    I do wonder if the abundance of Sega cabinets like the multiplayer Daytona USA setup meant in its heyday this arcade was possibly a Sega-branded arcade that set up shop at Skylon Tower, and when the contract ran out, they just didn't bother changing things over.

    In Poland in the 90s at stores appeared two Japan Famicom style cartridges with nine Camerica games (on the first there were The Ultimate Stuntman, Micro Machines, Dizzy, Big Nose the Caveman, Big Nose Freaks out; on the second there were Soccer, Robin Hood, Boomerang Kid and Go Dizzy Go). Those games presented really high level compared to many others like Mario, Bomberman etc.). There is still a mystery how it is possible that games published and sold in North America emerged in Poland on different cartridges :)

    I really like their arcade setup in this video.Like you said, they really tried to have all their bases covered. Lots of 90s games, early 2000s games, rhythm games, and some ticket games. Very few 80s games - which I think is good. I visited an arcade where the owners clearly grew up in the 80s, and just filled the entire arcade with only 80s games. They are struggling financially. There's only so much Pac Man and Galaga a person can play before it gets old! Need more variety. I tried to suggest they put in 90s and 2000s cabinets, but they didnt want to listen. They treated the business like their own personal arcadr collection, and not like an actual business. They don't listen to customers.

  • @TheBigExclusive
    @TheBigExclusive 4 місяці тому

    The reason a lot of new arcades aren't in bigger cities are because of the crazy high rent prices. Many arcade owners can't afford to open in a large major city anymore. The rent is super super expensive. It's much cheaper to open in the suburbs, or a smaller town. Also, some cities aren't welcoming to arcade businesses. They still have old laws in place that prevent arcades from being open in a city. They classify arcades as gambling and refuse to let them operate. Lastly, some landlords don't want arcades on their property and refuse to rent space to arcade businesses. They don't want kids and teens hanging around. Many upscale malls refuse to rent space to arcades. Or if they do, they only allow the arcade to open on the very edge of the property that's far away from everything. I've met several arcade owners who have talked about having to really work hard to find a city that is welcoming to arcade businesses.

    I have almost all of these. The only ones I didn't get back in the day are Power Strike (because of the mail in order thing) and James Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing. Even back in the day when I was buying all the newer Sega Master System games (I'm in North America), the ones with the new Sega Master System logo on the boxes like Dick Tracy, Ghouls 'N Ghosts, Joe Montana Football, Columns, etc, I NEVER saw the Sega Master System version of Buster Douglas, not even once and I was in a major U.S city, shopping at a major Toys 'R Us store that would get almost every video game release, even the most obscure stuff. Even when the Master system version of Buster Douglas was brand new it was incredibly rare to find. Also, I don't remember the exact date the North American version of James Buster Douglas on Sega Master System released (sources claim it was sometime during 1990, but the exact date is unknown. One source claims January 1st, 1990 for the Sega Master System version of Buster Douglas but that is 100% wrong. In real life, Buster Douglas won the world championship during February 1990 and almost no one knew who he was before that, so the game had to had been released some months after he won the world title), but it wouldn't surprise me if it released a month AFTER Buster Douglas lost the world championship (he lost it during October 1990, so it wouldn't surprise me if they had the game scheduled for it's North American release during the November / December 1990 holiday season), which probably explains the ultra low print run of the Master System version since Sega already had the game ready while Buster Douglas was the world champion and they probably didn't want to invest too much in printing up too many copies of a game where the main fighter just lost his championship. At least the Sega Genesis version (which is a very different game) is easy to find. The Genesis version had the luxury of coming out around June 1990, when Buster Douglas was still the world champion.

    • @PlayasGuide
      @PlayasGuide 4 місяці тому

      The time frame you described for the release of Jes Buster Douglas Knockout Boxing makes total sense, and I had heard somewhere before that it was released just after his loss.

    I will tell you how this whole thing got started. - Many kids had an NES back in the day - If you were lucky maybe you had around 10 NES games, but also rented and traded games too - Since there are like 2,000 games for the system (USA and Japan) nobody ever played them all - Once this generation got jobs and money they started buying back their old games - They also bought NES games that they wanted to play or heard of but never got the chance to play - The NES system eventually got reversed engineered and now we have flash carts and emulators - Eventually someone started coding new games - Since everyone is building up their collections, buying new games fits right in with the old games - Now new NES games are coming out each month despite us having access to a PS5 and Xbox Series X - The familiarity with the console, plus the simplicity and easy of use make it a system that just won't die

    I grew up with the NES and then the SNES as a kid. Of course the SNES has better graphics and a better controller and better sound. As far as new games coming out for a console, the NES is nailing it out of the park with homebrew and new software. SNES games are just harder to make and require bigger budgets. The NES is the sweet spot where a small group of developers can sit down and make something and not break the bank. You also have to think, there was a whole generation of kids who grew up with this console and they are not willing to let it die. They are keeping it alive for decades to come.

    As an old school Sonic fan, I gotta try out the first Freedom Planet. It looks pretty cool!

    @PlayasGuide At 3:55: Is the title of this game Dragons Dead? I think I must be hearing it incorrectly as I can't find it on Steam. Could you please let me know the correct title? Thank you!

    I went here as a newly immigrant kid in 1990 with my parents. I’m 40 now and i remember having such a great night there.

      That's awesome. You're fortunate to have memories of this place in its heyday. I can only image what it must have been like back then.
