Dear Fashion Influencers... Please Stop
We need to talk about influencers. Fashion influencers on UA-cam and on Instagram are promoting the harmful industry of fast fashion, overconsumption and consumerism in general. They are reinforcing throwaway culture, buying clothes just to make fun of them and donating wayyy too much to charity. I don’t want to be an influencer if that means adding to the world’s problems. Dear fashion influencers... please stop.

This is a load of dung.
You have forget to maintain that fast fashion influencer they support animal cruelety testing on animals
They just don’t care …
Being a shopaholic is an issue. Many influencers are in fact shopaholics. They are basically addicted to the kick. That kick ypu got when you go on a shopping trip with 40 $ in your pocket and rashing ideas in your head, full of adrenaline snd dopamine. The hormone spikes come and go on a weekly or daily basis. The flat gets stuffed until one becomes a hoarder. Went there, done that. The initial problem is buying items for the sake of entertainment, fun, boredom, or being addicted to have at least 5 -6 DIY projects running at once, feeling the high to buy materials for them. Buying, because you need it only is an extreme opposite, often not realistic idea. How could we define the word "need"? I need this badly because my own version of retail therapy? I need this to reimagine my prom or my college years in my head? I need this as a cheaper option to therapy, trying to buy myself happiness? Wrong ways. Creation, repurposing, DIY is definitely better und und than buying new, but only if there is a real need for the project to realise. A real need is when you make the thing yourself, partly from existing old items in your household so you don't need to go buy new, you make a post about it, helping others to help themselves too, this is a real need. For example, making small furniture out of old textile and packaging materials. Or, repairing or upcycling a pair of chafed jeans, with holes in the crotch.😊
why should being a poc make you except from the responsibility that comes with promoting problematic brands and fast fashion??? as a pic it shouldn’t. they shouldn’t be excempt js bc theyre poc and aren’t as big as these other influencers. HOLD EVERYONE ACCOUNTABLE
western fashion is absolutely racist, remember lots of italian old men who make womens fashion still have a "no fats no blacks" mindset
there's a reason "we don't look at the bigger picture", it's because a bunch of people are making money off of it. i don't think this kinda made overseas system is ever gonna end, the planet and all of humanity will die out first
you're very right, saying what needs to be said, but it won't matter in the end cause low IQ clicks are the modern currency
sometimes i wear a hoodie that my mom bought with her first salary and it's still in good condition! i was lucky to snatch some pretty good stuff from modern shops too but i still wish they'd make clothes like that, long lasting and made to actually wear it everyday.
This isn't just a TikTok problem, it's a UA-cam and overall social media problem! I used to watch videos like these, including What's In My Bag videos. And while some of them have been helpful - for instance, helping me discover new brands of food and drinks to try, and that sling backpacks are the perfect fit for me since I am a woman with cerebral palsy and am a minimalist when it comes to my purse anyway, and the Study/Journal With Me and Clean With Me vids are nice when I need an inspirational push - but 99.9% of the time, I just feel so done. I don't care about GRWM videos or even the segments sprinkled in vlogs, as I prefer the natural look and most if not all makeup is just a waste of money, especially when one has an abundance of it. I no longer care about shopping hauls. And let's not forget the constant travel vlogs and the abundance of makeup and purses and things in "Pack My Bag With Me" videos. Like you said in the video: Where's all the money coming from? If I had the amount of money that people are spending in these videos, I'd be saving it, not spending it recklessly. God knows I've done enough of that in my younger years and I'm now 40. I'm not doing to sit here and say I don't slip up once in awhile, cause I definitely do. But never to this level. Ever. I look back on the years I overspent with regret. Anything I feel I no longer need or want, I donate it. It literally sickens and angers me to see videos like these anymore. I'm so done with all of it. And sure one can say, "Well, it's their money, blah blah blah". Okay, allow me to share some advice my own aunt passed down to me in my 20s and 30s: "Just because you have a lot of money, doesn't mean you need to spend all of it." That's especially true when you consider the state of the world we are in now. And our survival needs should outweigh our wants everytime. They say as you get older, you become wiser. And I personally want to spend the rest of this year saving instead of spending. Especially in case of an emergency crisis. And as a Christian, I'd rather live for God and His Kingdom of Heaven than for myself and a lost and damning material world. I wish more people felt the same and I hope and pray they will. "Influencers" included. Just some food for thought. Great video! Thank you for speaking up and God bless you
Let's not call them influencers. Call them sales people
Finally someone said it.
That’s part of why I stopped watching UA-camrs like Amber Scholl. I love her personality but I don’t like how she consumes so much. I would say 90% of her videos are her shopping.
a real fashionista would be able to take previously worn outfits and recreate a new look #margesimpsonchanelsuit
The only closet clean out I've ever liked was from a girl who worked in art, she said most of her clothes we're from the early 2000 (2018) and she kept most of the things, she only threw the things she knew she hadn't worn in 5 years and probably wouldn't again, I loved seeing her relived at everything that she had throne and kept and the things she found that she had forgoten about, because in truth that's what cleaning your closet should be, 5 or more years apart and only taking out things you would never wear again
What sort of profession is influencer? They are paid to promote items nobody needs. They are not educated and what is worse theyinfluence young people, mostly girls to buy all this stuff because they want to be like them. What a shallow way of earning money. By the way rhey won‘t promote thrifting because who would pay for that?
I buy from thrift stores so the only H & M and Shien clothes I have are ones that someone else donated sometimes with the original price tags still on them... did I buy someone's youtube vidoe haul clothes? Maybe I did, but I can't afford to buy everyone's haul video clothing donations and neither can the Earth afford it!
I’m very disappointed in one of my formerly favorite fashion channels, Lydia Jane Tomlinson, has recently been promoting fast-fashion brands because they pay her for collaborations where she gets to “design” pieces. Of course, she has very limited input anyway, and all these items are cheap materials made with exploitative practices and unsound environmental effects. She only buys quality, ethical items for herself, though! Demand, or good money, aren’t valid arguments, these are used by those who force girls into prostitution, or make street drugs, or run extortion “protection” rackets. The scale of the damage might be different, but the ethics are exactly the same. Great video, thank you.
I’m especially sick of those crocodile-teary videos where someone is donating all their crappy worn-out fast-fashion polyester items to “help people”. Every time I see one of these, the real reason for the wardrobe clean-out is obvious- that young person has become too obese to wear those things, and needs bigger clothes, but let’s be honest, at least. If you want to “help”, buy items that someone will value enough to wear after you, that is natural-fiber classics, and take excellent care of them. Even the poorest, just-arrived immigrant won’t wear them, they’ll buy a lot better things brand-new with a their first day’s wages. Also, I constantly see people wearing clothes with food and beverages spills, even chunky, fresh ones, a stomach-turning thing, or stains, down the front. What, do they recline while eating, like decadent ancient Romans? While spots are not always 100% avoidable, it’s not difficult to take reasonable care to prevent and remove them! The charities spend incredible amounts just sending all the crummy, stained, worn-out, torn, filthy, or otherwise non-wearable, cheap things they get to landfills. Find a textile recycler instead, maybe that polyester and acrylic can be made into useful items, like patio awnings or car covers. Plastic certainly is not a reasonable choice for clothing.
America fashion YT content is absolutely saturated with huge amounts of dirt-cheap, throawy, fast-fashion. It all seems to be about getting the lowest possible prices and features exploitative brands like Walmart, Target, etc. I just can’t feel good about wearing $8 jeans, I know the workers who made them didn’t get fair pay, much less safe, clean decent working conditions. Then, there’s the environmental impact of all this crap. Why are we so reluctant to pay the true costs for good-quality, ethically-made clothing and accessories? Clothes now cost about the same or even less than they did when I began my career in 1980, but are vastly inferior. But, we have had huge inflation in the last 40 years, it doesn’t make any sense. I think you’re right, we just have to boycott content that features fast-fashion. The argument is always “not everyone can afford more expensive clothes”, what nonsense. I have a tight wardrobe budget, too, I just buy fewer, but better, choices. Anyone can do this, and start by wearing the items they already have. I happily ignore trends, they’re specifically designed by brands to make us feel outdated, so that we’ll buy more cheap crap, especially synthetic fabrics and plastic accessories. You vote with that debit card, friends, use it only at good-quality, non-exploitative brands. If we Americans weren’t always getting fatter and fatter, we need not but so many new clothes. Don’t browse H&M, go for a walk instead.
Thanks for making this video. I had thought this with some videos I had seen. I'm glad there's someone pointing this out. ❤
At the end you ask: why don't influencers support ethical things when you can support a detox tea? 1. because they aren't educated enough about the problem (so job well-done with this video) 2. because they're lazy. Also: DO YOU KNOW HOW MUCH MONEY YOU'RE LITERALLY THROWING OUT THE DOOR GUYSSS.
They want to earn a lot of money and only big brands that have poor ethics have lots of money for advertisements
I’m struggling to find affordable sustainable brands, simple shops on the high street are fast fashion. Buying from Vinted all the shipping fees are adding up ❤️ and suggestions ?
I love your channel, please do more videos.
LOVE IT.
well done! you really speak out the truth
The cruel logic in answering these arguments are the fact that if we ban these factories this may happen: (1) parents with unemployable children will maim them and send them out to beg. (2)Children will be trafficked either for underage weddings or for sex on an even greater scale than now. The only answer is fair labor standards but how do we impose them on the countries in question and provide alternate means of production and employment??? I could live wearing vintage and discards from a thrift shop but our children would be laughed out of school. The "thrift shop marm" is a figure for ridicule and the flavor of the month is the hit song "made you look."
I love clothes I collect them But I only buy things I can see myself wear with many combinations and really love and would wear a lot And personally I can afford ethical clothing So I dont buy fast fashion
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
OMG, you are so right! I’m so tired of this fashion obsession
This is really inspiring and really well told. 🌞🙏 thank you for this video!!!
hey how are you doing? you haven’t posted in a while
This is satire right
No theres not. You're the racist for looking at everything as racist
Trash
Your content on "racist fashion" is bullshit, mind-bending and brainwashing children, mainly on how unclear and obscure you are being without showing any solid proof or source
bro the fact you made this video shows the rest of the world a second-hand video of how shitty Gen-Z is becoming
What a bunch of crap
Amazing piece!! I really appreciate your honesty and courage to speak truth to power and expose the sloganeering of the fashion industry…and in capitalism on a broader level.
I am currently watching this kind of videos about the harm of fast fashion and overconsumption. One thing that no one hasn't mentioned in anyway is that a really big part of the problem are the politicians, especially those in the countries of manufacturing. They are the ones that allow these working conditions, the low salaries and the pollution in their country. I believe that no one even influencers can not do much to change this situations because they are not goverments or multi- nation companies that held the power. For disclosure, I hate overconsumption but we can't blame the people of developed countries for what happens in underdeveloped countries, we can only blame those in power that do nothing.
Responsibility isn't the word she should use. She should rather say 'acknowledge the consequences' of their actions.
This is so true. I’ve seen the micro aggressions and veiled racism first hand. I’ve also had it happen to me countless times. On the corporate level. It’s absolutely disturbing. But this young lady did an excellent job in articulating the impact of these actions and struggles. To that I say kudos.
Hi there, I'm 16 and trying to be more mindful with the clothes I buy. What's your opinion on buying/selling on apps like depop? Thank you!
I love Depop! You can find a video on my channel titled something like "How to Find Sustainable Clothing", it includes a section on Depop as well :)
So happy to find a channel that aligns with my morals and values.
Really, she's white lol, she looks half Indian, what the hell
Mum ain't told her she hooked up with Mr Singh lol
Here is my question, do Fashion designers have this much stuff? I never really thought about those individuals within the fashion realm that produce the clothes that people are wearing do their closets look like this? I can't imagine Karl Lagerfeld needed that much space for all his collars.
It would cost these brands, often owned by billionaires or billionaire families (i.e. they are massively profitable), next to nothing compared to how much money they bring in, to hire a strong supply chain auditing team. It's their choice, and society's loss, that they don't.
What is ignored here, is that it isn’t just clothes and fashion models. The whole concept of fame is in itself unethical, whether it is through the internet, modeling or the show business. It is a horrible place to be, but many people do it, because of the picture we have in mind of fame, money and glamour. The expect that everyone will stop having this motivation and out of nothing be ethitical about theor fight for more, is unrealistic. Rathr you can accuse the devil of being bad.
Honestly I see your point but I'm not sure I entirely agree. Although the current Hollywood model of fame is hugely toxic, famous people have existed since the dawn of time, and have largely been performers (let's put royalty to one side for now, that's a different ball game). I don't believe fame itself to be a bad concept, and as you say, it's inescapable. But fame can be achieved through more ethical means, and people should be held accountable for their actions regardless of their status.
Excellent video...great points, great delivery!
