Can’t believe at 9:27ish he missed getting run over by a few seconds ! Truck crosses the road from the left! Truck would probably have bounced off John he was so tough. Great performance.
Such a high level. Great to see Gerry Curtis in full flight. And the commentator says he is the weak leg - what a team! He gave me a pair of socks one year at the national cross country - I'd never met him before! Old school....
One of the best cross-country courses that I have ever seen. This is real cross country like it should be. Now many cross-country courses are like running on the road, really a travesty; and John was an incredible athlete without question one of the best of his era but even then, underrated and now virtually forgotten.
John was a great runner, vastly underrated. Tremendous accomplishments (two time world cross country championships, Olympic medal (I believe a bronze) in marathon plus other accomplishments. But I love it when he beat (just at the line) the arrogant Steve Ovett in a 5000 meter race.
With space age runners, perfect conditions, flat track, runners all around him blocking any wind and dragging him along in their slipstream, training for that one moment. I'm not saying it wasn't a good feat but he didn't and couldn't do it by himself. Some of these guys were part timers really and running in tough conditions on a tough track after long hard seasons. Gerry Curtis was a full time fire fighter who only took up running at 22 and ran a marathon in 2h 14 and change. If he had started running earlier and did it full time I would imagine he'd have gotten very close to 2hrs.
Pricless footage. I'll never forget the time I saw treacy at the Ekiden relay in New York city 1987. Remember the awards ceremony? Pat Porter said "Thank god I didn't have to run against Jon Treacy" (Mark Curp did and paid the price).
What is this race?
This is great. The first time I've seen Jim Norris since he was in high school.
Saw a photo of Ray Flynn recently, he's been eating well, the size of a house!

What good times, nowadays every marathon in Europe and America are African championships,
When Ireland was great at something.
Jesus John was hitting eack 5km in 14:20 insane running John was truly amazing.
Running in the rain would only have encouraged John. 💪💪💪
True gentlemen on all sides
What fantastic talent. One for their memories as well.

Have to correct that - SILVER, in one of the most competitive marathon fields ever assembled - second to Carlos Lopes no less!
He definitely got the silver in the marathon ahead of the English runner.
Charlie Spedding placed third.@@marksmyth5505
15k and raining like that, in 42 minutes, is just insane
Pretty tough training run in the summer. No shade. No Water fountains. All concrete. These guys are lucky it was a rainy day.
Nice one John
Incredible to see this! Race media coverage was far better back then. Subscribed
It rains often in Ireland. John is a champ in all kinds of wx.
I was there, alternate for New Hampshire. Wait, no that was 87.
Craig Virgin still the best USA CC runner ever. And Eliud Kipchoge just ran as fast as this team on his own.

On his own? That's quite a quick re-write of history
I keep willing Mamede to do better in championships, what might have been.

Commentator saying Ireland had only 5 international runner's 😂
Was at it! Great afternoon.
Gutsy run for the 5000m 4th.. they were always gutsy runs with Treacy.
This is really fun watching this!
