Seat Shaping Thoughts
Переглядів 1,1 тис.12 років тому
Some final words regarding my process to shape wooden chair seats. Sorry, a bit choppy editing, I had some distractions and trouble getting my thoughts organized.
"Travishing" a chair seat
Переглядів 1,8 тис.12 років тому
After adzing, the second step in shaping a wooden chair seat, using the English "travisher", as it is called. The traditional curved shaping tool evolved with the trade of Windsor chair making in Great Britain. Quite an efficient tool, albeit requiring some physical effort to use.
Adzing a Windsor Chair Seat

This is the technique that I use to rough out a chair seat. It is the traditional method that I learned while working in Great Britain, with it's remarkable history of fine chair making. The seat blank here is from a local species of Cherry in my area, to be used in a new rocking chair design. In most cases in Great Britain, the choice of seat wood is Elm, a somewhat easier wood to adze compare...

Tree climbing by using an ancient Japanese method
Smaller face cut and wedge it over. Is that a husky 359?
Most of those trees on that property had back lean towards high voltage and a fiber cable, also a heavy travelled road out of the picture. The homeowner was manning the puller and he likes to be involved. Cut the cable in these parts and the assessment in those days was around ten grand. A puller seemed pertinent. Ya, a modded 359.
How to descend?
That's actually a winch, if I'm not mistaken. A hand winch. Thanks for the content. Keep up the good work. BS'D
Thanks, Ya a hand winch of sorts no doubt. The company (Tractel) that makes those actually calls it a lifting and pulling hoist. Available from 3/4 ton to multiple ton. They've been used for many years for tree work in my part of the world. The endless line aspect is real helpful, and it also allows to back off slowly in small increments while holding the tension.
Why would you do that?
The idiot that did that went to jail.
Awesome.!!! Cheap & effective
hi wath sort of cord you use and how long its?
Simple and elegant. Very nice!
Thanks Dennis, I went back to hunt down your videos now that I had a similar project at hand. I found them very helpful!
This time I'll use woodprix instructions to make it myself :)
You are sure welcome, Gary. 'm glad that you found it useful.
This is intriguing...thank you for sharing this. I am an American tree climber and I am learning to use this method. Thank you for preserving this ancient method.
Do you have any videos on completing the chair?
Ha, I was suspecting! Thanks for the post. Say hi to Bub.
Paul B here J. ;-)
Thanks jimmy, I do recommend them. Very light and comfortable with excellent grip. Available with and without spikes and a toe protection insert. Available outside the country. I don't think I can post a link, but google 'Nippon shoes'.
Love the tabi boots J.
Don't trust guying to the nearby trees with so much at risk. Looks like a significant bend in the trunk, def. going to bounce & roll, easily breaking whatever. Best option for falling looks to be throwing it forward, well past the stone ent. Cut a narrow Humboldt, no more than 25-30 degrees, so it commits to the lay, cut it as high as you can and not too deep (maybe 20% diameter) 2-3" stump shot. That'll get it out past the stone, if you trust your falling skills on a tree that big. Scary & fun
