In my many decades of riding & showing both hunters & jumpers all over the country, never have I seen a horse learn to stop stopping (refusing a fence) via a rider's beating it while yanking back on its face. A horse stops for three reasons: (1) It's sore; (2) Bad riding, usually jumping ahead of the motion; (3) It's being asked to do something it cannot due b/c of bad training, lack of talent, fear, lack of condition, exhaustion. The way too many trainers work their show hunters half to death nowadays before they go in the ring ~ to produce a placid animal ~ combined with the increasing number of stops I've seen in recent years ~ well, I'm correct on this issue. Am I qualified to say such a thing? Yes. Would I say the same if I saw a video of me in my younger days smacking a horse for stopping? Most definitely.
