The Power of Real-Time Captions: Dr. Barbara Weinstein on InnoCaption App Survey Findings
Gael Hannan and Shari Eberts interview Dr. Barbara Weinstein, a distinguished professor at CUNY and adjunct professor at NYU Langone Medical Center. Dr. Weinstein shares her recent research on the InnoCaption app, which provides real-time captions for phone calls, making them accessible to individuals with hearing loss.
Dr. Weinstein highlights that many hearing professionals are not familiar with captioning apps like InnoCaption, despite their potential to greatly improve phone call experiences for hearing aid and cochlear implant users. Her research involved a comprehensive survey of InnoCaption users, focusing on both technological and psychosocial benefits. Key findings revealed that before using the app, users experienced high levels of frustration and anxiety during phone calls. However, after three months of using InnoCaption, participants reported increased phone usage, reduced listening effort, and improved emotional well-being. They felt more relaxed and confident, especially during important calls such as medical appointments.
InnoCaption, which is free and funded by the FCC, offers both live stenographer and automated speech recognition options, enhancing accessibility at no cost to users. Dr. Weinstein emphasizes the importance of audiologists inquiring about their patients' phone call experiences and recommending tools like InnoCaption to improve their quality of life.

    The biggest fear for me is that you loss all hearing, no matter how little you have, in the ear that gets the CI. It’s hard to know when to cut that tether.

    I suffered SSHL in my left ear in October of 2023. After much testing and, having to qualify, I am getting my CI in April of 2024. This video just justified that I have made the right decision to get a CI. I am a Nurse and it is almost impossible to perform my duties with SSHL, reactive tinnitus, and hyperacusis. I definitely connected with the participants. Feeling the same as them. I am praying that I will be able to go back to my nursing job after the surgery. Thank you for this video!

    I changed my health insurance plan, so I was able to get a set of the Signia Active X Pro aids. Yeah, these things do make voices easier to understand, but overall the sound quality sucks. Mine were way too tinny after the audiologist first set them up, and there is really only a volume and tone control in the very lame app. I was setup with around 5 programs, but to be honest I could not tell the difference between them. The app also does not remember settings. It always reverts to the default. So, if you are using the Universal program and change the volume and the tone, then turn off the aids or switch programs, the app will not remember the adjustments that you made. Although these have a list price around $3700, they also don't sound nearly as good for music as a $37 pair of earbuds. And, where cheap earphones usually give you a graphic equalizer, these expensive hearing aids won't let a user adjust anything. All adjustments need to be made by an audiologist, which sucks. Then there is the facts that unlike a cheap set of earphones these expensive devices only work with iPhones for streaming. Oy... Come on Signia...

    Speaking of hearing, I have started to watch this show. Here are my observations. I can hear the master of ceremonies' voice much better than I could hear the CEO's voice. Being hearing impaired, I do believe that the main part of this difference is that the MC's voice is pitched in the more treble range and the CEO's voice is much lower and more muddy.

    LoL. the pregnant girl who wants to hear a little voice....SURPRISE! You'll hear a little robot that whizes clicks and beeps with the shittiest intonations ever! An implant was suggest to me and I soo regret it. The readaptaion is immense, the sound is god aweful. It's a new lnguage composed of metalic sounds and beeps and clicks ou need to learn. I really regret getting an implant becasue I can hear and communicate well with just one hearing aid in my good ear. You have to be deaf or unable to have hearing aids to apreciate this. Because it wont help me on the phone,it wont help me in groups and it doesn't help for the tv. So why th F did the docs put that in me? I can do all that with my regular hearing aid?!?!?!? I find doctors turn to this sergery too fast without considering quality. The more words you recognize the better, even they sound distorted and bad, think R2D2 on a wrong radio frequency and add tatick and random popping sounds...Lastly, if you can hear music a bit and enjoy, the implant will totally destro this. Music ithe way you know it is gone FOREVER.

    Hi Doctor: I have a question: If a patient gets a "hearing-improvement" device (e.g., Airpod Pro) other than the expensive prescription hearing aid, and as a result is able to hear very well and is no longer socially isolated, would that prevent dementia as effective as a prescription hearing aid?

    I just had my Cochlear Implant two weeks ago and I tested to see if the Kanso 2 would attach #4 magnet. Cannot feel any magnet pull. Very cool - everyone loves Lou for,sure what a great guy - the explanation about the hearing aids and now the implant is very interesting - I have tinnitus and some times it gets pretty loud and masks voices so I catch myself staring at peoples faces to help me understand what they are saying - this problem is making me appreciate the struggles that people with real hearing loss must deal with and increases my respect for people like Lou who step up and push through to have a good life despite the difficulties - Life is good, even when it ain’t so good sometimes - self determination and positive attitude is the key (in my humble opinion)

    Well I am astonished that this was produced 3 years ago and I still have problems in Australia getting an MRI wether on my head or my water works. I have had a number of MRI's but each time I get a new Radiologist who has no experience with the neucleus 7 Processor they think I have the old magnet. I now want one for a urology problem. I have been advised to get the radiologists to contact the Cochlear centre for guidance.

    Lou's story is an awesome exampleof resilience and determination. *André Djourno and Charles Eyriès* invented the original cochlear implant in 1957. Their design distributed stimulation using a single channel. The modern day, multi-channel, cochlear implant was independently developed and commercialized by two separate teams-one led by *Graeme Clark in Australia* and another by *Ingeborg Hochmair and her future husband, Erwin Hochmair in Austria* Hochmairs' device first implanted in a person in December 1977 and Clark's in August 1978.

    As someone who is hard of hearing, I'm glad to hear that CI's are becoming better and safer. However, I think it's a bit disingenuous to not mention any side effects or issues that might arise. I know someone in her 70s who got implanted about 6 months ago. She mentioned dizziness (which I guess could be due to inflammation or proximity of the implant to the semi-circular canals?). I recently asked her if she felt her implant was working, now that she's had some time to adjust, and she nodded yes, but I just couldn't get a read on how much of a difference it was making compared to pre-implant.

    • @gordonhenderson1965
      @gordonhenderson1965 7 місяців тому

      I had my implant installed back in the mid 90s when it was basically experimental. The dizziness is a real side effect, but over time it went away. My surgery was 6 hours if you can believe it, so what Lou is talking about here, minor surgery, minor recovery, I guess they have come a long way since.

    This woman asking Lou the questions obviously did not hear or did not listen to what he said in the beginning. In telling about his childhood he described the stigma of wearing the big hearing aid and getting bullied and teased. And then she asked “did you feel a stigma about your hearing loss or were you able to accept it?” I am so happy for Lou to be able to hear and converse with people now.
