Michele Selvaggi is a Canadian-born and Switzerland-based composer of experimental and electroacoustic music who has recently graduated from a MA in Composition at the Musik-Akademie with a prize-winning thesis on Entropic Drift in musical systems. He has been the recipient of over 20 awards and prizes, including selection as the winner of three separate SOCAN Foundation Composer Awards in both the Chamber Music category and twice in the Electroacoustic category, and has completed an artistic residency at the SME AMKP Studio for Electroacoustic Music at the Academy of Music in Krakow, Poland through the Residency Prix CIME 2021 working with composer, Marek Chołoniewski.
Michele has been commissioned by and has collaborated with multiple international organizations, including the impulse Festival, the UdK Berlin, Museum Tinguely, Redshift Music, Arraymusic, the Kamratōn Ensemble, the Canadian Music Centre, and the Canadian New Music Network. In his recent practice, Michele is developing a body of research that explores what he coins as “sonic entropy”, where sonic characteristics define potential trajectories between varying structures in a musical space. Currently, he is crafting an album series of 6 solo pieces for Basel-based performers to complement his research, funded by the Nicati-de Luze Foundation.
Michele’s music specializes in pleasant discomfort, drawing inspiration from harsh noise, microtonality, soundscape, and his own personal experiences navigating the world with an often demanding, but colourful anxiety disorder.
