A few steps beyond Charles Ives. Economically rendered, considering there are TWO orchestras. Anthony Braxton and his similarly designed projects come to mind (although he was somewhat idealistic about multiple orchestras ON OTHER PLANETS...). Exploratory describes this music to a T. Sure wish I'd heard of this fellow back in the '70s!

I am a jazz/fusion dude and first experienced this when I was at Berklee College of Music. I’ll never forget how shocked and awestruck and mesmerized I was when the Adagio began. Totally changed my ideas on modern harmony.

Where did you manage to obtain the orchestral score?

Very smooth Stravinsky composition. Chromatic discontinuities are all resolved by nice, neat cadences.

astonishingly accurate playing rhythmically in the 4/4=120 passages at the climax - the music really makes sense rather than making an admittedly glorious racket - the ensemble is great - i imagine the result of copious rehearsals

I initially really disliked this symphony due to how difficult the first three movements were to listen to, but… that fourth movement, wow… (it touched my closeted socialist heart)

for me, the beauty of the symphony is that it's atonal not only for the sake of atonality in and of itself, but also to make the rare tonal sections all the more breathtaking. just look at 1:11:42 -- what would otherwise be average slow writing, within its surrounding atonality it's a gorgeous twelve bars of pure Gold major. it really makes you treasure, in the midst of all the infinite chaos and dissonance in existence, how precious harmony is.

This is a fascinating, complex score that never rises to musical consequence. It says very little I care about but very eloquently. Salonen is a very talented composer, but composing great music is very hard to do. Of course, this is only my opinion.
