zero LOL
Me encanta 😉😉
Que bueno
I'm going to kill the two mother fuckers who disliked the video

@@SuperToaster25 oh no...
Ornstein in the image are like 5 times bigger than elite knight so smoght is just huge
Super Ornstein is here, The pain and suffering we go through for that final ring of the four knights.
Smough is dead it's time to fight Super Ornstein
Patches with the one dislike
And send you down the aby... catacombs*
