Things change over time , not always for the better, the community should come first but that bus was missed years ago, in my long life I’ve seen massive changes in Manchester, these new residential tower blocks look nice but working class people can’t afford £1200 a month average rent? people won’t be able to aspire to have a house of their own ,,, it’ll be just survival like back in the early 20th century. Decent people still kept under the selfish yoke of capitalism

They never took care of it cuz they want to build more ugly block towers😑

I remember the bobbin pub at grey mare lane it was at fort beswick I lived in the flats as a kid!

Great video, I was born in Miles Platting, moved to Openshaw Village when it was first built in 77/78, I was only 5/6, had to move when the council demolished all the terraced houses at the top end of Bradford Road back to Sandal Street. Moved to Higher Broughton in 92 ( 1st Wife ), now in Horwich on the other side of Bolton ( 2nd Wife 😂 ) My Mum was born on Bank Street, Clayton and Dad was Collyhurst Thank You, brought back some real happy memories.

The steps shown at 3:02 are the location used in A Taste of Honey where the line, "I dreamt of you last night, I fell out of bed twice" is spoken, later re-appropriated of course by our very own Steven Patrick Morrissey. They are still there, just by the Holt Town Metrolink stop in east Manchester.

So sad to see an area so full of proud people become one of the biggest cesspits in the UK.

Mum used to work at the Aniline during the 50s. She said it was the best place she ever worked.

My mum's hairdressing shop (probably later than this photo), is on the corner with the van parked outside (0.51s).

Yep, that's what the working class parts of Manchester used to look like when I lived there in the 1960s. Most of the terrace houses, particularly the more decrepit looking ones, will have fallen victim to redevelopment by now and were replaced with something more modern and just as cheapo. A couple of my friends used to live in such terrace houses. You entered from the street through the door directly into the living room. People tried their best to make them comfortable, but the upkeep was terrible to do. The roofs tended to leak, especially after a storm, the drains were always clogging up, the windows were draughty, the frames rotten, and cockroaches and rats were a common sight.

Yeah … but we had the Parks and the Public Playgrounds …. Crowcroft Park,Platt Fields Park ,Birchfields Park,Swinton Park,the Red Croft Playground (off Grey Street) Whitworth Park … our little gang of friends played in all of them …. Great times and many happy memories 👍😂🤣

These photos bring back many happy memories of growing up in Manchester … I especially remember when they cleared all the houses from Ardwick Green almost all the way to Longsight ….. all my mates moved out to Hattersley near Glossop …. Then they built those god awful Ardwick Forts …. a rabbit warren of badly built and designed square boxes that some toffee nosed architect thought that people would like to live in … thank god they have all been demolished now …. I also remember walking back from town (Manchester City Centre) through the clearance of Hulme and again they built these monstrosities of concrete blocks ….there were no proper communities in these rabbit warrens .. the good old days had vanished … the corner shops are all gone … the Ironmongers shops,Butchers,Greengrocers,Off Licenses,Newsagents and Tobacconists,Sweetshops, all gone … what do we have now !! Supermarkets and Shopping Malls …. and most of the Shopping Malls are becoming empty because the rents are too high and besides there just full of lost souls looking for a bargain ….. all the characters have gone … the people who built a community …. Family … Friends … Bob’s your uncle and your Aunt Fanny ….. all these characters have gone … replaced by what ? Diversity !! FFS …….. give me the old days anytime ….

The streets look clean, I remember these streets in the late 60’s early 70’s and by then a lot of them looked tatty. Slum clearance followed and I remember my father taking me around the suburbs in the mid to late 60’s and seeing the huge rows of condemned houses and burning heaps of rubble. Thanks for the memories.

Ah the Domino Club - saw many bands, singers, comedians some before they became famous eg Lulu age !4 singing "Shout". Bernard Manning etc. Had a punch up just outside the main entrance!

Don't think all photos were from the fifties, at least one was from late 70s.

It's clear some of these images are from the 60's and even 70's but it's really good to see what the area looked like back in the day. I'm just old enough to remember gaslights and cobbled streets. Thank you for sharing them
