Sunghyun Lee: Riddles and Fiddles (2024)
Sunghyun Lee (*1995)
Riddles and Fiddles, for cello and ensemble (2024)
Uschik Choi, cello
Hwajune Kim, flute
Megumi Nakajima, oboe
Pablo Piñeiro Mundín, clarinet
Olivia Palmer-Baker, bassoon
Robyn Blair, horn
Jinhyoung Kim, trumpet
Noah Perkins, trombone
Grzegorz Chwalinski, percussion
Shan-Chi Hsu, piano
Isaac Bifet, violin
Elijah Spies, viola
Emmett Jackson, double bass
Raimonda Skabeikaitė, conductor
Moritz Fischer, sound director
German Première, 17 September 2024, HfMDK Frankfurt
I simply wanted to create music that brought together the raw elements of things I have liked since I was very young. Additionally, I wanted to move away from the mechanical and angular progressions that are a key feature of my works-compositions made up of various free and open fragments-and write music that feels a bit more organic.
For me, the goal of all composition is the process of overcoming my limits and exploring new paths. This time, I wanted to use the cello as a solo instrument for two main reasons: as a sort of compositional exercise dealing with the balance between the cello and the ensemble, and to write "melodies" utilizing the various expressive possibilities of the cello.
The work is composed of three parts:
The first part is a prelude that highlights the virtuosity of both the ensemble instruments and the cello.
In the second part, the cello poses various questions and riddles to the ensemble. The ensemble instruments respond to the cello in a way that gives a mechanical feeling-like broken machines, they ignore the cello's input. However, the cello keeps questioning, acting as a catalyst that drives powerful musical progressions.
The third part is a noise-timbre study between the cello and the ensemble. This ultimately transforms into electronic sounds, with the cello becoming "robotized," almost like a machine (but broken, crazy machine), concluding the piece.

One of my favorite works from Poppe!
I was at this show lol
Boolshyte. Pseudo-Webern.😅
if this sounds like Webern, you need to re-evaluate your life and ear right now.
@BetonBrutContemporary lol. I should have said ersatz wannabe Webern; sorry. It rubbish me the wrong way. And lack of ears is precisely what is required to like this pseudomusic.
@ Poor justification for a lousy snob. Go listen to Beethoven if you're not ready for this kind of stuff..
@@BetonBrutContemporary Beethoven is the hell.........
@@dabeenjeon8107 I Like Beethoven
Great composition, great work, great orchestra, great soloists. Modern music should pe performed this way.
sodelicious....................................
Great horn player!
Loved it!
"The beauty lies in being overburdened." exactly what I love about Poppe's music
must of been a nightmare to transport and tune 50 pianos... if i was a composer i would not write for an ensemble like that...
Thanks for making this available. Shame about the advertising interrupting it!
❤❤
Das ist sehr genial. Ich werde mich tief dort hinein begeben. DANKE fürs mich finden.....
yeah Ligeti created this same sound world in the early 1960s. And he didn't done need 50 pianos to do it neither
sodelicious..................................
more of the same after Atmospheres..... ( 1961)... so much for " modern "
Sweelinck❤

erstaunliche Klangwelten!
음악은 들어서 즐거워야한다. 불협화음의 연속.. 오래전 세종에서 세계초연 바이올린 쏠로를 들은적있는데 몬 듣겠더라.

Great Uncle Otto will be turning in his grave... and not in a good way!
wow, very nice piece by I composer I did not know at all. Will have to listen to a lot more of her works for sure!
Uma obra contemporânea criativa e que explora as belas sonoridades do trombone. É cheia de mistérios. Gostei muito!!
Bravo Maestro.Filidei !! Historical concerto for Viola !!
There's something about the consistent, hushed melancholy that reminds me of Silvestrov. Really affecting when heard in light of the program note, too - mourning at a distance, further mediated and distanced by the compositional process.
sodelicious............................
Ooo, thanks for this! I've only ever heard the Sally Matthews/Kent Nagano recording (and many times at that), this should be interesting!
Why care about sound if you don't try to form it into something? Why care about the world if you can't make something out of it? Such unmoving music. Why care about violence if you can't move us to tears? 😢 Seeking meaning but finding none, seems to be this composer's journey.
sodelicious............................
