Trying to make a AAA Game - S&box Dev log 4
After 6 months of wrestling with the s&box engine, I managed to put some footage together of where we are at, not all footage reflects the current look of the game. This is because I've been unable to access the project for 2 months due to a current bug inside S&box's blendable shader. This was bound to happen during a Dev Preview stage of the s&box engine. Hope you enjoy the progress so far!

Man I really want S&box. This stuff looks so good! I've used both the original source hammer and the new hammer for source 2. I can somewhat model in blender but I still want to learn the coding side of producing a game. For some reason tho my application on Facepunch was detected by the system as "spam" (I sent a typical application not begging with them). I'll probably send an email to see if it was intential. Anyway enough of my self pity, great job man! Looks great! Gl and hope I'll be able to play it someday!

The forums got filled with lots of posts titled S&box application so they made a special thread to keep it organized, Don't forget to add your steam ID and take good pics! Just wanted to let you know that this helped me a lot with a dota 2 mod I'm working on! Knew basically nothing about 3d modelling going into this, and now I can generate item boxes (a cube with a picture on each side) from a pngs via a python script to use as items for my mod.
What? Hover is obviously Tribes clone. Not halo or any other game. And if you do not read the text and don't learn skiing, then you miss the unique thing about it. Tribes wanted to be standard ctf shooter, but the skiing bug became the defining mechanic of the series.

I think you fundamentally misunderstand the appeal of roblox for developers. as a platform, roblox has a readily available audience of players dying to play something fresh, and the engine itself is lightweight enough that it can run on phones without a hitch. s&ndbox is likely going to remain pc exclusive given its asset fidelity, and there isn't a promising monetization incentive to keep developers on the platform outside of hobbyist work.
Your right, I don't think s&box will ever be able to leave pc, and if they did it would probably be a decade away.

Super Monkey Ball is owned by Sega, not Nintendo, and Sega is usually a lot cooler with their fan communities. Tower Unite has a game mode like that too.
You didn't cover building? You brushed over some of the most important core game-play that started with 'Gmod', building shit. Pure sandbox building.

Ok, i watched a vid by bluedrake 1 year ago and was like "nice gmod 2" now with this its like shit....... this is like if you took dreams ps4/ps5 and shot it full of roids, made it run on PC and overhauled everything. If this blows up just as much as gmod, i truely believe that s&box would take over a lot of games, so in turn aaa dev studios would need to change the way they look at game development.
at 0:16 you mentioned there's glimpses of updates from 2018, but they went back even further. I've been following this project on and off since around 2018 and there was some work being done all the way back in 2017 (you can see these on the wayback machine). I think on garry's blog he's been talking about wanting to do this since the early-mid 2010s.

Imagine you build a world, and you want a mini golf course, so you take it from the golf course game and drop it into your world. So essentially you can take entities from other games and place them in your own. So you could make your own world made of multiple different games. Or just make your own entirely. That’s the rough explanation
mad respect in sticking with s&box despite its nature, All the work you are doing to develop a full blown solo project today will likely help the devs of tomorrow on the engine.
What is this clickbait title of 'Trying to make a AAA game'? Like lmfao.. this looks like an Earth 2 devlog. You should probably have a creative vision and some clear focus on developing a fun gameplay loop before delving into designing a map & models. This just screams riding the S&box hype while you have a key before others. If this was a Unity devlog, this video would have 0 views.
Instead of diving head first into trying to make a "AAA" game, maybe pump the brakes a bit and work on something simpler? This all looks really far from being a triple 'AAA' game. Kind of disingenuous or arrogant to claim that. That would be like me saying I'm "trying" to build a skyscraper when I'm nothing more than a residential framer. Anyway, best of luck!
This is why it’s titled trying to make a triple AAA game, if you follow from the start this is the 1st year out of the potential 5 years progress it’s going to take. I don’t think any 1st year could make a AAA game. All AAA games look bad in their first year of development. If I work on something simple then it’ll only hold back progress to this project

@@pnwman8330 It's definitely not a mod, I wrote my npcs and UI and entity's, until i start programming in the 2nd year. There isn't any point programming because as shown in this video, we are in private development preview of the s&box engine. Anything you code just becomes obsolete 3 months later, this is not like unity or unreal engine where you have a stable base. All the assets I create are my own everything from combat / animation / modelling / worlc design / music / programming. Everything in this game will be made from scratch. Including player data, networking ect. I've never stated I'm a paid developer. I'm just a cybersec guy trying to make a AAA game, hence the entire point of the series that you seemed to have not understood at all. You can't claim this is a mod when nothing has been modded? Once again, Of course everything is trash, what would you expect from a 1st year? Things will only get better as they have been throughout the series and will continue to do so until we reach a AAA level. This has been clear from episode 1 There are no lies and if anything this series is created to help solo developers understand everything that goes into making a AAA game. That's the entire point lol

I was hoping s&box to be a high quality next gen alternative to Roblox or things like that. A high level abstraction of game engine. People pack their decades of game dev knowledge into ready to use components. But yeah, it's still very far from that stage. I hope there are more competition and they can learn from each other. I'm just a guy that haven't seriously played new games for 10+ year. Except Fall guys or Minecraft. I'm still watching all those developments of source2, HL:A, unreal 5, Oculus. But I want a more democratised way of game making. I hope everyone with some spare time can at least build their own world that exceeds PS3 quality. Ultimately it requires skills and sense of aesthetic. But still, when I see you struggling, I feel like I can't keep thinking S&box would be the ultimate tool
Indeed, although I have seen quality produced in s&box by their staff that looks very high quality and could easily compete with the ps5 level of detail. I'm just not at the skill level yet to pull to showcase that kind of thing. Have faith, only Time will tell

After seeing that game i forget whats it called bright memory infinite or something, i beloeve one passionate person can do more than many uninspired or dispassionate developers( made this way by corporate intervention of course)
