what to expect from the KODAK GOLD film stock | beginner photographer review
Thank you. A very good and honest video. I love Ektar 100 for its sharpness, colors, rendering of highlights and shadows. However, I don't use it anymore. Simply too slow for my style of photography. I need f8 with a 28 or 35 or 75mm lens to get enough depth of field. Too often this means long shutter speeds. The film is so expensive that the first shot needs to be right.
I just ordered a 5 pack (black friday deal) and was curious to how it is, thanks for showing those street shots since that's what I mostly do. I mainly use vision3 film stocks so the low iso and fast pace of street makes me think this film might be worth pushing +1, probably going to try the first roll at 200 iso and see how it goes, worse comes to worse I got some decent portrait stock since it looks good!
Great Video, awesome Pictures - Thanks for this Video and your Content in general !!
I enjoyed your opinion
The Minolta X700 isn’t just great for beginners, it’s an excellent camera.
Here in Argentina this film stock is very popular because of its good price and fidelity. I only shoot black and white with Fomapan 100 sometimes pushed to 400 (which I think looks awesome). It usually gets mistreated or really played down by US or European film youtubers. I don't understand the criticisms it recieves when compared to more "expensive" film stocks like Ilford Pan 400 or hp5 or kodak tmax 400. I think Fomapan 100 holds up really really well against these other stocks. It's sharp, fine grain, nice contrast (which can be adjusted to whatever you like when scanning), great latitude, cheap... what more do you need.
My favourite current film is XP2. It has relatively fine grain and can be developed fast by any laboratory because it uses the C41 colour film process.
I just purchased one of these and I'm looking forward to getting back into film photography. It should be a step up from the X-370 that I bought new in the 80's. Thanks for the review.
I just wanted to say a big thank you for your very detailed and interesting description.
I really like the Pro Image 100. I first discovered it in the 90s. It was made in Mexico for the South American market. Wedding photographers used it a lot and was cheap compared to other films. It's not meant to be a Portra 160, or a Gold 200. As you mentioned, maybe something in between. The best one for me was the Fuji REALA 100, discontinued many years ago. Thanks for sharing.
I strongly recomend you to try ILFORD ORTHO PLUS 80 ISO for portraits ...A Relentless film... it tells you everything you've photographed... not less and not more ...
Well, I have shot alot of this film and I can confidently say my copy is anything but warm.. it's a cool film that is less saturated with a greens in the shadow just like a fujifilm.. it has some resemblance to Orwo 500 ( albeit better )
Very cool, thank you! I’ll have to try it at some point. Would love to see some film reviews of Rollei Retro 80S, and Ferrania P30 😊📷❤️
You really showed that gold 200 brings out the vibrant colors and gives its unique touch to every photo! Great work!
I’ve been using my Minolta X-700 for a while, and it’s never let me down. It’s cool to see how others like you make the most of it. Nice video!
I’ve got the same Minolta X-700, and it’s my favorite camera! Love seeing others appreciate it as much as I do. Great shots in this video!
I shoot this it’s all I can afford lol
Congrats on 1000! Kodak Gold in 120 is really nice, I think. I recently shot it with a Yashica A TLR for a video, and I thought the film was great.
As someone who has been shooting film for over 50 years, I give you an alternative question, is any film worth the asking prices these days? My answer is a resounding no. Even the cheap low quality stuff like Foma have increased nearly three folds in the last 5 years. Kodak pricing is now absolutely ridiculous. As far as I know no new research and development into new emulsions is taking place anywhere, so our latest films are nearly two decades old, and even then they were just reformulations to decrease the silver content and replace them with dyes. But we do carry on. What else can we do but pay the asking prices or ditch thousands of £s or $s of precious film camera, lenses and equipment and put our fate in the 'digital' or in a better word computer imagery? PS: It was reputed that Kodak formulated the Ektar after the outcry of stopping the production of Kodachrome transparency films. Take that as you wish, but the punchy and staurated colours of Ektar and in particular the very mild magenta cast does remind me of Kodachrome 64 Pro of the same era, but the Ektar has the advantage of a couple of extra stops of dynamic range. What it doesn't have is the archival qulaity of Kodachrome as Kodachrome in essence was a triple layer emulsion each sensitive to a primary colour and to which dyes were added at a later stage. I know it doesn't exist anymore, but if you ever saw well executed Cibachrome print of a Kodachrome transparency, you would never ever look at digital again. A thing of extraordinary beauty that is sadly no more...
Nice work. I used to work in Blackpool. It makes a nice change to see a photographer openly and honestly capturing the fun of the place. So many try to jump on the dystopian bandwagon of it being a town full of drunks, druggies, etc. There are so many seaside resorts around the British coastline that have a kind of “faded glory” about them, especially out of season, and this film seems to have the ideal colour palette for capturing them. You could spend a lifetime doing it!
Everybody says not to use ektar for portraits but it’s my favorite portrait film stock. All of my best portraits are on Ektar
I have seen some beautiful portraits shot on Ektar, at the end of the day I think it comes down to the skill and if you know how to work with it (which is not my case yet after one roll, I must say!) But I don't doubt that your portraits on Ektar are stunning, I hope to shoot it again soon, and maybe get some better results :)
Ektar was reputedly formulated to mimick Kodachrome 25, which it didn't TBH, not even close. Ask Steve McCurry if he used Kodachrome for portraiture?
i love ektar. my go to color films are ektachrome and ekar. portra is boring, ektachrome has a narrow dynamic range, but ektar is forgiving to overexposure and warm with amazing reds. you're right, for people it can be weird to skin in sun, unless it's melanated skin then omg it's beautiful. use it tons in medium format too.
I really want to try in medium format soon! I was blown away by how beautiful the colours were 🤩 I completely understand that it is your fave! And you're so right, I can really see how it would be stunning with deeper skin tones 😍
Congratulations on the 1,000 subscriber milestone! Kodak Gold is a great, versatile stock.
Thank you so much! I saw you recently passed the 10k benchmark, congratulations to you! It's super inspiring :)
Woohoo!! 1000+ subs!! 🎉🎈🥳🎇 Love your videos, keep it up and before you know it you'll be at 10k+
Thank youuuu ! And thank you for always watching! It means so much :) 🤗 🤗
I havent shot Gold in 120 format but I recently picked up a box. Looking forward to shooting it very soon. Love your channel and Im subscribed.
Thank you for the sub 🤗 and yes can't wait to see what you think about the 120 format, I really loved my experience shooting it!
Thank you for the video! As italian I appreciate the photos of mozzarella and cappuccino! 😁 But, remember, never togheter in the same meal...😅
That would be a disgrace! 😁😁 I love Italy, I used to go there a lot when I was younger now I am hoping to go back soon with my camera 🇮🇹
@@exploring_analog yeesss! 😁👍🤌🤌🤌
Kodak Gold is one of if not THE most classic film stock out there. This was the film that most childhood photos were taken on along with Kodak Ultramax (formerly called Max Versatility). The photos featured on this video were good.
Thank you ! And I agree 100% such a classic!
Nice photos. I just put a roll of kodak gold in 120 in my Holga. The fuji film out now is supposedly Kodak Gold and Kodak Ultramax and made by Kodak. If it says made in the USA then it is Kodak.
spot on! I made a video comparing the new fuji to kodak ultramax a couple months back. It is very similar. Shot them both back to back to compare and yep, almost the same!
Fujifilm c400 and c200 are not ultramax and gold.. it so annoying having everyone follow one wrong person and repeating it all over.. they have no similarity at all... I wonder where the notion came from.. if you want to test it, get you both and shoot the same scene at the same time under the same lighting and have it scanned by a standard lab and not NLP
Ok genius. It isso annoying you saying that since you didn't give an answer what it is and who makes it. It is made in the US so where in the US do they make film other than Kodak??
I love your voice and congrats
Oooh thank you so much 🤍
Congrats. Thanks for the review and pics. Nice colors. I’ll have to try it with my slr and tlr.
Thank you for watching :) Let me know how you like it once you've shot it!
Dave from Flic Film ignores my emails about a broken product I ordered and returned
I do think the comparison shots for portrait use were a little misleading. The Ektar example had the subject lit by fill in light reflected from the green grass.. wheras the Gold film shot had the model receiving fill in light off the warm brown wood of the bench. Scanning correction for the green content in the Ektar shot may well produce unflattering rendition of the skin in more directly lit areas of her skin.
Thank you so much for this comment, this is actually super insightful. I am not used to shooting portraits at all, so I don't think I have given this a fair shot, and didn't take into account these factors. You are right, just having the same model in the same spot does not mean the conditions are the same. Really appreciate the explanation and will keep this in mind next time :)
Glad to see your channel back in my feed !!
Wow! So glad to se YOU here in my comments Thomas!! Thank you for stopping by 🤗🤗
I appreciate those shots of the building filled with windows. Really cool in my opinion as well. Glad you went for it with those shots and discovered a film that captured what you wanted to convey. Well done.
Thank you for your comment :) Exactly! didn't think the photos would come out this good on this film. I was worried that I shot too many, cause I tend to snap one quick photo and move on, but I was stunned when I saw the scans and glad I took multiple !
finally a video on a b&w film stock!😁 i am so happy! Maybe the washi has ispired you, because I love your b&w photos, more than the color ones. In particular the one with the lady with pigeons and the one with the fountain. You should shoot more in b&w 😉
Yes BW film stocks are rare on my channel, I m still a bit intimidated by them haha! Guess I need more practice to feel more comfortable. But they are great because they make me think about the photos I take differently. different thought process. But I will have more coming I promise 🤝
@@exploring_analog I think was Cartier-Bresson said that he used to shoot in b&w because he didn't want worry about colors too...😉 Anyway, I developed my first film stock in b&w and, I know can be silly, but seing that analog photos in b&w touched me...🙄 As you said, is another way to create photos
I am an art/experimental photographer. With that being said I use a film for it's quirkiness, unpredictability and happy accidents. And the reason I am strictly a film Schooter.Such as I cannot wait to Try Harmon phoenix for it's orange cast. I know many will try it and then edit it to take the orange out. I never understood that. Just as many film photographers would rather rather pull highlights out in editing instead of using a fill flash, reflector, open up the fstop or use lower shutter speeds. As my late uncle said who was a photographer. Get it right the first time in the camera .
I just bought a 35mm and 120 roll of Phoenix and can't wait to shoot it. I agree with your uncle's sentiment (also maybe because I am bad at editing and I always find the results better when I don't mess with the colours). It's also one of the main reason why I prefer film, I love discovering the unique life that each film stock brings to the photos and find it funny how many "film aesthetic" presets there are for digital photographs... nothing beats what film brings to the photos in my personal opinion :)
thank you
Thank you for watching :)
I agree with your sentiments on being pleasantly surprised by Ektar. I normally prefer to shoot slide films like Velvia and sometimes Ekatachrome, so I was quite surprised to find Ektar as pleasing as it was, I don't shoot portraiture as much so I don't mind the richer colors. While the look is not really similar, the overall effect is kind of similar to Velvia, where many would not use it for portraits but it's great for everything else, and I don't mind taking the occasional portrait on these color-rich films too.
I haven't shot slide films myself (stuck in my CN comfort zone haha!) but I do see how the Ektar can be quite close as far as the overall effect goes. Shooting the Ektar made me very impatient to dip my toes into slide films too. Thank you for your comment, it is great to have input from someone who is very familiar with slide film!
For decades I shot with Kodachrome 64 and 200 and eventually Fujichrome RVP . Once youve shot with Velvia, nothing else will do and it is now too expensive. I've switched to Black and White and have my 6x17 Fujichrome transparencies in safe storage, grateful to have lived and photographed with such gorgeous film. Color neg is not a sufficient nor satisfactory replacement.
Oh man.. the Velvia is indeed super expensive, but I do want to try it. I haven't shot slide film yet, slowly gearing up towards that. So lucky that you got to photograph such beautiful film, it's a shame how many have disappeared. But hopefully with the renewed interest in film photography one or two will come back some day. crazier things have happened 🤞
Only shot Velvia from around 1997 to 2010. You will never see such rich, vibrant colors from any other film stock. Treat yourself.
Are you going to test the new Ilford B&W ?
There is a new Ilford B&W? I just saw the new colour film but that one I do want to try! I hear it's not actually by Ilford but it looks really nice so I really want to test it!
@@exploring_analog it is a B&W movie filmstock but Ilford are making it available in 35mm still cassettes at a low price!
Try Fomapan, developed in Photographer's Formulary "TD-3" (it's normally used for Kodak Technical Pan Film). I stand develop Fomapan for 30 minutes in standard dilution TD3, agitated ONCE every 5 minutes. (22 degrees C, 73F). This gives about 100-150asa and much finer grain than normal. TD3 can be obtained from B&H Photo Video in New York. They send to any country at reasonable rates. You end up with grain similar to Pan-F (50asa) film. The negatives look slightly thin but enlarge perfectly. Scanning doesn't give quite as good results but it's still better than using XTOL, ID11, or T-Max developer.
Thank you so much! I definitely will. I'm not very well versed in the development process - since I mostly shoot color films and have those developed in a lab, so I really appreciate this advice.
Another great film review, thank you! 😊📷
Thank you, so glad you liked it! 🤗 🎞️
Love the video and photos. I shoot Ektar in both 35mm and 120. Amazing film for outdoors and bright colors. Have several rolls ready for the fall colors.
Thank you so much ! :) How did you find the 120? I am really looking forward to trying that!
@@exploring_analog Its clearly similar to 35mm in my opinion. It loves bright clear sun and colors. I shoot 35mm and the 120 at 50 iso. Its a film that loves light. Its a preference but I worked in the photofinishing business for 22 years. I prefer the results of my shots being a full stop over. Try a few rolls and see how you like it at box speed and a few at 50 iso.
Thank you so much that is an amazing tip! I will try overexposing it by a stop :)
I love the colors of Ektar. The grain is so fine it’s almost not visible under the enlarger with a grain finder.
The grain is practically inexistent. I think this is the finest grain film I came across ! I bet it’s even finer in medium format 🤩
@@exploring_analog it’ll be the same size grain in medium format. The format is just bigger. The only grain finer then Ektar i found is b/w Adox cms20. Ektachrome is the same grain.
Perfect thank you! Can't wait to try it 🤩
@@exploring_analog I hope you share your experience! 💪🏻
Will do for sure!! 🤝
Nice work
Thank you so much 🤗
It's worth using and heralding as the best. The price is ridiculous, I think its shot up 100% since 2021. I have receipts from 2020 where I regularly paid £30 for a pack of 5 120 rolls.
yes a single roll is 20e here in France... I saw some blog posts complaining that is was 13e from just 3 years ago 🥲
No, ridiculous is that people pay high prices for obscure filme of shit quality. So increasing price for a quality product is only normal, not ridiculous at all. Unwanted? Yes. Or better said no, as long as people are willing to pay ridiculous money for shit, experimental, unreliable emulsions.
Kodak 100 is my favorite film. I love saturated film. I have photographed people with it and no problem. And if you want neutral tones then use Kodak ultramax. I do not use film for what is supposed to be for. I use whatever film is in my camera for any and every situation. If it comes out quirky, artsy, and unpredictable happy accidents then all the better. That is the reason I schoot film and not digital. So yes it is worth the price. They also made a 1000 speed and 25 speedyears ago. You can find it in a google search.
I did mention the 25 and 1000 speed Ektar in the video 😁 and also agree that it is worth the price. Like I said, I love the Ektar 100 and will be buying it again, loved the colours, saturation and fine grain. One of my faves so far
thank you for new video! I'd seen that the quality of the video increased a lot! the orange light is adorable, with a blue light on the other side would be perfect! 😁👍Good job with the photos 👌
I watch so much youtube, so with the amazing production quality most creators have I am a bit self conscious about the video quality :D so this comment really warms my heart, hopefully in a few more videos I can step it up a bit more. the light is just a small lamp, but looking into getting some more coloured lights for the background, because they really do make a big difference! 🤍🤗
@@exploring_analog Long and hard is the road towards the success on youtube...🙄 Maybe you will not ever reach it...maybe yes...anyway you will have fun! 😁
it's not pink, it is magenta dominant. Kodak Gold has a yellow dominant. From the color model: CMYK
Thank you for the rectification :)
