The Rundown: Hoka Tecton X 2 vs Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra

What is going on guys! Super excited to do another episode of the The Rundown. In this video I'm comparing two of the best carbon plated trail shoes out there. We have the Hoka Tecton X 2 vs Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra. I had a super tough time trying to pick between the two because even though they're both carbon plated (sort of), they couldn't be more different when it comes to the rides of th...

Today I compare two shoes in a heads up battle for 5k/10k race day king. While both shoes are not the most up to date model, they still may hold the edge over their current iterations. I found the SB II a bit on the short side
Great. But what would you choose for a Marathon distance between the two?
Superblast for sure. I think it'll pay off in the long run and can carry you that marathon distance whereas I may think the Boston 12 is a faster shoe, but I think you legs and body might be feeling it towards the later stages of a marathon.
Too much hype
There is a rock plate in the forefoot, same as the first Zegama.
Will need to buy this, after watching your review
@@telebiopic Nike was just having a sale on them dropping them down to like $102. A steal if I’ve ever seen one. Hopefully they still have it.
Hi, thank you for the review, just a question: how about the break in for the Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra vs the Tecton X2?
@@robytosso9311 thanks for watching! Both are pretty much ready to go from the start, more so the Speed Ultra. I felt like the plate in the tecton need like 15 miles to loosen up a bit. I actually bent the shoe a lot with my hands to loosen it up before then because it felt a little too stiff on the trails
Great review! I bought these shoes and they are sooo comfortable, amazing fit for my feet. I wanna ask Because you mentioning it in the video about the mud and How the shoe got heavy. That bothers me alot because I have a really muddy and wet 100k/ 100 miler (havnt desided yet :) ). I really want to use the zegama 2 for this run but might swap it for a Salomon Genesis that has the matryx upper which doesnt hold any mud or water, but has a lot less cushining. Whats your thoughts on that ? :)
@@patrikandersson2284 sorry for getting back so late! I don’t have any experience with the genesis but my feeling is that mud is mud and regardless of what shoe you wear, after awhile it’ll probably start to feel heavy and cumbersome. If you have the funds it might not be bad to switch at a certain point to help fresh up your feet. That’s what I did but the Tecton X2 was not the move lol. But good look on your race!
@@patrikandersson2284 I’ll also say with that in mind, which ever shoe is more comfortable for you would be my pick.
@@TheMilesMatter Thank you! i find the zegama 2 great and probably be keepin them on for the entire race
Terrex is shit .. the ankle breaker🎉
Great review! I would be great to get a comparison of the Adidas Agravic Speed Ultra vs Adidas Agravic Speed too!
Thank you and yeah I’d be really interested to see those differences.
Thanks@@TheMilesMatter Also would be great to know which are the cheaper trail shoes you'd recommend that compare with the Tecton X 2 and Speed Ultra?
@@javieriglesias6556 Honestly I don’t think there’s going to be a lot like the Speed ultra. I think it really sets itself apart from a lot of the trail shoes but I’m not super versed on the trail shoe realm but as far as the tecton goes it’s on the firmer side, not super flexible and pretty snappy so I’m not sure what would compare but I’m convinced you could find a trail shoe around that $140-$180 range that would feel the same/ give you a similar ride.
Thanks again @@TheMilesMatter
Solid review and comparison. You made some great points, how much benefit will most of us doing ultras really get from a carbon plated shoe when were just trying to complete it in a reasonable time.
Thanks man, yeah I really do enjoy them but I just used the zegama 2 for 75 miles of an ultra and then switched to the tecton x for the last 25 miles and hated life lol.
Having raced a technical Rocky Mountains 50k in the Agravic Speed Ultra, it can certainly handle technical trails well (with strong ankles) and is the closest trail shoe equivalent to road supershoes. Nonetheless, I do agree that the Tecton X is the more traditional shoe and will be the better shoe for most people.
Solid man. Yeah it definitely feels way closer to a true super road shoe than the tecton x
Thoughts on these as more of a trail hiking shoe? Also in Asheville area. Know lugs arent super deep and no rock plate, but that level of cushion has peaked my interest for 8-10 mile treks.
I’ve done a lot of thru hiking over the years and these would definitely be my go to shoe for hikes of that nature or even 8-10 mile hikes. I will say which I didn’t in the video that they do have a lot of material so I’m wondering if they’d be hot or not come peak summer but even then I’d still probably choose these as my shoe of choice for a multi day hike.
@@TheMilesMatter thank you, appreciate the insight!
Great review. thanks for that
Thanks for watching!
I think you are right on the lateral open works, I land quite much on the lateral rail, and although have very little issues with spraining my ankles, the shoe's worked open side poses more risks than needed.
Yeah I would finish a run and be ok, but I felt like my feet and ankles were exhausted from how much I had to keep everything in check
I got these to wear casually, haven’t worn them yet but from trying them on, they feel OK but the inside arch is a little high.. maybe as I wear them I will be more comfortable with them
Interesting I haven’t had that issue but that’s all foot shape dependent. Hope they end up working for you.
I use it for hill repeats. Works fantastic.
Great all rounder
Great review. Love that murdered out color way! Where did you find that??? Congrats on your 100 miler finish. 👊
Thanks man. I found it on this website called Mr. Porter a few days before the actual release but have seen the all black colorway in person at this store Public Lands by me and I’m sure you can find it online by now
@@TheMilesMatter Great Review I’m in the UK do you know when this colour way is due to be released in UK?
@@r4edo I wish I knew man, but unfortunately I have no info on that.
some improvements Zegama 3 could take: 1.Nike can use more Vibram megagrip ( covers the whole outsole rather than part of it) , with litebase tech to reduce weight; 2.the same with you, this shoe needs more toe cap protection, though this may increase weight; 3. most importantly, it is a bit overbuilt, with some deign elements in the upper seems unnecessary. remove them and the whole shoe can be lighter😍
Totally agree. Think there’s so much they can do without to tighten this up.
I ran these last weekend was my first marathon (I'm usually a half guy) ran a 2:47 and Qualified for Boston! absolutely loved this shoe. I hated the alphafly 2... it tore my foot to shreds, this one on the other hand didnt give me any issues at all.
2:47 for your first marathon?! That’s awesome man. I can’t wait to break these out for my next marathon.
Not for me! I tried it but my ankle bones {Lateral Malleolus} keep hitting the upper part of the shoe and it's painful! I do love the previous models though; no complaints.
I think I had that issue only if I tied the laces too tight, but once I found that sweet spot they were good to go.
COMMENT WAN!
I love my Agravic Speed Ultras. Bought mine in my standard size. No Issues. Yeah your feet will swell once you're hitting 50 miles and up. Hence ULTRA type Trail Shoes have all that real estate up front. But hey. That's what works for me. Every one is different. There is NO perfect shoe out there. Just what works for YOU and YOU ALONE. Enjoy em. They're great shoes.
Yeah I might come back for them down the road once they go on sale or wait for V2 and hope they make it a little more stable.
Nice new bands
You have to try the TS10 , much more versatile shoe .
I'll have to give them a shot this summer. You like them better than the TS9?
Agreed. This Dad shoes is one of the most comfortable shoes ever.

Great review
Thanks Sandy!
great review brother 👍
Thank you my man
subscriber on: 11 keep the good work. 👍
Much Love🙏
Interesting to see the AF 1 take 4th. Know it’s a big time favorite. But I have hope for the AF 3, just will really have to see come race day👌
I have 2 pairs. I wasn't sure when I first put them on but after getting used to them I love them slightly more than the vaporfly 3 (2nd) and the vaporfly 2 (3rd) and the alphafly 1(4th)
I almost caught those streakfly’s at Ross.., but it was a bit too big on my foot. I was able to grab a takumi though for $40 .., extremely satisfied. keep up the good work, grow your channel. your shoe rotation is hella deep
Thank you my man. I still have hopes for the Takumis and haven't ruled them out just yet.
Love this video!
